  1. I wouldn't think there is a way. You wouldn't be able to take pounds out of a UK bank account in France. You would only be able to take money in euros. So I would assume if you are in the UK you could use your french bank card to take money out of your french bank account but you would only be able to get pounds. You could of course then exchange those for euros at a bank but I would think it would cost you a bit altogether as you would have 2 costs.
  2. Our french teacher uses them. Usually for grammar and pronunciation through reading. We do a lot of just talking in between the bouts of grammar though to lighten things a bit. They seem to me to be designed for youngsters- this based on subject matter. I would say mainly 14-18 age group.
  3. Do people honestly think that any other party in power would have spent more on flood defenses? To a man they would have done nothing until faced with the necessity of doing something. And how you plan for one months rainfall in one day is beyond me.
  4. So what would happen if-like us-we qualify by contribution, but I personally don't have enough money in my own right to qualify? Most of our income comes from my husband's pension. I know quite a few couples like this-no OAP,not working and the wife with less income than the husband (in some cases no income at all)
  5. andyh4 is right-the rabies must be up to date and have no gaps. If your dog has no current rabies vaccination then the 21 days must elapse between injection and travel. Dogs must go to the vet between 1 and 5 days before travel for worming ect. Our vet also gives ours a quick health check and stamps the passport. A friend used BF with a pet friendly cabin and said it wasn't worthwhile. There is no area to walk dogs and she said there were lots of dogs howling and barking from cabins were they had been left by their owners. Our dog traveks in the back of the car where she stays throughout the crossing. She has her own bedding so everything smells of home. She never seems stressed or worried when we return to the car.
  6. We only accessed the french health system 6 months ago. We had a bill for July Aug and Sept which we paid but we have also received nothing yet for the last 3 months Oct -Dec. We are in north dordogne.
  7. Love all kinds of offal-and much easier to buy here than in the UK. Andouillettes (sp?) as well-both out daughters love them as well and have done since they first had them over 20 years ago when over on holiday. I have to say it often raised eyebrows -of the french waiters/waitresses- when they ordered them in restaurants. Often followed by a whispered- 'do you know what they are?'
  8. Same in the UK though if you buy anything organic /free range.
  9. You can give your notaire proxy to sign in your absence. Neither of you need to be there.
  10. Me too-we have caller recognition and if a name doesn't come up I don't answer . They can leave a message if they really need me.
  11. But if they are asylum seekers shouldn't they request asylum in the first safe country they come to? If France,Spain, Italy ,Greece et al decide not to enforce this but allow them to travel aross their countries to get to Calais-why is that the UK's fault? That's like saying it's my fault I get burgled because I have a better TV than the theif.
  12. In the interests of fairness-as I also read the same post on another forum-we have had a CA account for many years, even before we bought a house here, and have never had any problems. We are with CA Britline and everything has always been dealt with efficiently and politely. It 's unfair yo tar the whole of CA with the same brush.
  13. Dreadful new layout. With the old one I could run my eye down and see new topics and comments in the sections that interested me. Now I have to go on active topics and they are all jumbled up. Why do people have to 'improve' something that didn't need improving and always make it worse???
  14. When I worked in retail I remember an iron which had a warning in the instructions-' Do not use on clothes whilst wearing them'. Why would anyone need instructions like that? The only reason I can think of is that someone has tried it and sued the manufacturer using the reason-'You didn't tell me I couldn't'
  15. Correze can be cheap BUT it can also be remote with small villages with not many facilities locally. As my brother said-who also had a house over here-how far do you want to travel because you've run out of milk?
  16. You can buy flour which is labelled 'gateau flour'-it's a self raising flour. Some people say it's not the same as UK SR flour but I never have problems making sponge cakes with it and they rise ok.
  17. The same rules apply if you live in France-you can't buy Euromillion tickets through the UK Lottery website but you can physically buy a ticket if you are in the UK.
  18. I enjoyed it as well. We read it as my book club choice and everyone else thought it was a very good book.
  19. I went into our local garage armed the correct term and asked for a revision . The lady at the desk called it a une vidange and when her husband, the mechanic ,came into the office he called it un service. So take your pick!!
  20. I agree Hereford. We only have the one property (our former family home) and because we declare half the amount each it's well below limit so haven't paid tax in the UK. Always declared on our french forms though and so far (touch wood) never taken into account. Good job as we use it to pay our private health care whilst trying to get into the french health service.
  21. Thanks for that info Daft Doctor. I'm in the process of applying to join the health service here (I thought you had to be here 5 years but have heard that you should be allowed in earlier )so thst will come in useful.
  22. Not in receipt of OAP yet so not 'a la charge'of the UK. As far as I am aware social charges are payable unless you have an S1.
  23. For what it's worth:- We own our UK property in joint names. It's rented out. Each year we each get a self assessment form from the UK which we fill in-split the rent down the middle, each declaring half. As it's lower than the UK personal allowance we have paid no tax on this in the 4 years we have been here. We also declare in on our French tax forms but pay no tax as it would be taxed in the UK- IF TAX WERE DUE. You do have to pay social charges on the rental incoms if you are in the french health system. I don't know why you get a personal allowance if you live in France. I only know we get the correct forms and fill them in correctly (a very nice lady from the Tax Office in the UK told us which bits to fill in) and return them on time. And so far no tax demand.
  24. ADAC ? (Read it first as ACDC !! )
  25. Listened to a Muslim academic on BBC news this morning and she said that it was not absolutely forbidden to make images of the prophet and that indeed there were representations that existed that were revered by Muslims.
