  1. There was another well-known book-supposedly completely updated for the new millenium which stated France still required "yellow" headlights;there were sufficient other errors to make you doubt any and all of the info in the book.
  2. The requirement to display a GB plate dates back to 1928 and this requirement has never been rescinded.
  3. Unfortuneately staff move on-particularly the good ones who speak several languages.
  4. Both EDF and your water co. will have local offices that you can visit in person;I visited mine in the past when I first wanted to set up supplies and they were outstandingly helpful(my fractured French & their fractured English sufficed).
  5. Just reurned from France and there are definitely changes at the "peages": most of them now have only one(or sometimes two) "t" lanes but the biggest change is that most peages only have one lane(sometimes two) for paying cash. But the great advantage is that most have numerous lanes where you can pay with automatic "card" or with "t".
  6. My wife dropped a set of keys down a drain-she couldn't understand the amount of effort(successful)I put in to retrieving them, till I told her the cost of replacement.
  7. Does it have to have a spring?Rising butts,for example-do they comply?
  8. Looks like the only way will be by taxi.Certainly doesn't appear to be any direct route(or reasonably indirect)by bus or train, but someone else may know.
  9. St.Amour, that's why hotels supply butter amd jam in individual foil pots!!
  10. Perpignan is officially S-East;04 phone numbers and part of Languedoc-Rousillon.
  11. Why not ask them? I've always found them(particularly the Gendarmerie rather than the local police)very helpful and pleasant.
  12. It would be even quicker if they used the Italian system which has the pick-up at the beginning of the lane and the barrier at the end-they don't even slow-up.Also the Italians issue their doofers to all types of vehicle-not just cars.
  13. I'll probably get a lot of abuse, mostly from people who don't like motorcycles plus a few homophobics, but the first weekend in September is the annual European convention of HOG and Goldwing owners-even if you're not into bikes,it's worth seeing.Cap d'Agde.
  14. Have never eaten in a McD and don't intend to;the food in Carcasonne may be good but the service in the places we tried was atrocious which is why I suggested Salvaza.
  15. The DART lane has priority during rush hours but is open to all cars for the rest of the day.
  16. Not to be confused with "disabled" spaces which are also blue.
  17. Yes;there is no leasehold;most owners appoint a committee who employ a "syndic" to look after their interests, usually for a year at a time for a fee, and, yes, he can be replaced.
  18. The answer seems to be "avoid Citibank".I regularly tranfer money using "Tipanet" from my Co-op account to my CL account and have never had any concerns. When I bought,I ordered a bank draft in French currency from my Co-op bank in favour of my notaire. It seems that most people in their efforts to save the last few pennies end up paying pounds!!
  19. Why refer to them as "guests" when they are paying;they are "CUSTOMERS".
  20. I should also have said that a cycle helmet offers protection if worn correctly;most tourists, particularly the women(mustn't disturb the hair-do)wear them on the back of the head so they will not protect the face if you go off frontwards and are likely to break your neck if backwards and I cycle in France and the UK.What is good about France is the courtesy shown by all drivers even the local truckies.
  21. Most Tour of France cyclists do not want to wear helmets but were made to do so under penalty of heavy fines.
  22. I always use the small change to buy the baguettes;the baker seems grateful to have a supply of small change.
  23. When we considered selling our apartment(which is mainly concrete)we were told a termite survey was needed, just to confirm that it is mainly concrete.
  24. I was in a restaurant having Sunday lunch when a diner at the next table collapsed into her main course;the waiter adminstered first aid until the sapeur-pompiers arrived and took her away. The owner declined payment as they left to follow her.We finished our meal and a little later were walking past the same restaurant and noticed all the people-including the collapser-finishing their meals.
