Russethouse
Are you really that timid you have a man on the outsideIts not timid - its etiquette.[;-)]Yes, blushing and laughing, I must have been thinking about Mark Rampakash (sp)at the time. Russethouse
Dick, I'm relying on you - has cooperlola got the reason why men should walk on the outside correct ?
Christine Animal
Depends which way you're going and which side of the road you're on, not to mention on which side he wears his sword. Anyway in those days they didn't have pavements.
Dick Smith
The reason as I heard it was that in the days of horse-drawn traffic the roads tended to be awash with slightly diluted horse dung, and this would be splashed onto the clothes of pedestrians. The man therefore took the 'chivalrous' position and also took the splash. I've also seen it said to be because of the danger of being hit by passing horses/vehicles - and as Christine points out - nothing to do with swords, which would be totally illogical - unless men changed the side of their sword when changing direction... Tay
My husband has said the same thing as Dick; that men protected women from splashes created from passing coaches. Katie's comments do ring true though. Back in Kent, quite a few men walked in front of their women. I can only assume that they did this in the hope that their ladyfriend would be distracted by a tempting shop window, and they could then disappear into one of the numerous pubs... powerdesal
If the men were in front, how would they know that the lady had been distracted? Better to be behind and easier to slope off!!!!!!
Cassis
Is this the sort of thing? Man on the outside, walking in front. My idea of chivalrous.Merry Xmas again.
Pads
Is this the reason the man sleeps on the wet side of the bed too? Sorry its been hard night(shift) and I couldnt resist please excuse me and my sad sence of humour[:$]
