1. What a great idea, lets take the lower working classes homes from them now.  After all, the jobs that they used to do have been sent to China, as our wonderful leaders in the UK have made it so that companies which used to employ them cant afford to manufacture here anymore. Must not spoil our green and pleasant land with factories must we.  I am sure that the houses they vacate can be put to good use for some poor immigrant families.
 2.

If the bulls won 99.9% of the time would anyone watch?
Well I would. There is nothing more I would enjoy than to see these gutless Spanish ( and that old English guy who is always on the news when this subject is mentioned)  bullfighters killed by the bulls. Sport is when competing opponents have an equal chance, so how this can be called "sport" I fail to see.
I can identify with that but for the rare occasions when the bull gets the upper hand you would have to see all the others, plus the bull would still be killed. .
The question Dog asked was "if the bull won 99.9% of the time would you watch". I would only have interest in watching if it was  bull "fighters" getting killed, hopefully a long drawn out death. [;-)]

 4.
I regret now using the metaphorical phrase 'brown envelope' .
I bet you do !!!! [;-)]
 5. PROPERTY TAX EVASION.   In this completely hypothetical scenario,  [;-)]   The seller advertises his property for say 100,000 Euros. The buyer offers less and a discount from the asking price of 23% is agreed. Half of the actual price is declared to the Notaire, in this case 38500 Euros. The rest is paid to the vendor in a brown paper envelope for "furniture". The Notarie fees are based on this figure of 38500 Euros. This happens with two more  property sales. I think even the most laid back notaire will spot a pattern emerging here. ( a house which had an asking price of 100,000 Euros sold for 38500) He ( the notarie) has lost money in his fees and the tax man has lost revenue. It is the notaires duty to report this if he has suspicions of wrong doing, as failure to do so could implicate him also in this fraud, from which he has not benefited, but has lost financially. Fraud on ones own is one thing, to conspire with another is far more serious, and so if found out, are the penalties.   Who also has lost out, well the agents who had spent time listing these properties, to see them sold for a fraction of their true value may be unhappy. The vendor who, desperate to sell, had no choice but to go along with a deal which was fully in the financial interest of the buyer, may not be too happy when they think about it. ( sold their main asset at a knock down price to a speculator, with cash who was trying to make even more by making them participate in their plan to defraud , or they would not buy) I could go on, but you get the picture. [:-))]
 6.

I've found that cash purchases can be quicker than the hassle of mortgages.
Absolutely, we have just bought three properties to rent out as our pension, we found them through agents and approached the sellers direct and offered 30% below the prices for cash. Actually got them for between 23 and 25% off in the end and paid half through the Notaire and the other half in brown envelopes. When they are sold it will be because we are dead so our daughter will have to pay any CGT but then what she never had she will never miss. Cash is King as they say. [:D]
I think if I had committed multiple offences which carried a custodial sentence ( conspiracy to defraud, tax evasion, etc etc), I would not be posting on an open forum about it.  [Www]
 7.
If its a symbol of oppression  (husband forcing wife to wear it) then it should be banned IMHO, but some reports indicate that sometimes its the choice of the women themselves who are often 'converts'  What's next -  are those employed by the French state allowed to wear a crucifix as jewellery ?
Is the forcing of ones wife to wear black stockings and suspenders against her will also a form of oppression???? [8-)]
 8.

Sorry for being a bit dim Braco - but I do not understand your post.  Thanks if you choose to enlighten me.
Hi Swissie My post was in response to comments comparing standards in some Muslim countries. I for one aspire to live in countries with far higher standards and freedoms. This latest law I see as a very retrograde step that was enacted purely to pander to the uneducated, insecure and bigoted - aka racists.
How lucky those uneducated bigoted French peasants are to have some one as educated as you moving to their country to show them just how ignorant they really are.
 9. One thing is for sure, this guy had balls. Not crying on some forum for him, or to some camp social worker, he sorted his problems in his way. Had he of course killed someone in a far off land who he had never met, because George or Tony had told him to, no doubt he would have been given a lump of metal to wear on his chest.
 10.
Its not the inquiry, but the questions that were being asked about the use of tasers. What were the police supposed to do?It seems to me they are damned if they do and damned if they don't.
There is always an investigation when the police murder a MOTP. But don't worry, after millions are spent paying some fat old ex top brass on the enquiry panel, the police will be found to have done an exemplary good job. [;-)]
 11.
Just heard from our French neighbours that there is to be a new land tax, does anyone know anything about this and does it apply to farm land or just large gardens?
As none of my land is "new", I guess this wont apply to me, all of mine is millions of years old. BTW, fully agree with your comments on Strasburg on another thread, why did it get deleted I wonder ???
 12.
Its in the DM as well today. Taxpayers millions funding Britons abroad who are 'too sick to work'
I see the money is "flooding in" for those claiming. A whole £91.40 a week after a year, hardly buy you a glass of Blue Nun at Annabelle's these days.[8-|] ----- Original Message -----
 13. As I have had to pay environmental charges to combat global warming, does anyone know where I send my application for payment from the government as its getting colder ????? [geek]
 14.
As Benjamin has said the 'partner' does not receive 'free' health care and I repeat why should they ? As I read it on balance his reply tends to support mine not contradict it. Sorry but I don't understand your 'clearly' point at all [8-)]
I guessed that maybe Loirette meant spouse, and your reply did not explore this possibility, Benjamin's did however.   This question was posted to try to get an answer for someone with health problems, and an answer that was indeed correct if the word "partner" is taken literally, had no one else  replied, may have made the poster think that they were not entitled to something which they are.   OK, not free healthcover, but a pretty good part of it.   The part of your reply which said "and why should they" made me think that you believed that for some reason that the partner/spouse/husband/wife should not also be entitled to any cover. I was at a loss to think why this may be?
 15.
Not that I am aware of and why should they ?
I trust you are aware of it now then. [I] Clearly as you have to ask "why should they ?" means you and your wife have the excellent fortune to be in good general health. [:)]
 16.
First time I've seen that one. However I've been sent the same picture, from Germany, France, Australia and US [:D] Good to see the Brits are catching up with the modern world.
My biggest surprise was it is such a large hole considering the small number of the team members involved. [geek]
 17.   AAADD- KNOW THE SYMPTOMS.....  Thank goodness there's a name for this disorder. Somehow I feel better, even though I have it!!  Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. -  Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.  This is how it manifests itself: I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing. As I head towards the garage, I notice post on the porch table that I picked up from the postman earlier. I decide to go through it before I wash the car. I put my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the recycling box under the table, and notice that the recycling box is full. So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the recycling first. But then I think,  since I'm going to be near the postbox when I take out the recycling paper anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take my cheque book off the table and notice that there is only one cheque left. My extra cheques are in the desk in my study,  so I go into the house to my desk where I find the cup of coffee I'd been drinking. I'm going to look for my cheques but first I need to push the coffee aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over. The coffee is getting cold, and I decide to make another cup.. As I head toward the kitchen with the cold coffee, a vase of flowers on the worktop catches my eye - the flowers need water. I put the coffee on the worktop and discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers.. I put the glasses back down on the worktop, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote control. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realise that tonight when we go to watch TV,I'll be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers. I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I put the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do. At the end of the day: The car isn't washed The bills aren't paid There is a cold cup of coffee sitting on the kitchen work-surface The flowers don't have enough water, There is still only 1 cheque in my cheque book, I can't find the remote, I can't find my glasses, And I don't remember what I did with the car keys. Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all bloody day and I'm really tired. I realise this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail..... Do me a favour. Forward this message to everyone you know, Because I can't remember who the hell I've sent it to. Don't laugh - if this isn't you yet, your day is coming!!
 18.     Today's Britain..... [Www]
 19.
Ebaynut, the idea that any government department of whichever hue would have moved that quickly is a little fanciful, I fear!
Possibly, but then they ( the new government) have been real quick to put many changes into place. It was Tony F's  post ( last one on page 68 of this thread) that makes its clear of the Conservatives correct stand on this issue, and shows how badly the past Labour government have treated people with a clear right to these payments. It would only take one call saying "pay them" from the right person.
 20. IMHO, Go for as many as you can afford. You can close the ones you don't need now, but can soon bring them into use if needed. Something you cant do if you don't have enough. Its better to have them and not need them, than to want them and not have them. Do you really wish to move again if its not big enough????  The cost of moving  again would out way the cost of getting the extra rooms. Good Luck. [:)]
 21. All this needed all along was a change of government in the UK. As soon as the Conservatives are back in charge, everything is being dealt with correctly.  Labour, the party of the people, indeed yes, their people. For any government to make a group who are on sickness benefits go through all this worry and work beggers belief, thank goodness Brown has finally gone forever.
 22.
I can let you have a hexi stove and an old rat pack, will that do? [:P]
I would prefer cash if you don't mind. (saves the postage costs) If you don't have the time to send it yourself, please forward your Bank details, PIN and DOB, mother's maiden etc, and I can arrange it all for you. No need to thank me, I am glad to help. [:-))]
 23.
edit. I am not poor - now !
Spare an old soldier a few pounds ( Euro's) for a cup of tea, please gov'nor????? [:)]
 24.

And I thought I was going to get absolutely torn to shreds[:)] PS I was privately educated, had private healthcare, and I have an abhorrance of inherited wealth, I've seen what it has done to some of my school friends. Money just let's you be miserable in much nicer places.
Being poor is not much fun - believe me.
Poor is a state of mind.  Skint is a temporary situation. [;-)]
 25.
Interesting, if predictable views on this thread. I firmly believe that, certainly in the UK, racism grew dramatically at the exact same time that legislation was introduced telling the populous that it was against the law to express anything that could be seen as racist. Has it worked, no, of course it hasn't, it just succeeded in turning a nation of very tolerant people into something much worse.
I think you are quite correct with this statement. Now we have, at long last a change of Government in the UK and the PC loony left have been kicked out, perhaps thing will change for the better. The new Government has made an excellent start, no ID cards, no second runway at Stansted and the scrapping this week of HIPS packs. Perhaps one day we in the UK will be able to call a spade a spade again!!!!!!
