Russethouse
He is deputy Prime Minister, but it is unlikely that he will be the next PMHe can use official residences, but has no ministry to preside over ?So what does he actually do?
Kitty
He prevents there having to be a deputy leadership election, which would be required under the Labour constitution.
vervialle
What is John Prescott for, well I think its to prove they are no different from the conservative party, they can do sleeze on woman and extra marital affairs just like the cons, it used to be just money that was their misdemeanor. Not anymore !!!!! Tresco
Oh come on! He's a very energetic politician. No one could have held the job as long as him if he wasn't doing a lot right. He had a massive Portfolio, and it's been considerably reduced, presumably as a visible punishment. People who have met him tell me he is a great guy; very intelligent, and articulate too. vervialle
I am not going to get into a political argument and this is the last thing I will say on the subject, but I think he has got something on T.B. otherwise he would have been sacked, it makes a mockery of Blunketts demise, just wait for the books when they have all packed up. Patf
I thought he was appointed deputy PM as a pacifier for the left wing ofthe party, the real socialists. I lived in Hull for 20+ years, husband40+ years, and Prescott was well liked by his constituents. They are atough lot in East Hull. Keep meaning to ring our daughter who is stillthere to find out what the crack is about him now. Pat.
Deimos
I liked the news report that said something along the lines of: “dramatic reduction in power and responsibility yet without and reduction in pay, perks and privileges”. Are people in the UK getting better or worse value for they money now ? Ian

Beryl
I am aware that an official complaint has been made to the police and quite right too in my opinion for misconduct in a public office. There cannot be much worse in the way of misconduct than the Deputy PM bonking his secretary in his office during working hours! Red Ken quite rightly faced a tribunal for his comments to a Jewish reporter and a police officer recently made similar headlines for having sex in his patrol car. Surely, this man/ idiot/ right honourable gentleman/ adulterer/ Deputy PM - delete as applicable should face the music for his actions?
powerdesal
A policeman's patrol car is the equivalent of his office whilst he ison the job (ooops) and his consensuel partner was not a fellow employeeyet he was severely disciplined (cant remember the punishment) Isomehow can't see the DPM being treated in the same way, heis one ofTony's mates!!!!!! ali-cat
The policeman in question, found doing the "dirty deed" in his car was suspended & given over 200 hours community service. It was also said on the news here yesterday that Tony's scared Prescott would cause trouble, with other left-wingers, if sacked. Wish one of my ex-employers had felt like that!! Full wage & no job to do!! Happy Days!! [:D]

Deimos
A recent Populus poll found 86% of people thought it wrong that he keeps his massive salary, pension, perks, etc. whilst losing much of his responsibility and workload. Only 10% of people thought he should be allowed to keep all his pay and perks unchanged. Ian
Beryl
I personally think Prescott should have faced misconduct charges , as I don't think the evidence was too hard to find as he never denied the main accusation, however a Deputy Com at the Met Police has decided otherwise. Dick Smith
The press in this country ensures that no politician ever gets a fair hearing, no matter what party. They have, over years, developed a mindset in the public that all poliiticians are corrupt and dishonest or else incompetent. Large sections of the population seem to find thinking for themselves too hard or time-consuming to bother with, so they simply parrot what the press says.In what way does John Prescott's size or looks impact upon his work? In no way. Yet several of you here seem to think those things are paramount. Simple insults do not count as considered political thought, I am afraid. Ron Avery
Spot on Dick, I actually worked under Prescott's direction on the London Jubilee line Extension and it was to his credit that it was finished in time for the Millenium. He is a no-nosense arse kicker, he is a very able manager and doer and he gets things done. He not only bangs heads together he also suggests alternatives and strategies He had had a full time job before they gave him a Department and he will now revert to making things happen in Government and the country by banging heads and kicking arses which is what he excels at. The right wing press in the UK have a habit of going for the most able politicians because a successful government is the biggest threat to the Tories returning to power. As far as I know Beryl its not a criminal offence to shag your secretary, good job too as many so called captains of industry would be doing time if that were the case, mind you Prescott never got her up the duff and then walked away like another politician that comes to mind.[Www]
