  1. Hi Could anyone tell me whether there is a fixed, or minimum, height from floor level for new electrical sockets? We're having some new ones put in the living room, and wondered whether we'll be able to specify the height of them or not? Thanks
  2. "As I understand it the IOM has its own protection scheme which mimics the UK and covers the first £35K for each individual with each specific Bank/Building Society" In fact, The Isle of Man has its own Depositors Compensation Scheme which guarantees 75% of the first GBP20,000 or currency equivalent held by each depositor.
  3. " I am looking for a small handy one with all the most important verbs? Any advice?" Larousse do a series of small grammar guides including one called "Mini Verificateur: Conjugaison", which I highly recommend; just about every tense / ending for 8000 verbs. It's about 3" x 4", so easy to carry around if you need to. We got ours from Leclerc, cost just €3.32.
  4. Hi There's a space in the URL posted; try: http://www.theyworkforyou.com/wms/?id=2008-04-03a.83WS.3 HTH
  5. "Curiously enough one of our Sky dodgyboxes has taken agin BBC News 24 now it's moved. Ditto the BBC radios on the same transponder, they're all stuttering badly" I thought it was just us; News 24 is unwatchable on the new frequency.
  6. Hi Allan Belated thanks; got it sorted on Thursday. The cheque wasn't actually printed (it's a smallish branch), but they simply have a chequebook for the branch itself and it's just a case of taking the money from our account and giving us a cheque written from their own chequebook. And I can confirm that neither my name nor address appears on the cheque itself. Thanks again for the help.
  7. Hi Would I be right in assuming I can get one of these from our account at La Poste now that they're a 'proper' bank? Never having needed one before; is it something that'll be done while I wait or does it take a few days? Also, does my address appear on the cheque itself and, if so, will I be able to put someone else's address instead? (I'm buying something on behalf a friend, so it'd be better with his address on if that's possible) Thanks for any info.
  8. Hi If you google "Vincent Koma", you'll find that this may be a scam. HTH
  9. Hi Clair That's great, thanks very much.
  10. Hi Just doing my claim today; am I right in presuming that a photocopy of the 'avis d'impot' is OK, with the original of the invoice? Thanks
  11. It's actually http://www.leclercmobile.fr/ (the supermarket). HTH
  12. "Frais de contre-remboursement" That's Cash on Delivery, isn't it? Use a credit card and you'll save that, at least.
  13. Thanks Cathy A neighbour told me it needs to be done by a dealer in the particular brand, and I've managed to find our nearest re-seller so, fingers crossed, we should be sorted.
  14. Hi We have a problem with the door on our woodburner (something untoward happened to the counterweight which allows the door to slide, I think); so, would this be a job for a chimney-sweep? A mason? Or..? (Plumber, my first port of call, said no). Thanks in advance.
  15. "Just out of interest, has anyone come across anyone who has been refused a claim by their French insurance company because their car is still on British plates?" Sort of; a couple from OH's French class were involved in an accident in their UK-registered, French-insured car. The car (can't remember the model, but it was a pretty upmarket saloon, and only two or three years old) was damaged beyond economical repair. The insurers gave them scrap value; their argument was that, as it wasn't registered here, it wasn't a 'car' so was treated purely as a couple of tons of metal.
  16. We use http://svp.co.uk ; even with P&P from the UK they're far cheaper than any French suppliers we found (we buy 50 at a time plus cases, I've no idea how competitive they are on smaller quantities).
  17. Hi Nothing to do with France (as far as I know), but could anyone tell me what this image signifies: http://aycu04.webshots.com/image/28003/2000636002910110467_rs.jpg Guild sign? Something like that? Thanks for any help. :D Oops, sorry; using Firefox on a Mac, looks like a copy & paste job on that link. Link made live
  18. " in the style of confused.com or moneysupermarket.com?" http://www.assurland.fr
  19. "doesn't work in Firefox, the text in the various paragraphs is all over the place." Yes, same for me in both Firefox and Opera (both for Mac, 1280 x 1024). HTH
  20. We use, and would recommend, moneybookers.com; if you do a search, it's been discussed here before.
  21. "Clair: Bugbear, do as I do and just skip his posts. Without the oxygen of replies, he'll soon wither away..." Frankly, that is an unbelievable comment to come from a moderator.
  22. "I had not realised that in France a rectangular village name plate is an automatic warning of a 50 kph limit" In the absence of any other signs, it's 70 within villages, surely?
  23. Extremely belated thanks. I finally managed to 'bump into' a local bloke who had alu/bois windows fitted just before Christmas; he's very pleased indeed, and said there was absolutely no condensation inside. Thanks again.
  24. "I certainly would not like correspondence I have had with local MPs made public. Some of it has contained highly personal information" The "constituents' privacy" argument put forward by certain mendacious, self-serving MPs is apparently worthless, as such information would be protected by data protection legislation anyway.
  25. And a BBC feature on her: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/6654397.stm
