New Number Plates

Is it possible to change to the new number plates on an existing vehicle? I am asking as I have seen lots of old cars with new number plates. Thank you.

A new type registration must be issued when the car has a new owner or changes address. After that the number is attached to the car for life.

Subsequent to the introduction of the new registration plate system, I think that they have now also opened up the new registration system so that owners of cars with "old" registrations can now choose to get a "new" registration without a change of ownership or address. However, this is entirely voluntary, whereas, as you say, on sale or change of address the new registration plate is obligatory. Again, as you note, whichever route is used, once the car has a "new" style registration then this stays with it for life.

This is the official site - I haven't found anything there about choosing to re-immatriculate a vehicle without a change of situation but it's probably there for anybody who has the time and inclination to look.

Thanks for that, Will. I have just checked through and according to the site - hidden within the FAQs - it says that at present, unless there is a change of owner or address or other such reason (including running out of space for CT stamps) then at present you cannot get new plates for a vehicle already registered under the old system. I recall reading that it is intended that this would be allowed eventually, but the date for this extension has been put back at least twice so far.

The option to voluntarily change to new plates was scheduled to become available on 15 April 2010, one year after the launch of the new SIVsystem.  However, as Pickles says, it's been postponed.

I am curious. There are lots of older cars on the roads with new plates, in fact there seems to be more cars with new plates than old.

When an older car changes hands to a new owner outside the previous owner's department, on re-registration the car will get new-style plates.

The bit I thought bizarre about the new system is that (according to the Cantal prefecture website) if you register a sufficiently old car (over 30 years) as a vehicule de collection, you get a new-style number plate but if you wish you can have it in white (or silver) on a black background. Do the plate makers have the facility to do this I wonder?

[/quote]I assume this is for the sake of aesthetics - it keeps a collectable car looking authentic.  Presumably there are specialists, at the very least, who will still make up the old style plates?

Arch criminal that I am though I have got black and silver old style plates on my MGB despite the fact it's not 'collection' [:-))]

Had them made up at a car show and the naughty boys didn't even want to see my CG [:D]

Must say I do not like the new plates..

Now, this is childish but as our house is in 31 it is a long way down and the only other thing the other side of 31 is Spain. I look out for the first car I see with 31 on it. It is normally on the A71 between Orleans and Vierzon. However, the new plates make spotting the 31 very difficult.

We live in 66 and and we too are a long way down and right near the Spanish border.

I love to spot my fellow PO drivers.

They are nearly all driving virtually incognito these days with just the tiny 66 badge next to the number plate.

Shame.
