Fancy A Friday Night Down The Pub?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Time to be blunt but honest - no offence intended to anyone.

France is great if you are retired but for those under the age of 50 and want a bit more out of their social life other than apertifs with their neighbours or other retired ex-pats then there isn't a lot to offer.

I live near Parthenay (department 79) and although I've met some nice people, very few are of my generation (25-45 yr olds). In a nutshell, I'm wondering if there is anyone else out there who feels this way and fancies meeting down the pub on a frequent/infrequent basis. [B]

If you've taken offence to what I've said, then this proves my point about socialising with 50+ group. [:D]

Anyway, if you're interested, let me know.

No offence taken  Dan but I would worry that you think that  in your generation

of 25 - 45 year olds, some lush gals of 25 would want to be in the

company of a 45 year year old moosh ! I reckon a 49 year old would

drink more easily with a 51 years old though !! What will you do when

you hit 45 ?  seek out your generation of 45 to 65's.[:)]

I think the problem lies with you and where you have dumped yourself,

nothing wrong (I guess !) with Parthenay but for a Brit (guessing here)

to land in an out of the way town like that, was bad planning eh (no

offence meant to you or any Parthenians). I quite enoyed my brief stay

there a while back but live there, well perhaps, perhaps not, it would

depend on what the moving was for, retirement, well ? for living a

25-45 life well perhaps not........

Why not move North or South, some other areas can often generally be

for, how can I put it................Mmmm I can't, just seek out the

Med and the north coast, I do think there is more of your Brit

generation requirements there. If you do actually need to stay where

you are, then good luck in your search.......

Dan,  You are shutting yourself off to having some great friendships if you think you can only find them in your 'generation'.  I count myself lucky to have friends in their twenties, thirties, forties, fifties, sixties and seventies.   All of them interesting and fun to be with !

As for the over 50's not wanting to go down the pub - tell that to my 83 yr old dad, he still likes his pint and a chat at his local and he doesn't care who with or how old they are !!

Happy hunting [B]

My hubby joined the local losirs footie team, play every friday night at 9 and never gets in before 2!!!!  and he is 53, the oldest player there but loves his friday night out and its improving his french, although some choice words inthere!!

Where we live there is loads of bars with music around the area which we go to with friends rangine from 30yrs to 60yrs old,  but with teenage children we choose not to live in the country but rather by the sea with a large town close by.

Lollie   44    not quite my age!!

Hi Dan,

Friday night is curry and fish and chips night at Le Sporting Hotel in Cerizay. The food is excellent and there are lots of British people going on a regular basis so it's easy enough to get chatting. The bar's also big enough for 'the lads' to get together out of earshot of the girls if they want a bit of peace and quiet. There's live music from a British guy on Friday 14th and the last I heard it was looking like a busy evening with most of the hotel rooms booked by people staying over rather than driving home.

As a Deux-Sèvrian in exile, Parthenay in my days (30+ years ago!) was only worth going to with my grandfather and my uncles when they wanted to sell their cattle as it boasted to have the biggest one day cattle market in Europe ... don't know if they still boast about it ... As kids it was quite exciting to travel all the way up north of the département coming from Melle. So exciting because my aunts and my gran refused to accompany us as they thought the town had nothing to offer them in way of shopping that they could not get in Niort which was near and for them more sophisticated ...

but as Mikki said I would not have settled there from the UK ... No offence meant.

We went to Le Sporting Hotel / Bar in Cerizay on Friday 14th and had a fantastic evening. The place was full with French people making up about 20% of the total and the looks on some of their faces suggested they were eating 'British' fish and chips and curry for the first time and enjoying it. The 'live' singer was a guy called Allan and he was excellent. Lots of people were up dancing and even the bar staff were bopping away behind the bar at times. When I spoke to Paul and Debbie from the curry van last Friday they said the bar owners were hoping to do it all again sometime in May. Paul said he'd be posting the information on his website so if you're interested in a good night out go to www.codandcurry.co.uk

Just been on the cod and curry website and how much things are changing in these back waters of Deux-Sèvres!... never knew so much went on, even in my younger days! (30+years ago!) ... Will have to entice my old foggies for a night out when I next come over from my welsh valley!... Maybe my OH will follow and won't feel so left out of the circle if he can be garanteed a pint and a curry! Being with his outlaws is not a favorite passtime[8-)]...

I dont take offence and we have been here 4 years and we agree with you. Not many of us "youngsters" (mid 30s) about. Most around us are retired and whilst nice people, like you say it is difficult to socialise and have common ground.

Saying that there are a few younger families around here and they are as miserable as sin, totally unsociable and highly suspicious of any attempts by us to be friendly! Everyone thinks that everyone else is only out to make money out of you...(infact some "friends"have actually tried to rip us off).what ever happened to being plain friendly!

I thought you said you was going to see the band play tonight Twinks. Do you think enticing miki and the man with the chainsaw is more fun?

BTW have you shown your husband the chainsaw massacres website yet?  He would pull you off this forum NOW if he saw it young lady.

Now I think I will name my price[I]

Im 54 and mentally younger than a lot of under 30s I know. But I know what you mean about a lot of older Brits. They find it hard to open up and wouldnt dream of going to the pub.

Anyone, any age, who fancies a few pints and a laugh please get in touch (and yes sport does matter, but what would I know as a Leeds fan). I live between Aulnay and Matha (17).

Cheers
