  1. Horrified but not surprised. Who else is there to lead the Republicans? I also wish there was a strong Democrat who could swing the vote. The current VP has wasted the last years after showing much promise at the start.
  2. We will not be affected but hope it settles down by April. I am grateful for your warning and think it is always better to publicise these conditions.
  3. That is not a very long, record breaker. It is just a line of individual galettes which are clearly gapped slightly. It would be twice as long if each one was cut in half and the pieces placed end to end. Sorry but I have nothing to do at the moment except drink a mug of tea followed by icing our daughter’s 55th birthday cake, made by her Mum.
  4. ALBF is quite right. The only way that TdH would be so high is that your holiday home was very large, expensive and in a desirable area. Let us know what sort of house it was that you sold.
  5. I was drawn into the content of your link partly because I was intrigued by the title. It was a good start to the day. The section on Waterloo reminded me two things: one was that I had enjoyed reading the book on Waterloo many years ago, the other was that the battle of Austerlitz, in the recent Napoleon, had been filmed a few miles from my home in UK. I had been hoping to watch “Napoleon” in our local cinema in France and I will also buy and re-read Waterloo.
  6. Very good advice ssomon but more importantly it looks like Katrina has asked us a question and then abandoned the forum.
  7. I prefer “Younger than springtime am I” which I was once and “some enchanted evening “(with a French accent) Post-Christmas I had been quite happy until our daughter phoned because her VW Golf was running badly. It needs a new injector which is not cheap and it is too cold and wet for me to play games with it.
  8. In yesterday’s Times there was an article covering alcohol free or low alcohol wines, spirits and beers. They thought my Guinness is very good so I’m not sure if I should pay any attention to their findings. The best no or low-alcohol beers, according to our expert https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/367162ae-01b1-4980-98a2-91997311eaec?shareToken=6e3d25485194b615caaead9100e9c626
  9. What is the range of your star rating? Four out of five is pretty good. I would give three out of five.
  10. Just a quick reply for now though I do have much more waiting in my head for later. We had a meal out after Christmas with friends at a cheaper end restaurant where I normally have a pint of Guinness while the others order wine. As a driver, I decided to try zero alcohol Guinness for the first time. It had a similar taste to the real thing but lacked the usual body. I will avoid it in the future. So that’s another choice gone.
  11. Well it was very good to read your post today Henry. We spend the winter in UK and have a large garden adjacent to woodland. I make sure we have several bird boxes ready for spring and my wife feeds the birds all through the w8nter months.
  12. Now I need an example of “hanging” question marks and also typical “things”. None of these are my chosen word which will come later after I have remembered one.
  13. Thank you Gardian and a very happy Christmas to you and all those on the forum.
  14. I think our Christmas dinner is also 80% vegetarian comprising roast potatoes, sprouts, carrots, roast parsnips, stuffing, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, plenty of gravy, sloe (from garden in France) gin aperitif, top quality (at least 6€ from Super U) wine, Christmas pudding flaming with best cognac(from Cognac via Super U), maybe finished off with a small glass of something very strong together with freshly ground and percolated coffee. Oh, I forgot the other 20%…….a carefully carved (my contribution), generous helping of fresh, free range turkey. Only a week to go! NB Our vegetarian daughter will join us substituting my wife’s special recipe veggie roast for the turkey.
  15. We are very pleased to read this thread. The grues are an annual treat at the end of October and start of November. This year we saw just THREE grues and were worried about their lack of progress.
  16. Thanks Menthe for the link. I am sitting watching the rain falling and, having completed many of my indoor tasks, I have started to plan next years trips around France. Arles was already on the list of possibilities and has now risen up the pecking order. We are happy with the modern architecture alongside the classical Roman sites but stay aware of the social problems of the local population. My wife is an expert in architecture, archaeology and art in general so she will probably vote for Arles in the spring when the schools are in session.
  17. Those ideas to test the summer conditions are really good. By the way that lovely view, is it at the sea or is it an inland lake? edit: of course you have already said where it is. Sorry!
  18. I was sent to Sainsbury’s this year to buy soda water and found litre bottles at 80p. Other supermarkets are much the same. My Dad always had a drinks trolley at Christmas and it included a soda water dispenser. He told me the water inside was just carbonated water but as it emerged from the spout it was infused with bicarbonate of soda to give a subtle flavour and an ability to hold its bubbles when mixed with alcoholic drinks.
  19. …..yes it means you paid for the year and the new owners will not pay anything. I am assuming that the system has not changed regarding the payment of Tax d’Hab. I think that the Taxe Fonciere is paid pro rata and the new owner is liable to their portion for the year. I am not an expert or have much experience in these matters but I am sure other members will be able to give a definitive statement. I trust DaveLister!
  20. The op last visited this site two years ago so it is unlikely they will answer your question. Maybe you should start a new thread with a clear title to attract attention.
  21. Thanks Debra for clearing that up. It is a pity that rogue posters are able to convey inaccurate advice and then disappear.
  22. Agree about SW/SE but I think we were being guided by the poster’s statement that they were thinking of making a base at Perpignan.
  23. I must have been carried away by a rip tide and missed the detail of what I was reading. Will check it again.
  24. I hope you are going to report your success after the event. Good luck! Which day are you swimming, July 22nd or August 5th?
