1. "I've just downloaded this and started to use it today. Very impressed - and, at last, I have access to my forum control panel from my office desk PC" Patrick As a matter of interest, do you also see the formatting controls when you send a reply etc. Struggling to get full functionallity when I try many different browsers.  My own attempt with Firefox and this forum shows that most things work but not the formatting.
2. "This has nothing to do with the server, it is a problem at your end as you have no doubt worked out by compairing both PC's. I would sugest you get a PC guy to sort it out for you. Unfortunatly there is nothing LF can do for you as we don't supply a user PC support service." Quillan, Whilst in my case I almost agree and feel I'm lucky to be able to have both situations and be able to see the difference.  If not I might have just thought there was a problem that I can't be bothered to sort. I'm not suggesting the server itself is at fault, but there is undoubtedly a problem with the web site coding, my reasoning is that many people are experiencing differing problems on different platforms or due to having inconsistent versions or service packs of their software.  A fact that most web designers and software vendors are making efforts to get around.  When is a problem yours or ours will always be a tricky one, but I believe anything published on the Web which doesn't work for some should be resolved because generally the idea is to reach all people. I hope Tim will also see things this way and try to resolve the problem because I very much enjoy using this Forum, hoping that any problems don't put others off. Anyway, I thank you for your help and will continue to research and resolve my problem. Best wishes
3. I just thought I'd let you know, but you seem to have a problem with your DNS server as the domain livingfrance.com does not resolve to anywhere and pinging the domain results in a 100% packet loss. Might be an idea to sort this problem out so those of us who are too lazy to type http://www. into our browsers can get to the webpage.   Tim Seems ok to me at the moment, this is the result I get when using ZoneEdit:- livingfrance.comNSns0.archant.netlivingfrance.comNSns1.archant.netlivingfrance.comNSns0.archant.netlivingfrance.comNSns1.archant.netns0.archant.netA193.128.139.15ns1.archant.netA193.128.139.16
4. Tim Have also posted this reply in another section:- (I am referring to a situation where I have 2 machines one which I could access the site without problem and one at home where I was not running Norton and even tried without any firewwall) Have now matched everything in IE on both machines.  One works one doesn't however on the one that doesn't, I have also tried Netscape 7 and Firefox.  Both work and I can get to Control Panel with no problem, but when I reply to a message, I get no formatting or spellcheck. So looks like I have to make a choice for the time being as to which is most important! Not sure, but it may help you when you look at any site problems.

6. "Make sure you are using everything Microsoft. If you have a MAC (even in the same house or village) it can cause problems with this ......." Rest assured for all the Mac fans, we have a few here at work where I have full functionality (of the machine, not brain that is).  Perhaps I need to "borrow" one for home. Its a shame the're not connected to the Internet, would love to try one of them. Have noticed now that IE here is set to Custom security.  Have made a list and something else to try tonight.  Other than that all versions and patches are the same, but could of course be due to some other program installed.  So if that doesn't work will then have to start making another list over Xmas.
7. "My next try will be to have a go at the Java version when I get home.  Will be happy to let you know if I get anywhere." Ron and I1 Sorry to say it failed and I had already tried clearing the cache, but gave it another go anyway. Still feel its a Java problem and have posted a message with the error in the magazine part of the Forum
8. Tim Have to report a different error:- I'm not running Norton and even when I disable my Firewall and uninstall Panda antivirus, after reboot it still occurs. I have also installed the latest Java runtime. I find that I am unable to access the Control Panel (or Recent Topics).  When I hover the mouse over either I get the normal IE logo and Javascript void(");  As soon as I click it it goes to a Javascript error (Yellow logo !) the details of which say: Line:148 Char:4 Error:'filters.revealTrans' is null or not an object code:0 URL:http://forums.livingfrance.com/message .aspx?forumID=18 All other functions ok including font styles etc etc - I can get to my own profile but no one elses with a similar error message. I have another machine at work which can access it, so am able to tell what it should do. Both running XP with Service pack2.  Will continue to explore the Java angle when I get time.
9. "Tried all that, changed my firewall, tried disabling the firewall, tried unblocking ad blocking, and tried adding *.livingfrance* etc to Firewall, but it would not accept this as a valid site.  I also tried adding whole URL http://forums.livingfrance.com/ to Firewall but still no control panel or author.  Is it just me???" Ron Having a few problems myself, luckily my PC at work although the same can get to the Control panel and everything else, but my one at home can't (don't have any problem with the author names, but can't access them to view profiles) Have tried all recommendations myself - even disabling the firewall and anti virus - still doesn't work, but at least I have something to experiment with.  My next try will be to have a go at the Java version when I get home.  Will be happy to let you know if I get anywhere.
10. Just a thought, some email packages require settings to be input to handle hyperlinks.
11. Firstly to Dick Many thanks on info re FileMaker, it has been a long time and do remember good words said about it.  There are though some good program features within Access as well and many organisations including us use it as a development tool.   As to why we don’t allow Macs on our network, we have found many security issues giving us a lack of control.  I have no problem with them as such and in the right hands I’ve no doubt extremely useful.  As a college with students as young as 14, we have a legal requirement to control use of Internet and our monitoring and filtering tools can be bypassed by the Macs.  We do have small networks for some specific training rooms just to share file and printers and we do allow our Marketing Dept to use them for access to the Internet, but have to trust them.  We have found that if connected to the main network it gets flooded with SAP packets and slows the whole thing down.   As to some of the other comments we in IT see ourselves very much as a service department and are well aware of the needs of users, but have to view the situation as a whole and to the benefit of all, offering "guidance" where necessary.
12. <I requested that our office (UK civil service) have access to some software (FileMaker database). This is fairly serious software - the BBC uses it for programme details etc. The 'Technical Support Department' had never heard of it, would have to evaluate it (?) and would only do that in 6 months. I could have Microsoft Access (much inferior) though, because they didn't have to think about that. I'm not even allowed to connect my Apple laptop to my Dell desktop in case I 'compromise the system'. After Christmas I'm going to ask them to install a Bluetooth module - should be good for a few cardiac arrests.> Dick Somewhat amused by this, probably because it's something like what I might have said to someone here (Network Manager for a Technical College).  Not wishing to start an argument as to which is best, but you should be aware that FileMaker is as you say a serious piece of software, but only in certain situations ie it is (or was when I last tried it) a flat file database rather than a relational one like Access.  I think it started out as an Apple application, but they then released a Windows version.  My technicians here would probably not know it either, would not want to support it because of a lack of interest in it. The knowledge that Access is an excellent product and already installed everywhere here, I could imagine using a similar evaluation excuse.  We also do not allow anyone to link their Mac to our network in anyway and so suggest you are probably correct in your assumption about a Bluetooth connection. The Mac/Windows argument will it seems go on forever or at least until the demise of one or other. Good luck
13. "As an aside, Dick, why won't the avatar accept a .jpg? What format do I need?" Ray think it has to be a .gif
14. Has anyone found a Web site or software with pronunciation help for place names? Something where you point to the name and hear an audio file would be ideal or perhaps just the phonetic (?) spelling.
15. "Make it catfood then get yourself an optical mouse - the Microsoft Intellimouse is excellent, I'm on my 4th ( a wireless one). Never hesitates or sticks and works on any surface." hi Dick Seeing as nobody else mentioned it, are you just heavy handed or don't the MS ones last long ?
16. "If anyone finds a £49.00 return fare, please let the rest of us know." David I have a booking for this Friday for £49 on Seacat via their Ferrysale web site, booked last week when Speedferries couldn't accomodate it.  Oddly enough when the confirmation email didn't arrive, their website contact form (email) to Ferrysales was bounced back as undeliverable, so I contacted Hoverspeed by email who confirmed it without any problems.
17. "But, would they be compatible with French valves and connectors?" I hope someone will correct me if wrong, but aren't the radiator tappings without valves screwed 1/2" or 3/4" and therefore compatible with French screwed fittings.  This would mean if the valves were bought in France they would have the correct size copper outlet too.
18. Gay I agree with you about the contract price (O2 as well), but the reason I changed to contract from PAYG was because of a weekend trip.  When desparately awaing a call went through £20 voucher within minutes just collecting voicemail, some just saying welcome to Prague. Like you, mine doesn't get a lot of use, but can't justify PAYG abroad either.
19. It is also possible in some cases - subject to the make of dish, to obtain a dual outlet (or even 3 or 4) LNB rather than buy and install an additional dish.  Worth checking with the Satcure people.
20. "Edit - No it doesn't work. Any other ideas anyone?" Until it gets fixed, just highlight the text you want - Copy, then create a standard reply Add Reply (not using Quote) then Paste the text here - in this one I've added the quotes around your text just to show it as a quote. Hope that helps
21.
Suddenly I have lost the French flag on the favorites entry for this site. It is back to the normal explorer logo. I was fond of this as I could see the link very easily amongst all the other dross t...
You can change the icon just like others on the desktop - just right click on the entry, then Properties, Web document and Change icon.  If there's one in the folder it should be there if not you can choose one of your own using browse.  Not sure why the original disappeared though.
22. "I'm sure on the 'old' forum there was a recommendation of a site where you could download in PDF format instructions for using cameras etc if you had lost the instructions, does anyone know of it ? Alternativley does any one know how to change the resolution on a Fuji Finepix camera, so that I can get more pics on the smart card ??" This is one to try http://www.instruction-manuals.co.uk/ Not familiar with Fuji, but perhaps their own site could help with a manual.  Should look for settings like medium/ fine etc.
23.  "I've been looking for days for how to contact Admin with problems. Guess this is the place. For about 5 days now I haven't been seeing the names of the posters on the screen. This makes it a bit odd to read through threads. Can someone technical pls look into this? Also, how do I get to have an avatar? My profile just says - no avatar. Doesn't give me the option to install one" Just a thought, does this mean that you did see the posters names before, if so have you changed the screen resolution since, perhaps to see bigger type etc.  It may be that changing the resolution to 800 x 600 and view in full screen mode (not a window) could help you to see more details.  As to the Avatar, you need to go to the Control Panel which if you can't see the link could also be related to screen res. Another possibility is colour schemes.  Are you using a default background scheme or have you customised it in anyway.  Kind of think if you are able to post and read messages etc there can't be anything seriously wrong. If you're still having problems, give us a few more details like Win version, browser used and version etc - I'm sure others will have some thoughts
24. "Can anyone help? I got to the site, put in our commune name up comes the page but picture does not appear, I have tried different years but still nothing." Have just tried it from work with a 2mb leased line and takes a while to load a Java applett, but then it brings up a map, you choose the section you want, then you get a list to choose how you want the picture, paper or CD then it goes to another page for payment.  The CD version was around 76 euro.  Largest printed picture 200+
25. "The add reply 'button' at the top of the topic allows you to reply without quote" hi Isabel I didn't notice it before, but it's at the bottom as well
