Sky has started issuing new cards.

If you are using the "blue with yellow house" card and do not have access to the new white card , you will soon be unable to view the channels which require a viewing

card.

Such channels include all those to which you subscribe, channels

which can be viewed on a pay per view basis, and also Sky3, Channel 4

HD, Five US, Five US +1, Fiver, Fiver +1 and some ITV regional variants.

Without wanting to go into the legality or illegality of viewing outside the UK...

If you are a Sky subscriber with a UK address, the new card will be sent there.

If you are not a Sky subscriber and have a UK address, contact Sky on 08442 410 595 to order a new Sky FREESAT card (£20?). The new card may not be issued for this service yet...

If you do not have a UK address, bear in mind that the new card will need activating / pairing by phone

Alternatively, get a freesat box to receive all these channels.

I'm sure a TV specialist will correct me if I've got this wrong... [:)]

Not quite.  Freesat will I beleive be the answer in the long term. I have both systems running, and using a combination of Freesat and non Freesat channels you can obtain more than 400,but for the moment you can receive the main Five, but not the others ie Fiver,5 US etc.

Not seen anything about out of contract cards no longer working.  As you can get all the free to air stuff like Ch4 and 5 with an out of contract card or a freesat card why should you not be able to continue to do so? 

Surely these new cards are only of interest to those who subscribe to SKY through a UK address?    Anton, Tim where are you???

The box does not need to be in the UK, however...

The new card is activated by inserting it in a Skybox and calling Sky to give them the details of the Skybox, as shown on the TV screen.

If you call Sky from outside the UK, there is a possibility that Sky may see the tel number as being outside the UK and refuse to activate the card.

The blue cards are still working and, from reading various fora, are still being issued.

As I understand it, the new card contains a different encryption code and the old cards will eventually stop working as they will not read the new encryption.

Hi Ron, not all channels available with the current blue skycard (even if you don't pay a subscription) are available with a normal free to view box.  For example, Five US isn't.  This probably won't be a problem for the majority but as a fan of CSI, I would prefer to carry on getting Five US!

So Claire, if, on the off-hand you know (!), if the card is activated in France but your other half is sitting in their house in the UK, could they not telephone SKY and relay the information on the screen?  [:)]

In the last card swap-out (2003) there was no need to contact Sky,  providing of course one was substituting the correct new card in the correct existing box for which it had been prepared.

I'm not quite sure what Sky would hope to achieve by generating six million or so phone calls to their service centre to check box details,   but then I'm not called Tim or Anton either,  and no longer being a Sky subscriber I shan't bother even to order a free-to-view replacement card,  assuming that they are even being considered.

In fact my reading of the Sky help page suggests that if you have a bona fide subscription card and its corresponding STB already then you won't need to ring Sky.   As in 2003.

I have two of the £20 cards (got them in the Uk in March 2006) .After reading the terms and conditions , it looks like I will have to get new ones.

If we replace Viewing Cards within 5 years (if you have paid £146.81) or 3 years (if you have paid £19.57) of your card’s first enablement, then a replacement Viewing Card will be provided to you free of charge, provided that you have complied with these Conditions. If we replace Viewing Cards after that period, you will need to purchase a new one by paying our then applicable charge (which shall not be more than £20).

Well done Clair , I have just tried restarting one of my boxes without the card.

Result as you say above plus can not get Channel 5 (105) , so no great loss.

You can add Five manually:

  • With your digibox turned on, press the "Services" button (near the top of the remote).
  • Select number 4 (System Setup), and then 4 again ("Add Channels").
  • In the appropriate fields enter the following (you move through the fields using the up and down arrow keys).
  • In the Frequency field enter: 10.773,
  • The next three fields are toggle fields, i.e. using the left and right arrows will change the value.
  • Toggle Polarisation to : H
  • Toggle Symbol Rate to: 22000
  • Toggle FEC to : 5/6
  • Then select the last button - Find Channels.
  • Channel 5 will now be in the list of channels maybe called 6335
  • Use the Yellow button to place a tick beside each one you wish to store

    and when you've finished ticking press "Select". The channel will

    now be stored.

You can view it by pressing the "Services" button, then 6 ("Other

Channels"), use the arrow keys to move to the channel you want and

press "Select".

No, I'm afraid it's not.

Five along with the BBC and other main channels are FTA (free to air) - no card required.

Fiver & Five USA are what Sky call FTV (free to view) which is not the same and not quite true.

They are not subscription channels as such, but you need to buy a FTV Sky card and have a Sky box to watch them.

This is mainly to do with satellite transponder availability which I will go through if you wish.

Hi All,

Just had my new £20 White sky card turned on. I brought the box back to UK as I was comming anyway but no need to do so.

My local dealer has been told by Sky they will not be issuing Freeview cards after the end of Dec and to remove any advertising about them

So get one quick if you are a Five USA or Fiver fan
