1. Many thanks. They supply a wi-fi modem, so that means it can be used as wi-fi OR ethernet? Cheers.
2.
Prerequisites. To obtain the Service, the Customer must have: an independent France Telecom analog line, a touchtone telephone, a modem supplied by Teleconnect, a PC computer using Windows 98 SE, Millenium, 2000 or XP (apparently Linux OK) with at least 128M of active memory ; an Ethernet connection; and, optionally, an active USB port and a wi-fi adapter key or integrated wi-fi. If these prerequisites are not met, quality of Service cannot be assured and Customer may not be technically supported by Teleconnect.
Teleconnect can offer me a good ADSL deal. My current Wanadoo Livebox works fine under Mepis 6.0 (Linux) (ethernet connection). Do I have to have this wi-fi adapter key? What is it? I have a Dell Dimension 3000, plenty of USB ports, but no experience with wi-fi. Many thanks for help.
3. Many thanks to all. That should sort it. I got my 'attestation' at the beginning of this month, based on all the returns made. Clearly the girl was mistaken (English-speaking help line) in saying that all savings are income from which 8% will be taken, when she meant savings interest. What a relief. She had been quite adamant. [:)]
4. Cheers. And income in my case being any savings interest per annum, NOT the amount I happen to transfer on which to live? @ bjsliv - sorry, crossed post! Cheers, peeps.
5. I know it's been done to death, but sometimes the answers aren't evident when so many questions are blurred by employment and pension considerations. In France permanently. The E106's ran out Jan this year. No further extension. No problem. We don't work, no pensions (yet), but live off the equity from the house sale in the UK (all savings in the UK). CPAM were talking about taking 8% of our income. I told the girl that our 'income' was simply pre-taxed savings in the UK, transferred out here as we need it, and that we didn't have an 'income' per se. She then decided to tell me that all our savings are income, and they want 8%! Our savings interest is under the earnings threshold (€7000?) And our French income tax bill is zero. So what gives? Has the CPAM lassie got it wrong? Or do they want 8% of our savings interest which may fall above the threshold? Or something worse? [:(] Cheers.
6. @ Deauville - a friend of mine pressure-washed interior walls no problem at all. Of course, the issue will be drainage with copious amounts of water. Do it in the summer, and squeegee the floors, and you really shouldn't have much of an issue. Whilst the pointing is drying, the whole lot is airing off anyway. Down to individual layout, innit?
7. Are you using their mail system, or an on-line mail e.g. gmail? An awful lot seem to go slow at weekends. All to do with maintenance and server upgrades...
8. @ David - they probably haven't got round to doing you yet... I stand to be corrected, but that was my understanding. It's not just a commune thing either, but it's certainly well implemented sw Deux-Sevres. May be a Pays Mellois initiative. Further feedback - initiated by the Sapeurs after difficulty locating some incidents out in the sticks. Restricted to some cantons, but envisaged to spread. [:D]
9. The engineer will have one to test the line, but he doesn't need yours. He'll have his own. But using yours will tell him your new purchase is functional (or otherwise.)[:D]
10.
My sister in law came to visit navigating by satnav. She used the postcode which was not very satisfactory as our postcode covers about 6 villages and hamlets over about 40sq kilometers. Plenty of villages in France do not have street names how do they manage with that?
All properties in 79 have to be numbered and all streets named. This was completed last year, and the TomTom has virtually all in.
11. Why not just close the browser page? That will log you off. When you click on your bookmarked link again, it should ask for username/password, unless set to remember. That confirms you were logged off previously. (I don't think remaining logged on hurts anyway...)
12. I bought my Magellan GPS 310 through globalpositioningsystems, and was very happy with the service. As for the OP, I've just bought a TomTom 710. Worth its weight in gold around Madrid and Paris. Well worth the money. [:D]
13.
I have a great cordless system of four phones and would like to take them with me, is it possible to fit an adapter?
We asked the same question when we moved here. All our friends have done the same. The short answer seems to be, No. Bite the bullet and change over.
14.
... So what can I do with them... Any suggestions?
I'll take it off you for a charitable beer fund. [:P]
15. Acro props - l'etai (singular). Weldoms have them for 19 euros each. Worth buying if you can't borrow.
16.
If the French obey the code de la route out of fear of being spotted breaking it by the lurking gendarmes, then presumably the code de la route says nothing about use of indicators, roundabouts, keeping your distance behind the car in front ....  etc!  [:)]
Right on! [:D]
17. Oh, Gawd! I drove police traffic cars without a seatbelt, and then the law said I had to wear one. I rode high powered motorcycles without a helmet, and then the law said I had to wear one (except as a Seikh on religious grounds). I can choose whether to ride a horse with or without a helmet. I fly light aircraft, but not yet compelled to wear a parachute (unless in a glider [sometimes] or aerobatic aircraft). My French neighbours chain-saw in flip-flops, but my young nephews and nieces can't play conkers without protective glasses. Be honest, the world is barking, and so are the people that go along with this nonesense about so-called personal safety/protection. Where has the common sense gone? I've been involved in H & E, and to me that's based on common sense, not dictatorial edicts. Whose life is it anyway? If cyclists want to ride without helmets, as adults, that's their prerogative and their risk. End of. It wouldn't be a problem if every other booger saw them in time and gave them room: and so it goes on. Give me some freedom to do what I want without interference from any other body that thinks it knows how to control my life better than I do. I am human: the bloody interferers are NOT!
18. He said that they don't match, not that they don't quite match. World of difference. At the end of the day OP hasn't described the colour variation. Minor, or significant? What was the original agreement? Is there an independent arbiter?  Have you visited the artisan in person? Often worth it. Pin the blighter down in person and get him back to the site. Sort it from there. But for advice and opinion here, we need more info. [:)]
19. I've dozens of bookmarks, and almost without exception, clicking on a link opens the page (Firefox or Dillo) in microseconds. More often than not, these forums have a chronic delay, giving the appearance of almost hanging. I can't believe that the servers are getting swamped with traffic, so is there some other problem? It's rather frustrating most of the time for me. Cheers [;-)]
20. To stop it happening again, under Favourites/Bookmarks (depending on your browser), export them, and if you lose them, import them again. Simple.
21. Assuming you're using Windows, all you have to do is open any web browser (IE, Firefox, Opera), and drag 'n' drop the file onto it. Voila, full screen piccies.
22. I Googled 'wood density', and got this site, first hit: here Does that help? [:)]
23. Well, it's just that the hot water tank was bled, but an expansion piece is going on the cold side. Secondly, it started in winter and it's getting worse, but solved when the boiler is off. Yes? So it just sounds to me as if your hot tank is actually boiling, and maybe not shutting off at the correct temperature. And as it's now constant, I'm assuming that the thermostat has been checked and is working, so it's not that. Just trying to eliminate the variables - what has been established and what hasn't. [:D]
