  1. The Sky+ will work as well in France as any other Sky digibox, which is to say perfectly. For the recording/playback features you will need to fit a dual LNB and run a second coax cable.
  2. >If I try to open a >folder within the main folder, >then the whole system runs >extrodinarilly slow. Should I perhaps >pilt the main folder into >several smaller folders? It might be an idea. 3Gb seems a lot. It may also be that Windows is trying to extract all the mp3 info of all the files for display in tooltips. There is surely a way to turn this off in the registry but I don't know it offhand. >Secondly, I recently installed Win XP >- I did not realise >that I would loose one >of my favorite (and semi-frequently >used) programs - which is >telnet. Hyperterminal comes with WinXP: C:\Program Files\Windows NT\hypertrm.exe
  3. This has been covered extensively here so have a look back through the archives. This will help also: http://www.frenchentree.com/fe-lavie/DisplayArticle.asp?ID=129
  4. You don't say where you are and reception does vary greatly across France for some satellites and channels. However I certainly get several scandinavian channels. See http://www.lyngsat.com for footprints and details.
  5. Normally you should leave the box on at all times, except during storms or prolonged non-use. The missing channels will probably come back after a while if the box is left on. What exactly is the error message?
  6. They told you the truth. FT enable exchanges on a fairly simple basis of size and potential use. The only way to speed up ADSL enabling in very small villages is by creating a petition. If you can get about 50 - 100 names then FT may well let your village jump the queue, if possible.
  7. Uninstall the Tiscali dialer. Never use any sort of ISP dialer: they are all hopeless. The only exception is AOL where you have to use the dialer. See a post that I made here some time ago or http://www.frenchentree.com/fe-lavie/DisplayArticle.asp?ID=130 which both give instructions on how to manually install a dial-up connection in Windows.
  8. If you have opted for preselection you need do nothing: just dial the entire number as usual. Otherwise just replace the leading 0 with a 4 for all numbers, as mentioned.
  9. You can find the other BBC channels on 940 upwards whilst you are waiting for your new card which will fix the problem.
  10. As mentioned: start : all programmes : accessories : system tools also start : run : type "explorer" (without the "") : OK If you don't like the default way that Explorer opens try creating a shortcut using this command : %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,/e,/select,C:\
  11. > At >the moment it runs at >the standard 56kps, although hardly >ever seems to achieve that. You will probably never get the full 56k: it's purely theoretical. 44k to 50k is common. >Does anyone have any experience >of using surge protectors with >modem protection, and if so >what is the best one >to buy? I find that it's most effective just to remove all phone and mains connections during storms.
  12. >have you connected >any clients on Forfait Illimit >on Numeris during the last >month? And if so have >you experienced any problems - I've arranged 3 in the last month. Two work fine and one never worked. The one that didn't work was a question of a changed number, like yours. The last I heard (yesterday) was that the 9Online tech people were aware of the problem and working on it. I am sure that 9Online will give a full refund when the problem is finally solved: they are very good about that. The unlimited bas-debit forfait is still on offer on the 9Online website.
  13. This is very simple. Your message box is full. If you use Webmail then be sure to delete the messages *and* empty the trashcan from time to time. If you use OE then it should be congfigured by default to erase messages as they are downloaded. The OE solution is quicker and simpler.
  14. You will indeed need a new ISP, if only to keep costs down though you can always make international calls to the UK for access, if you like. I posted a long message here some months back that gave specific information about how to configure this. This page is also of interest: http://www.frenchentree.com/fe-lavie/DisplayArticle.asp?ID=130
  15. Your BBC region changing indicates that the new registered address was accepted. ITV etc. going off indicates that the replacement order was processed as this automatically cancels the existing card. You are right in thinking that once you have requested a replacement the card number is flagged and you can't use it again, even if the replacement never arrives. I don't see why you weren't charged though. Had you been charged then one could assume that the card had just been lost in the post and a phone call from the UK would get another issued. Now your only option is to forget the old card and get someone in the UK to ring for a brand new one. There should be no problem with this, even if they already have Sky. The new card will need activating by phone, unlike a replacement card.
  16. > there was a >discreet crack and flash, and >the terminal was mort. What do you mean by "terminal"? Which part is dead? And yes, you should never use a mobile phone near anything electronic (TVs, digiboxes, PCs, microwave oven). I don't like them near my head either. Those phones are very powerful and I won't have one in the house.
  17. If you have a valid Win9x boot floppy and no bootable Win9x CD then boot with the floppy, run fdisk, then format the c drive, then transfer the system using sys c: Then reboot from the floppy selecting "with cd support" then switch to d: and run Windows setup.
  18. Use the free software available here: http://www.smw.se/smwlink/smwlink.htm In fact, if you use a meter (as you always should) you don't need to know the angles: just let the meter guide you.
  19. In theory *new* cards (which can only be ordered by phone, not on the net) will require activation by phone. *Replacement* cards (the ones available on the webpage and also by phone) will not need activation. This is how it always used to work, the only real change being that replacement cards can now be ordered on the net (until December).
  20. >I've noticed recently that every time >I log on to LF >I seem to receive more >and more pop-ups. I >have a sort of racing >up and down the scroll >bar which is uncontrable in >the longer threads. If >I'm trying to post, when >typing the keyboard strokes are >not being picked up. Does this happen on other sites also? If so I would suspect virus activity or a trojan/spyware type pop-up programme.
  21. LAST EDITED ON 20-Nov-03 AT 08:24 AM (GMT) Anyone using a Firewall and who is unable to post messages in these forums needs to allow the referer field to be transmitted. If you are using a Norton Firewall (or Norton Internet Security) then these links explain how to set it up: Versions 2003 & 2004 : http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/docid/2002110811290836 Older versions http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/docid/2000070515373136

  23. If you click on "mark all" when you have finished reading the new messages (which makes sense to me) then the site will take you straight back to the main page where the inbox flag is visible.
  24. Search your hard drive for the cookies called livingfrance.com Delete them. Empty your cache and restart Internet Explorer.
  25. Many web forums have "stickies" whereby any particularly useful message can be permanently attached to the top of the list. This can help prevent people from asking the same old questions over and over again. I had a look on the DCScripts website and the software that runs this forum seems to handle this as an admin tool. They call it an anchored topic. Is there any chance of using this tool here to keep some messages at the top?
