Amelie who?

Recommended Posts

Having looked at a couple of French message boards I get the impression that people are not too interested because she lives in Switzerland and is a lesbian. My French isn't up to working out which of these is the bigger problem! Seriously, I expect that the tennis has been somewhat overshadowed by the football. If you think of the British press, if Engerland had been in the final, I doubt if the start of World War 3 would have been reported much.

Still Switzerland as far as I know;

I don't understand Grumpy never having seen her. Any major tournament she plays in is reported on here. Her Wimbledon win was on the news that night.

However, wierdly, I happened to be watching the Tour de France, and suddenly remembered she was playing in the final at Wimbledon. Checked the other channels, no sign of this historic battle, and then found out where she was up to on the internet (winning, last game, final set).

Suddenly there was a huge cheer from the Tde F crowd - yes, that's the way I, and the Tde F commentators, found out she had won.

Strange.

Seems to be plenty of coverage to me......

I think it was just a bit eclipsed by Zizou and chums. TF1 still had live coverage of Thuram's arrival in Martinique as the main item of news (five minutes worth!) , ahead of the bombs in India, at 20:00 on Tuesday night.

I would imagine that living in Switzerland would be the far graver "offence" of the two.

I seem to remember that the World Cup DID NOT take place in France so why was the nation SO interested in that !?.........

Hope you've still got that Flamesuit handy, Alcazar!!

It is a pity if she didn't get as much coverage, in France, as here.  The BBC were very eager to point out how long it had been since a French woman (no matter how butch!! [Www] ) had won!!

That's a matter of opinion... [6] (justoff to find my flameproof suit)

Our neighbour says he has never heard of the lesbien suisse, and didn't know she had won Wimbledon. I'm surprised he has heard of Wimbledon, as it's not in Normandy. Although he followed les bleus in the coupe mondiale avidly, he doesn't know who David Beckham is (was?) either.

A couple of points...Beckham is a man who has an IQ somewhat below the

norm. He is married to someone with even less of an IQ. Both are

extremely rich...Now in reality they are two people to be quite

envious of. So laughing or knocking them is like water off a ducks back I

guess. It must be a joy to sit down and be told you are even richer that

day than the day before, without doing too much to become so !! Good

luck to them......... lucky so and so's !!

As for Mlle Mauresmo, great for her. She has worked really hard for her

success and what her sexuality has to do with it I have no idea. Any

French who bring it up, simply confirm my belief that there are a huge

amounts of racists here. Funny how the French soccer team seem to les les noirs

after this World Cup and some of the press, now seem to be embarrassed that

they were reporting the team as such for sometime but now, my local

paper is denouncing the way the national journals and French people in

general were racist in their remarks over the years..

Homosexuality is a form of ethnicity? Where is the Democratic Republic

So it would seem that it was on French TV, if only for a short time! We were absolutely delighted that she did win. As a bit of a non sequitur does anyone remember seeing that amazing huge trompe l'oeil picture of her a few years ago on the side of an apartment building near Roland Garros in Paris?

It was as I am sure you were aware a generalisation. Racism and

homophobia in France are all too often,  banded together by many

French in their distaste of gays and les noirs.
David Beckham - isn't he a former home secretary who is visually impaired?
No, David Beckham is the one who had an affair with... oh but wait, was that David Blunkett...? or am I confusing the two... [8-)][blink][:D]

Amelie deserved to win, both from the point of view of her game being better than Justine H-H's but also because of the default win at the Australian Open. The best tennis from either gender was in the semis, I thought. Both finals were a bit patchy. IMO.[:P]

If I wasn't a feminist I would take this as the opportunity to make a joke about the men and their dogs. As it is, I'll stay schtum!

Sorry - I was being flippant. You are, of course, quite correct that the two evils are often combined.

I have occaisonally used my head in the course of unarmed combat, but

my bones are growing brittle so I try to lay off the hand-to-hand stuff

these days.[:)]
