Yep, given the seeming love of longterm contracts here in France I wonder if the local authorites at Poitiers thought that they'd got some sort of deal for life? There seems to be a Ryanair service to just about every small airport in France - Mr O'Leary is now in a perfect position to play one off against another.

Well, Mr O'Whatsit has done the dirty on us [:@] 

Up until yesterday the website showed Limoges as a destination from Edinburgh so we hoped it was just a case of waiting for the schedules to be posted.  Today it doesn't figure at all [:@].

You go to their news page and read of all these new exciting routes that are being opened up, but never a mention of pulling the plug on one.  [:'(]

It's easy to understand why you have to phone at extortionate rates or write as you can't email them.  They'd have to employ more folk to reply to the emails of complaint than they have cabin crew.

If you have a Ryanair service that's good for you, don't expect it to be there next week and don't expect to see it shown anywhere if its being withdrawn.

That's rotten luck. As you say, we can't depend on services permantly remaining where we currently use them.

We use Nimes to Luton several times each year. It suits us perfectly, with the shuttle bus to Nimes, a bus to our town, then a 2 minute walk to our apartment.

As the services who run the airport (navy?) are due to move out soon, we can't be sure Ryanair will be there in the future. Even the fire engine belongs to them. I can't see the local bureaucrats stumping up to run it; I'm not convinced they actually realise how much they benefit from the tourists/second home owners/workers who fill every flight. Our town and others in the area could work together on a plan to run the airport, but I can't see it happening.

So we'd then have to use Montpellier - a lot longer journey for us, or further afield. We might decide to drive more often, but holidaymakers will just visit elsewhere, not the lovely little places so many go to at the moment. At present we spend around 4 - 6 weeks in each home all year round, flying half the time, driving the rest. We might cut back on trips, spending longer in each place if Nimes airport shuts.

Agree with your first 3 sentences but setting up/closing down routes is to optimise profit which is, of course the only good reason for running a business.

There is nothing clever about establishing a route, building up a client base and then dumping them! Flybe are flying direct Edinburgh to Limoges on Saturdays July and most of August and they are getting our business. With a bit of luck they will extend in 2011 if Ryanair don't come back.

Although when interviewed on R4 this morning the spokesman said this quarter was expected to be low, as it was out of holiday and business periods. He said their profit for the year was expected to be some massive number of millions - maybe it was billions; I was busy making porrage at the time, so didn't concentrate that well!

But, of course, that is the way he does it, be it in France or the UK (or wherever).  If he doesn't get what he wants, he gets out, and tries another place.  As long as you accept that (whether you agree or not), you will then not be "disappointed" (for that read angry etc) when he pulls out of a place.

It's still one of the reasons why I prefer the train (or car if needs must) in spite of the cost.

Ryanair is a business like any other. If a sector of that business is losing money they review it, and dump it if they can see no prospect of improvement.

Quite frankly, we do the same and that's how our little business has survived in France despite the appallingly high level of obligatory payments to that black hole known as RSI, and 'la crise economique'.

Only yesterday we were talking with other small businesses about the need to analyse what brings in profit, and what (or who!) doesn't, and the need to identify problem clients at an early stage.
