Tony, I did have a house in the Dordonge (not far from St Cyp) and it was wonderful in the summer, but I could not believe how cold and wet it was in winter [:(] The neighbours warned us "it is very sad in winter" but we were determined to spend Christmas in our lovely big stone town house in one of the most beautiful villages in France. Obviously it seems that a dog would have made it all so much more pleasurable [:D]  I never tried gardening in the frost or rain in the middle of winter [8-)] We would drive all over the area too, but only because it was warmer in the car! PPS, have you got a dog? [:)]

Winters in the Dordogne are so depressing because everywhere is so dead and cold and wet, and if you are in the country, then you may aswell hibernate with the hedgehogs till it's all over! There are some great things to do in bed besides sleeping [:D] I love hunt the sausage and hide the sherbet lemon [:-))]You can read a book or stare at the 70's flower power wallpaper or even dream about being back in England with all your friends (if you have any) wondering what they are all getting upto. I spent one Christmas in the Dordogne and it was the most miserable Christmas I can remember[:(]

Wait till the long cold winter days arrive [:(] Wait till you are going out of your mind with despair at the thoughts of waking up to another long wet day in the Dordogne with only the termites to entertain you as you lie in bed waiting for the spring to return. Wait till you look forward to going out for the bread which will be the highlight of your day.  You will be wishing you were back here, you will!
