1. It is a complete con trick designed to make the politicians mates rich. Yet another stealth tax. We shouldn't and don't legally need passports especially to visit the EU but get made to use them. The other big con at the moment is making people have the new Euro Registration Document for vehicles - A4 4pp (in from memory 3 colours) its amazing the French can get by with one page of A5 in black and white!
2. Got the following email today seems they have been copying stuff from other websites and now under threat of closure which is a shame as they offer a very useful service.
3. These two sites will give you all the info you'll need. Happy bargain hunting.... http://www.aladinmag.com/html.fr/index.php http://vide-greniers.org/ Dog
4. Auchan sell cheddar but don't realise what it is or how it is made. So far they have sold 3 types a good West Country Farm Cheddar, with a good strong flavour and bite, probably one of the best cheddars I have tasted and it does not use animal rennet. They have also sold an orange coloured Scottish factory made cheddar that has a weak flavour and also another pale tasteless one. Interestingly they call it all Farm Cheddar and charge the same price €12.?? a kilo. When I last went to the Auchan cheese counter they asked if I'd come to collect my order so it seems they will get it in for you.
5. Lapeyre had an offer on of non slip freeze proof tiles which did the pool patio nicely at only €4.99 a square metre. Also bought floor tiles from a small independent company housed in a stables where Napoleons horse once stayed! they were also better value than the big chains. You have to shop around.
6.
I think the cult is finally passing away. CDs of the greatest hits of Edith Piaf and other dead or tragic (or both) singers are regularly in the supermarket for about 4 euros. Doesn't suggest a hug...
I wouldn't listen to Piaf or Josephine Baker on anything other than 78rpm recordings from the era. You cannot beat vibration in and vibration out - on a good gramaphone its just like the singer is in the room with you...
7.
I enjoyed George's performance as much as everyone else. However, if you read a more detailed transcript of the hearing, it is not as clear cut as it came across in the news headlines. Although, he ...
I agree - George Galloway picks his words far to exactly and cleverly to be telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Is he or was he a lawyer?
8. It was an interesting performance. George Galloway is either a very wronged man or a very wrong man. I do not believe anything any politician says. My advice to Mr Galloway is to buy a bullet proof vest and employ a food taster.
9. Thanks for your reply. I have questioned things along the way and sometimes they have altered things and other times I am told that's the way it's done. I can speak with knowledge and conviction about my own trade but I am not a builder, plumber, electrician or plasterer.
10. The builders have nearly finished our renovations and there are somethings that I find questionable both in design, construction and quality of finish. It would be useful to know if there are professionals available in France to give unbiased advice on work that has been carried out and suggest amelioration.
11. I have just had an ensuite and a family bathroom put in. The extractor fans just duct into a space above the ensuite and a boxed space above the shower in the bathroom. I have been told that all French extractor fans exhaust into the roof space - I dont have one, but even then I'd have thought you'd be asking for condensation problems. Surely the extractors should be ducted to outside? Advice please?
12.
Hi Have a look at this site for the Charente: seems they get together the last Friday of each month and have something special planned for 1st May. http://amc16.free.fr/calendriere.htm val
Crumbs can you get knobblies to fit a ZZR?
13. Perigueux Primeurs is getting rid of all its British products and has them on sale at half price - I did leave some beer.

Turf

My garden is a sea of mud after the pool and the new fosse have been put in. I fancy the lazy root - sorry route to a new lawn. How much should I be paying for turf? Or should I grow it myself?
15.
Where does all this toxic and nasty stuff come from, its toxic of you drink it Do you really think the French are silly enough to sell "toxic" products in Bricos. Xylophane is no more toxic than an...
???? If it kills it kills.
16. Have you tried Auchan or your local Moroccan shop? Otherwise it's time to make your own - best wait til the sun shines though.
17. I have no advice other than to follow my idea to live forever or die in the attempt. I hate funeral companies they charge a fortune and are not personal. Should I fail in my attempt to live forever I have told my brothers they must build a coffin out of old pallets, they must dig the grave too. My father is a church warden and has bought all the family plots in his local church - country village plots being at a premium. Did anyone see in the newspapers last week a funeral director committed suicide and had prepared his own coffin made out of a wardrobe decorated with the only useful flowers - cauliflowers!
18. There are also two more Trocs in Perigueux. The one near Bouzelac is run by French Canadians I think as the speak very good English. The other is near Auchan and has only just re-opened.
19. I have just had a 5000 litre fosse installed to the new specification - it doesn't seem to have a grease trap can this be right. I am getting conflicting vague answers - such as the grease trap is in the fosse not separate or it isn't necessary - I am perplexed.
20. I'd left the dart board on its stand in the garden with the darts stuck in it. I found the two guys who were installing the swimming pool one a French man the other a Basque having a game. They were throwing from ten metres with not much accuracy. I explained that the oche should be a little nearer the board and that darts should only be played when accompanied by beer, so I supplied some beer. Not surprisingly accuracy increased and they enjoyed the game.
21. I was forced into the insurance as without indicating I wanted it the site would not go to the next stage of the booking procedure. I also noticed (having been messed about with my French credit card and having to repeat the booking with my UK credit card) that the insurance in France was cheaper???
22. http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm As mentioned above a very useful site.
23. I clean the glass in our wood burner with a plastic scratchy and a solution of warm water and white vinegar, dried off with a ball of newspaper.
24. As previously posted I did ring the number to resolve the problem with the credit card. I think it's just a karmic thing as I spent years involved in confusion marketing with travel agents.
25. I booked a RyanAir flight yesterday and got increasingly hot under the collar. Previous night the outward flight was 19.99 and the same for the return, following morning outward was 59.99 and 19.99 return. I booked using my French credit card and got a message saying it couldnt authorise payment and to ring and quote Ref: XXX to make the booking. So I eventually found the pay to phone telephone number only for a message saying there was no such number. So rebooked with my UK credit card, meanwhile in only 20 minutes the price had risen 20.00 on both outward and return! It also now seems imposible to NOT buy the insurance. Oh well it's only money...
