Hi about 15 years ago someone said to me "if you live abroad for more than 12 months, or marry a foreigner, you become a stateless person". He had been abroad for 20+ years, had never worked in his home country, and was married to a foreigner. Happily, he is now back in his own country, and very happy ! Worth thinking about ? Peter

Hi I include this as something for website owners to ponder on. I started with a free domain from netfirms (http://tlp.netfirms.com/). It was the only free hosting I could find without the word free in the URL ! As visitors increased I needed to have my own domain name. My logic was : The majority of my visitors come from links and search engines A very similar URL only works if it is .com, and people try to type it into the browser address bar and make a mistake. The days of people registering McDonalds and trying to hold McDonalds to ransome are long gone My site is very small, and not worth anyone trying to pirate a similar name So, I registered only one name And http://www.the-languedoc-page.com came into being. Then, an apparently reputable company, (who have many references on my website) posted an ad on my forum for domain names for sale. Amongst the names for sale was http://www.thelanguedocpage.com Yes click on it ! It has been unsold since February. Does anyone have any ideas ? Peter

"Yes Peter, his wings are flapping around for me How do you add these onto your signature and where do you find them?" Hi You add them to your signature using HTML (the image file must appear somewhere on the web). It looks like this : <IMG src="http://www.the-languedoc-page.com/images/flamant.gif"> You can find images by keying "free animation gifs" into google, or make your own ( try here : http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/ . Bonne chance Peter

Hi I've been down the same road. Degrouptest said that ADSL would be available on 2/3/05. The date did not change over 6 months. Wanadoo said unavailable. Come the 2/3/05 Degrouptest said now available - Wanadoo only. Wanadoo said unavailable. But it was available, and after waiting for others to test it, I signed up with Wanadoo (again) because they were the only ones offering ADSL. I don't like Wanadoo, but I had no choice. And, I guess we are too small to be degroupe in the near future. The distance from your nearest node is important. I've got 2mb, but I can see houses with 8mb & 512kb from here. The postcode does not help : you need to check out the actual phone number to calculate the degradation over distance. However, the difference is unbelievable. I recently was travelling and accessed the dial up again with my laptop : like watching paint dry ! Peter

Hi I've found the link to the scam fighting site : http://www.419eater.com Instead of deleting Spam, they attack ! In order to prove the scammers are genuine, they ask for photos with certain messages on them ( http://www.419eater.com/images/trophy_room/bambra_guei.jpg), and they show examples of , just possibly, forged documents ( http://www.419eater.com/images/hall_of_shame/jang_ogene.jpg  Snow in Nigeria ? Definitely worth a visit. Peter

Hi The photo was taken in Sete on july 14. The jousting takes place along the Languedoc coast, and in a few other places in France. Apparently, it appears on some Egyptian reliefs dating from 2500 BC, and was first recorded in France around 1270 AD during the crusades. A map of where it takes place is here : http://www.joutes.com/geographie/europe.htm and there is more info here : http://www.joutes.com/ Peter

Hmm It doesn't work with roundabouts does it ? Though people still try. And I'm pretty sure there is priority from the right in Australia. But they drive on the left ? Peter

Hi Why not use bricks, or concrete blocks ? They are available in different sizes, give a stable support, and a surface to tile onto. They are pretty cheap, too ! Peter

Hi some non residents here needed emergency hospital treatment about 12 months ago. They left the hospital around 05.00 before the Caisse had opened. Despite leaving all their details, French address, UK address, insurance info etc they have still not received the invoice. But, I believe it will arrive eventually. Peter

Cancelling Wanadoo ADSL
Mpprh replied to Marion's topic in French Satellite TV, French Internet and Telephone
Hi It pays top read the small print ? Offers such as a modem for Euro 1 more are invariably tied to a minimum period. And the small print says : If you cancel within the period you are liable to pay the balance of the minimum period And you may have a notice period of 1/2/3 months to cancel Peter -
Hi I'm not too far away, and we've had less than 2 inches of rain since October. We have a green lawn thanks to water from an irrigation canal which is exempt from the restrictions. We also use it for the pool. So maybe Carpentras people have similar solutions. But we also recuperate rainwater for the potager ......... it is surprising how much you can collect from even a small shower. Of course, I would never suggest anything illegal, but many of my neighbours top up their pools overnight ! Peter
