Dear all... I've been off line for several weeks due to problems both sides of the channel... however just thought I would drop you a line to say we're here, we made it, we're settled after a few small teething troubles, cats are fine, puppy is in place and our son is settling in at school without any real problems - he has been a real trooper ... he's the first and only english pupil so he's a bit of a novelty at the moment!  I've even managed to make 'friends' with another mum who's new to the area (we're having coffee next week!!! (I was very very excited about this!)) She wants to learn english and she is going to help me with my French [:D]

I'm looking forward to ploughing through the posts I've missed but for now I'm going out to enjoy the sunshine - it's far too nice to stay indoors!! [:D]

xx

thank you all for your good wishes... it's been a dream for so long I'm not sure the reality has sunk in yet!

We had a few teething troubles and we've had to bring our building plans forward as some things are a little more urgent than we first thought but it's no big deal... we knew it needed doing and at least I get my new kitchen sooner than I thought!  OH has also agreed we should also arrange for the pool for next spring so we're looking into this too!  If anyone out there can recommend a good local builder for plumbing/kitchen/heating/fosse/re-wire and a new garage we're all ears!  I found a couple of companies on Angloinfo but personal recommendation is always good!  We're not in an old house by french standards but everything does need to be updated...

We've moved to the Vern valley partway between Bergerac and Perigueux and the view and local area is even better than we remembered or imagined... not one regret... except maybe we shouldn't have taken so long to get here!

Cheers

p.s. is that really you twinkle?  I missed your TV debut the other day...  [:D]

Wait till the long cold winter days arrive [:(] Wait till you are going out of your mind with despair at the thoughts of waking up to another long wet day in the Dordogne with only the termites to entertain you as you lie in bed waiting for the spring to return. Wait till you look forward to going out for the bread which will be the highlight of your day.  You will be wishing you were back here, you will!
Well some of us living in the Dordogne find plenty to do in the winter, though obviously not as much as in the summer - you want to lay in bed and fester, your perfectly welcome to do so but it's not obligatory.
Well said!!

S, winter is a pain wherever you are.  I could lie in bed all day on a rainy day in UK in mid July!!

Winters in the Dordogne are so depressing because everywhere is so dead and cold and wet, and if you are in the country, then you may aswell hibernate with the hedgehogs till it's all over! There are some great things to do in bed besides sleeping [:D] I love hunt the sausage and hide the sherbet lemon [:-))]You can read a book or stare at the 70's flower power wallpaper or even dream about being back in England with all your friends (if you have any) wondering what they are all getting upto. I spent one Christmas in the Dordogne and it was the most miserable Christmas I can remember[:(]

Do you live in the Dordogne S?

In our area, last Xmas started about 20th December, we had 28 for lunch Xmas Eve, lots happenening until 28th December or so and then New Year was great - a good few restaurants open, places and people to visit, lots of visiting and socialising - and whilst the rest of the winter isn't as frantic, there's work to do, house to work on, garden to get put right for the spring.  And lots of people about, we needed a rest in January cos Xmas was so hectic.

OK, it rains a bit and can get cold but that's the winter everywhere, sets the soil and nature up for the spring. And as for the wallpaper, winter's a great time to strip it and make the house the home in France that you want.

Tony

I love the attitude you have.  This will be our first winter.  I am a little apprehensive because I worry about the cold.  Still we have loads of logs in and, after waiting since May, it seems that we will have our woodburning stove in the kitchen as well as the cooking range in place by the end of next week.

Also, another chap is going to be along to put thermostatically controlled radiators in our bathrooms.  I have not lived in a non-centrally heated house since my late teens and I am not sure that now is the right time in life to have to do without such comforts.

Despite all that, I am eager to experience everything on offer.  Anyway, it rained a lot when we were in Wales and, because we lived by the sea, it always felt extra fresh because of the gusts that blow in from the sea.  I expect to do lots of walks with the dog and I must say that just being in the countryside gives a tremendous boost to my spirits.

When I wake up in the morning and see trees and greenery around me, I feel a wonderful sense of wellbeing and very, very lucky indeed to be here.
