NormanH
Is there a thread on this?I have quite a list of recommendations of French films I have enjoyed, but don't want to post it in the wrong place.Watching with subtitles in French is also a good way to improve language skills for people who are getting more confident in the language. Clair
Here is fine Norman [:)].Type away, I am interested in reading your recommendations, as a lot of French films passed me by when I was in the UK.

5-element
What about all the great whodunnits by Claude Chabrol?"Le Boucher""L'Enfer""Poulet au vinaigre""Rien ne va plus"Francois Truffaut "Les 400 coups"Claude Goretta "La Dentelliere" (The Lacemaker)
Clair
La Dentellière is near the top of my list!I remember a typically heated battle-of-the-sexes discussion with a (man) friend, whose view was that Pomme, the main female character so beautifully played by Isabelle Hupert, did not deserve any sympathy, as François, the main male character, had afforded her every opportunity to better herself. My hotly defended view was that his eagerness to "improve" her rather than accept her as she was and her inability to match his high expectations, were the reason for her eventual breakdown.Such a long time ago... NormanH
I'll look out for that then, thanks. I have never seen it and it sounds as if I'm in for a treat.I welcome your suggestions, and hope for more.It was of course just a personal list, not an attempt at naming the greats.I set my self a couple of rules: they had to be films I had seen recently enough to be sure that I still feel I can recommend them, and that I could find a trailer.I enjoyed some of the Chabrol (I haven't seen all of 5e's list) but a while back, and I couldn't find a trailer for 'le Boucher'.I forgot to mention 'L'auberge Espagnole' perhaps because it isn't anything more than great fun..And I have found another 'realist' film that I haven't yet seen, but the trailer is wonderful! Frenchie
Have you ever seen Beaumarchais l'insolent ?I loved that film, life of the famous 18th century writer, beautiful costumes, excellent acting. http://www.linternaute.com/cinema/film/2982/beaumarchais_l_insolent.shtmlJust an extract http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUov8dl-i5M
Anton Redman
Sorry French is becoming worse rather than better as the years pass. BBC used to show classic French films on Sunday afternoons but :Les enfants du Paradis - La belle et Le bete - Le salaire du peur ( the Wages of Fear) - Le Boucher - Bosilano - La balance are on my listPretty sure the first remake of 'The Postman only knocks twice' is Italien rather than French but saw it dubbed in French
Clair
Thanks for the list, Norman.Several of these films are already on my DVD wish-Iist.I have not seen La graine et le mulet nor Il y longtemps que je t'aime but have read very good reviews of both. The Pagnol adaptations are such enjoyable classics, always worth watching when they're on the box. There's such poignancy to Daniel Auteuil's interpretation.I saw Cyrano a long time ago and I would enjoy it again if I came across it, although I'm not keen on Depardieu. I feel he has become complacent and lacks hunger in his interpretations.
5-element
"Marius et Jeannette" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119620/ a sort of more modern Pagnol, very nice feelgood movie."Nationale 7" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0239695/"Ma Vie en Rose" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119590/plotsummary and for a quirky comedy, "Gazon Maudit" with the wonderful Josiane Balasko, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113149/NormanH, "Le boucher" is also "La femme infidele" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064323/

mint
I look forward to Marius et Jeannette as I am a bit of a fan of Pagnol's.I watched la gloire de mon père on CD and I have le chateau de ma mère somewhere. It's finding the time to watch that's the problem.

mint
I've only heard of the 3 books you mention, not read them. What I meant were the biological trilogy. La gloire de mon père and le chateau de ma mère were the 1990 films made by Yves Robert. BTW, I meant DVD and not CD, silly me.I think you'd like the films, Norman. They are funny and sad and touching and full of joy (informative too); everything a good film should be.
5-element
Films by Robert Bresson (in the 60's) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Bressonsuch as "Mouchette", or "Au hasard, Balthazar" - are heartbreaking.Louis Malle (already mentioned) with the classic, cult "Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051378/
NormanH
Some of the links on this thread don't seem to work, unless you copy/paste them into a new tab.I envisage hours of pleasure ahead..On a practical note. I am lucky to live in a largish town with an excellent new Mediatèque, with a Cinema club and within distance of FNAC in Montpellier. For those who don't is there the equivalent of inter-library loan in France, and if so does it apply to DVDs as well as books? Clarkkent
Un long dimanche de fiançaillesA film which is beautiful to look at, and which explores many aspects of 20th century French history eg WW1 and capital punishment.La reine MargotSex and violence, yes, but a superb performance from Daniel Autueil.Les Triplettes de BellevilleAnimated. Bizarre but great fun.My list does not include 8 Femmes which I think is dire.

Of course, even in a town of about 6,500 people, we have at least one video shop (or maybe two), both within walking distance, and that is always good value.I don't know of any inter-library loan system here. Frenchie
Je l'aimais A film that really touched my (' soapy?? ) soul - " Si tu savais comme je l'ai aimée... " ( = If only you knew how much I loved her )- " Je ne comprends pas pourquoi vous n êtes pas parti avec elle " ( = I don't understand why you didn't leave with her ) That s the croax of the matter, he was already involved with another woman..so he let that other woman he loved go ; and yet, now he thinks " J'ai laissé partir l'amour de ma vie , pour rester avec une femme que j'ai définitivement abimée... " ( = I let the love of my life go, .. to stay with a woman I have broken forever .. )http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVvQd4F_QzQ " I didn't know it was possible to love like that "
