AnOther
Having got our little snail ready for it's first brief foray I'm receiving conflicting advice as to the need, or otherwise, for a Camping Carnet. The general concensus seems to be that it's not neccessary to have one but other opinions would be appreciated.

gosub
It's not necessary to have one but it can be useful, it saves leaving your passport at reception and you could get some discount at certain sites. I think it depends how many times a year you go camping.

gosub
What is a Camping Carnet please? It's a document proving your name and address with third party insurance liability included, obtained from motoring/camping clubs in UK & France for a fee. cooperlola
Thank you chaps. I've camped a bit over the past few years and never come across this so wondered if it was an advantage/necessity or what.Ta.[:)]
AnOther
Haven't quite decided yet, fancy a spot of sea air to be honest so due west the Atlantic or SE to the Med, both about 160miles or 3-4 hours away.[:D]
Sunday Driver
We've camped all over France for many years staying at all types of campsites. In every case, we've been asked for our carnet. The average campsite reception can't usually be described as being overly secure, so imagine if your passport got lost by the campsite - or stolen? Given the hassle you'd face trying to get a replacement, shelling out a few euros for a camping carnet would seem to be a no-brainer. Plus as mentioned earlier, many sites offer money off for carnet holders....
cooperlola
So I thought, right-o, I'll Google this and have a look. And...http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=3606
Benjamin
I have two (French) friends in this area who between them have owned campsites for 39 years. They wouldn't know what a camping carnet was if it bit them on the bum. They do ask to look at a passport for passing trade i e off the street and not previously booked, but this is immediately returned. AnOther
Two utterly opposing opinions and experiences, you'll understand why I'm a tad confused about needing one then [:-))]
gosub
All the larger sites I have been on in France & Spain have asked for a carnet and if you don't have one they will keep your passport or Titre de Sejour until your departure.

I don't know what Brits coming over from the UK did, but quite possibly had to leave their passports.
Mr Coeur de Lion
We stayed at a campsite a couple of years back, albeit in a chalet. We were not asked for anything which was just as well as our passports were locked safely up at home as they always are.
