1. just happened to me - very annoying
  2. If you want to check the business registration you can use this site https://www.infogreffe.fr/societes/ You can search by SIREN or name
  3.

I have , since getting a computer, been trying to use what I have gradually got to know to help the growing number of expats who are being badly served and over taxed by the chaotic french tax system.     I don't foresee retiring from that function any time soon.
Yippee ! Sue [:)]
Ditto - "like" [:D]

    Attestation
Thanks to all the replies so far, thanks Norman for the good wishes and Gardian we have been asked for 4 documents: carte d'identite, carte Vitale, carte de Mutuelle and attestation. I am still at a loss as to why some people have a date limit on their attestation and I don't, I am sure I am missing something here.
My attestation has a date limit on because I have always been employed on limited duration contracts so my rights to healthcare will expire at some point. As far as I know this is normal for employed/self-employed people. I would imagine that if you are registered using an S1 form, i.e. one that is associated with your UK state pension, then there would not need to be an expiry date.
  5. Having been one of the unlucky ones to have chosen the online insurer Ineas who went bust in 2010, we have not really been following the proceedings assuming that, being policy holders, we would be way down on the list for any repayment. BUT we have today received notification that we will be getting some money back [Www]
  6.
Thats a sensible procedure Tina and must add significantly to the overall cost as its effectively 3 lots of postage but I would think that it does work well. Please let us know of the results as I am considering trying varifocals again. in the meantime I will look at their site for single vision ones.
Glasses arrived during the week and friends are delighted with them. So much so that they want to order tinted lenses for the spare (free) frames they already have. The cost of 2 sets of tinted varifocal lenses - £140. For information, so far I have only paid one lot of postage of £3.95, but I assume there will be an additional cost of postage for the 2 sets of tinted lenses.
  7. It's a long time since I used this service but I do remember getting an email with the title "you've got funds" from Paypal. For your second question I think the answer is yes/yes - they only need your email address (the one associated with your paypal account) and yes, they will need a paypal account themselves.

    Storm

Thanks for the Best Wishes Norman..... As I normally lose fence panels when these big storms hit here in Dorset. I have just been out and roped the posts to trees this time !  Fingers crossed.....  at the moment its calm .
It's horrible here in southern Morbihan at the moment - we have strong gusting winds and driving rain. It is hard to believe all was calm and sunny here only yesterday afternoon. It blew a hooley overnight and seems set to do the same tonight. Sue
Same here in Normandy at the moment - all garden furniture safely stowed in the garage and everything else weighted down with oak and stone - fingers crossed as usual though. Having been through the '87 storm in London and the '99 storm in Normandy we are consciously in awe of the power of wind! Last night was very annoying - the wind rattling the shutters kept waking me up, as did the lack of wind and total silence which seemed to intersperse the gusts.
  9. Not directly France related but it may affect those people who are still UK tax resident but spend a lot of time in France (or other countries). There is a new Statutory Residence Test which will determine who is tax resident in the UK or not. . . http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/international/rdr3.pdf the rules are pretty explicit, if complex
  10.
Partial backtracking on the cards? http://www.midilibre.fr/2013/10/27/epargne-le-gouvernement-revoit-sa-copie-sur-les-prelevements-sociaux,775148.php
or almost total reversal? http://www.lefigaro.fr/politique/2013/10/27/01002-20131027ARTFIG00027-taxation-de-l-epargne-le-gouvernement-recule.php
  11. I'll give an update once the varifocals have arrived and been tried on. The latest email received estimates about 2 weeks for preparation and then delivery usually takes about a week.
  12. I am currently going through the process of obtaining varifocals online from Glasses2you for a friend and her mother. They have each been quoted 600 euros PLUS the cost of lenses, amounting to around 800 euros per pair of glasses. I ordered their selection of frames online and the total cost, including lenses and postage was £220 - for both pairs. The process of ensuring appropriate preparation of the glasses is they send out the frames with clear glass, you take a close-up photo and send it back for accurate measurements. They then send out the completed glasses with lenses. We have just sent back the photos so still have to wait and see if they are OK once made up. I should know within a couple of weeks whether this process is effective. I have bought several pairs of glasses from this online site (but only single vision) and been very impressed with the cost and service. The cost of glasses in France is, in my opinion, extortionate and must result in many people driving with defective vision, as so many people do not have the money to buy the glasses they need.
  13. Have a look through the recipes on this page http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/type/low_carb/ If you are concerned about fats, choose the ones with oil or reduce the amount of butter or cream. Also, if a recipe calls for cream cheese, etc. there are lower fat versions you can use and still keep the flavours.
  14.
You could always have a long weekend in Spain and pop into Spec Savers, well thats what we do.
or pop over to Jersey - depending on which is nearest [:)] I'm sure I read somewhere that there are some v.cheap foot passenger deals from St Malo in the run-up to Xmas
  15.
I've bought from Glasses2You and they were fast and inexpensive - plus you can upload your photo to their site to 'try on' various styles.
Agree, have had several pairs from them and been pleased with the quality and service. I am currently helping a French friend buy varifocals from them so will see how that goes.
  16.
Does anyone know what people eat with both problems please? I am finding it difficult to cook for a good friend. It was easy enough when they were only diabetic, but with the cholesterol thing it is far more complicated.
Try googling Dukan recipes - the diet is low carb (i.e. no sugar, ideal for diabetics) and low fat (which is regularly recommended for cholesterol problems)
  17. Just had the avis d'impot and the spreadsheet correctly predicted the amount due [:)]
  18. There is some clarification in this article http://www.challenges.fr/economie/20131007.CHA5281/titulaires-d-un-compte-paypal-vous-etes-surement-fraudeurs.html It seems the person prosecuted was a trader and used the paypal account for receiving payments for goods - which should have been declared. The article indicates that the declaration does not apply to individuals who pay for goods using paypal, or even use it to receive payment for items they sell, e.g. occasional things on eBay.
  19.
Thanks folk. Most of the work was done by OH but the electrics by a local entreprise. I thought CGT did not apply to one's main or only property in either country.  I'm pretty sure we didn't pay it on any of the 4 UK houses we lived in and sold (one after the other, obviously!)
If it is your only property in France but you rent it out, then it is not your principal residence, since one assumes you will be living somewhere else. The key to avoiding CGT in France is that it must be your principal residence, i.e. where you are actually living.
  20.
Make a gain?  Well of course we may not, so CGT wouldn't apply, but we bought the house in 2003 and replaced the grotty mismatched bathroom suite, adding a shower, put in a fitted kitchen and had the electrics done so we can hope!   That's if we can ever sell it of course.  It is a small 2 bedroomed village house so..... possibly easier to sell than a big expensive property.
If you had the work done by registered artisans then the cost of the works may be deductible from any gain. You would need to check with a Notaire to determine what is classed as "allowable costs".
  21.
but kneegel needs the one that shows the cover that was in place for 2012, as the tax people need to know about that year. It isn"t something for the future...
this raises an interesting conundrum regarding attestations . . . every one I have downloaded ore received in the post has contained the phrase " "Toute attestation de droits antérieure est à détruire" which I take to mean - destroy all previous attestations. However, it would appear that this is not sensible.
  22.
on another forum there is a member whose credit against his government pension has been reduced by 500 euros, so we are trying to find out if this is a one-off error. Apparently his accountant says there has been another change to the DTT but gives no details. Anyone heard of any DTT changes this year or have any similar experiences? As far as the spreadsheet is concerned I have been using my own from a couple of years back, updated to take account of some of the changes, but can't as yet comment on how it reflects my actual tax since I am caught in the situation I outlined where things have been delayed. I haven't heard of any changes this year to the DTT....are you sure that this isn't a question of the social charges being collected together with tax this year?..That could give the impression that the credit has been reduced, although I admit that most people won't be paying these.
Thanks Norman I think the inclusion of social charges is part of the problem, but there also seems to be some sort of confusion with a degrevement from 2012 - still trying to get my head round all the figures to make sense of the avis.
  23. The latest proposal is for 22 years in 2014, I believe. There is a good website here that has up to date articles and a simulator to allow you to estimate plus value http://www.leblogpatrimoine.com/impot/plus-value-immobiliere-une-exoneration-apres-22-ans-de-detention-en-2014.html you can register for email updates from the site which will have articles about any new changes
