1.
Is that because you are an expensive woman kitty? ;)
It wasn't the reason I picked the second one - I just prefer that one. But my OH would agree I am expensive I suppose
2. Not Ikea - but very much along the same lines. The store is Alinéa http://www.alinea.fr/ There is a location map for the Limoges store.
3. I've bought a desktop, and a laptop from Dell France, both with QWERTY keyboards and English software. Just ring the number given on the website to place the order. If you prefer to use English they will put you through to an English speaking person.
4. We've bought 2 computers in France from Dell France. You can order qwerty keyboard and all the software in English - you need to telephone them (they take your number and ring back). If you wish you can ask for a person who speaks English. In both cases the PC arrived in less than a week.
5. This company is excellent http://www.jardinexpress.fr/Index.asp

8. Large dealership at Brantome, dept 24.
9. Protection is necessary all year round. Despite Frontline our spaniel cross died from tick disease in February 2 years ago.
10. If you have a Retif near you, you will find plenty of it.  Here is a link (go to "emballages", then "papiers de soie") to buy online if you are too far away from a shop. http://www.retif.eu/FR/Accueil.awp
11. We just recently had an order from British Corner Shop. Delivered in days, everything exactly as ordered. Every item double wrapped individually in bubblewrap and in perfect condition.
12. I used to travel back Portsmouth-Caen with overnight cabin - now travel afternoon, arrive Caen approx 10pm, good small hotel within couple hundred yards, ensuite (single) room for 28 Euros.  Good night's sleep before driving south, and much less expensive.
13. Lorna, I don't worry too much about using 1 tbspn of soy (reduced salt!), and a tbspn of honey very occasionally to a marinade with a wine vinegar - for a family quantity it's not going to do you much harm.  Or a "sprinkle" of balsamic now & then.  It certainly doesnt seem to make any difference to all the regular tests I have.  I sometimes have shredded wheat (not a great fan!) which has no added sugar or salt.  The no sugar drinks are the most difficult, although it is improving here - Carrefour have NAS lemonade.   I hold my hand up to having Tesco NAS squashes brought out by friends coming by car, & you can order most of above bits, and other salt/sugar free from British Corner Shop.   Try Canderel powder artificial sweetner for porridge - you can cook with it too.
14. I have been "salt free" for almost three years, after a stay in hospital.  And had to be alcohol, sugar, salt and  fat free.It was really difficult at first, but your tastebuds will adjust - to the point where you will realise that most foods prepared foods, and bread, only taste of salt. Soy sauce is a definite no-no - liquid salt in a bottle.   I use herbs and spices all the time for flavouring and  lemon juice.  There are good websites for salt free cooking.  I also buy salt free and sugar free crackers (Auga).   I have found tinned tuna without salt - but generally there is not much available - it has to be home cooking.   Most boulangeries are willing to have salt/sugar free bread to order.  Don't use the lo-salt - I was told too much potassium and bad for your kidneys.  Good luck.
15. I've found the best way is small amount of sterling from PO or hole in the wall, then use French mastercard for all purchases.
16. Congratulations Want2move.  You won't regret it I'm sure.   We looked at a house in the morning, returned in the afternoon, signed the following morning.  Intention to move within 2/3 years.  Sold in UK in a month, took early retirement and arrived 6 weeks later.  That was in 1991 and we are still in the same house, very happy here, and we are just 10 mins from Piegut.  You picked a lovely area.
17. Congratulations!  We married here in 1992 (already resident) and it was five months before necessary certificates, translations, etc etc. were all gathered together in the manner which pleased the Prefecture - each time we thought we had cracked it they asked for something else not previously mentioned.
18. We bought refill gas for our gas lighter from Gitem - they were in a basket on the counter.
19. I have to use gmail to friends/family with yahoo and tesco, who reject my (orange) emails.  Yesterday I had once bounce back from Hotmail saying "Mail rejected by Windows Live Hotmail for policy reasons.  The mail server IP connecting to Hotmail has exhibited namespace mining behaviour".

Dentist

I have recently had a bridge - including root canal work, xrays, etc etc, total was 1800 Euros.  The dentist gave me a devis first.  I also had a contribution from my top-up of several hundred Euros.

idioms

I recently bought from The Book Depository "101 French Idioms".  Excellent value at GBP3-11 including p&p.  Hilariously illustrated, each idiom has french language examples of use, plus full English translation at rear of book.
22. We had a 35m canadian pine felled after the '99 hurricane.  It was next to the house and the top 5m came off and pierced our garage roof during the storm, so we decided to have it felled. It was immediately next to the house (the span of branches were over the garage, and also out over the lane).  It was done in sections and involved hire of wood crane truck.  It took several days. The trunk was taken away and the remainder burned in our field.  The cost (April 2000) was 2,350 Euros.  Do ensure you have someone who is insured and who knows what they are doing.  PM me if you want the details of the people we used.
