Another article here, with some of the other measures:

http://www.midilibre.fr/2011/05/13/routes-le-tout-repressif-suffira-t-il-a-faire-baisser-le-nombre-de-morts,318421.php

Apparently, GPS warning devices - whether position-based or detection-based - are already illegal in Germany.

I thought the fixed ones were marked on Michelin road maps and on the departement map in the Calendrier du Facteur.  However, a quick look at a 2011 map and calendar proves this to be no longer the case.
I think that the apparatus to detect mobile speed traps has been illegal for a long time.

Press release issued by the Comité Interministériel de la Sécurité Routiere

No more merrily speeding along listening for the beep telling you to back off for a few metres then back on the champignon....[;-)]

Should push come to shove, it should be possible for owners of most SatNav devices to remove the speed camera notification software element without too much of a problem.

OK, it will be a bit of a bind not having the warning of impending fixed cameras or radar hot spots but, if the device is user programmed correctly for the national speed limits, the user will still be alerted in the case of a speed excess.

Driving up dinmore hill yesterday to shop in hereford I slowed down at the sight of a box camera sign at the side of the road. I was told not to worry as there was no speed trap at all. The same thing on wednesday between worcester and tenbury wells. Do the tom toms take account of these pseudo radar trap installations.

Can't comment on the accuracy of TomTom devices, but regular speed camera location device updates should accommodate cameras no longer in operation, although I know not of any device which would indicate a pseudo camera.

Problem within the UK is the number of cameras which due to cut backs, are no longer operational yet are still in place.

Then of course there are those sneaky signs which regular road users ignore knowing there is no camera - until the day the police mount one of their mobile units in the area![;-)]

Would it be worth reminding readers that village/town name signs in France act as 50km/hour speed limit notifications, provided that they have a red border? There's no need for any numbered speed limit sign. I've lived here for 15 years, but got caught by mobile radar a few hundred yards after passing an "end of 70 limit" sign. I had failed to notice the village name sign shortly after it. I was only trundling along at 60-ish, which didn't feel at all fast - consequence 90 euros on-the-spot fine and one point.

Seems quite funny that they want to ban Sat Navs because they warn you of  speed cameras, when every Thursday our local French newspaper gives out the locations of the Gendarmes and their mobile speed guns for the following week in our area. Can't imagine who supplies the newspaper with it's information? [8-)]

Can they really ban Sat Nav's just because of the speed camera warnings ?.Surely it would be illegal?

European court  comes to mind.I use mine quite a lot when I am travelling to places new.I know there are maps but Sat Navs are so much quicker.
Sat Nav's per se are not under threat of a ban only camera databases. As these are an option installed at the users choice and discretion the answer is entirely in their own hands.

OK then, I was given a Sat Nav as a gift, I have noticed that it tells me when I am approaching a speed camera, as it now seems that that piece of information is no longer allowable in France how do I remove it.

No rule for all so it will vary from make to make. RTFM or Google it.

Also if you go online to get updates check that Camera POI's (points of interest) are not selected. Mind you the main point of updating is for POI's, the actual maps don't change enough to warrant it, especially if not free !

Not too hard to do Nick, depending on your make and model.

An alternative solution is to either mask the camera - that way it is not displayed on the screen but you still get the audible warning or, rename (with an image added) the Speed Camera POI's to something else such as ATM's, Convents, Bars, etc, whatever takes your fancy[Www].
Crikey, so you lot are just going to roll over and accept this stupid piece of proposed legislation. How very sad. National Protest Day June 18th - all types of vehicles. Get out there . .
Not a matter of 'us lot' accepting it no matter how stupid the legislation may be, being France it's more a case of preparing for the inevitable![;-)]

Thanks for the info Sam and Ano, I have just spoken to Tom Tom and  this is their take on it

Hi Lewis, We spend a lot of time in France and we have a tom tom sat nav. The French authorities are bringing in a new law that will ban devices that warn of radar, they already ban radar detectors. Can I set my device so that it does not show radar spots in France? NickP

Lewis G. (UK): At this time we have no further information on this law other than it is at this time just a proposal and hasn't yet gone to the vote. For now it is still very much legal and we are unable to advise anything until it possible goes through for certain. My apologies.

NickP: Thanks my friend I will wait until the proposal is ratified ,or not, and ask again then cheers. NickP

That's simply not based on any reality in that there is far more likelihood of bringing about a governmental 'change of heart' if enough people actually get out there and make their feeling known.

Fuel strikes

Fishing quotas

Meat imports

Farm subsidies

etc, etc.
