1. As it's the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, it could have meant an unlicensed driver rather than a unlicensed vehicle perhaps.  Don't know the original context though. But then again, as the subject was Vehicle licensing terminology, probably not.
 2.
i will not use my wood burner because it smokes the house out, i use electric heaters and 2 jumpers, has anyone gone from wood to electric or gas, i want to remove my wood burner, its a silly thing
Have you tried to find out what's wrong with it before replacing it?
 3.
He told me never to use the word "Jew" as it is considered offensive.
Did he offer you an alternative that he found acceptable?  I don't think the phrase "of the Jewish faith" is really acceptable, Semitism is much more than a faith. Wish I could find the Thesaurus... Not even sure if Semitism is the right word.
 4. Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon or Marseille, haven't worked out the distances though.
 5.
Cannot see how anyone could classify a DVD player as a televison receiver. It's no closer to a TV than and old fashioned record player is to a radio. rgds hagar
That's exactly the point, but a DVD player is undeniably an audiovisual device though.
 6.
Scrap the TV, use a computer with a DVD drive. You don't need a licence for a computer.....yet
You might find people who would disagree with that statement if the computer is used to display DVDs.  Don't forget that in France it is not a 'Television Licence' as such, but a Redevance Audiovisuelle, and is payable by the occupier of a residence with a television receiver or a comparable device.
 7.
... I would also like to know where it went last time it was serviced...
Sent you a PM.
 8. That must be the Advanced course...
 9.
... If you read the sales brochures of say Jotul, no where does it say not to burn pine...
But Tom, if the manufacturer of the particular stove in use writes "Do not use resinous woods (pine, fir, spruce, etc.) which involve more frequent maintenance of the stove and the flue." then that's good enough for me.  Having seen a nearby house destroyed following a fire in the flue it is not a risk I would take myself.
 10.
... My friends told me their dogs scratched their new glass door within days...
Are you saying that a dog's claws can scratch glass?  I am not convinced.  A wooden or plastic frame perhaps, but surely not the glass itself.
 11. Two very different approaches to the Customer Service concept there Frenchie  [:D]
 12. Several times over the last few days I have changed from Yes to No at the prompt "Enable Email Notifications of replies to your posts" but still they keep coming. Also I have changed Receive emails from Yes to No but it keeps reverting. How do I stop reply notifications please?
 13. We supplied long certificates to CPAM which were accepted, but then came a request for a translation of one of them (not both).  When we queried it we were told that someone had made a mistake and that the language itself was not the problem, just that they could not read the handwriting on the certificate.  I provided my own typewritten translation which was accepted. Might be a good idea to type out the details and pin them to the certificates you submit.
 14.
I use pee on my compost all the time. Can't  pee into it though...
Me too, need a stepladder for that.
 15.

Leaving aside the humorous bit, does this mean that the German police can't take action on the evidence of the registration plate alone? That would surprise me.
Just checked with a German colleague and he says that's right, there must be a clear picture of the driver.  He was quite surprised at the article though as he says the speeding pictures always show both the driver and passenger. Just maybe this whole thing is a wind-up ?
That's what I thought.  Obviously someone has photoshopped the number plate, but unless the driver was hiding behind a fancy mask, someone has also swirled what was presumably an adequate picture of the driver's face.  Perhaps it would have been better without the sun flare in the bottom corner of the windscreen, and the rear view mirror won't have helped, but any self respecting police force should have been able to enhance and recover a usable photo. Edit>  They've also done a swirl on the left hand side of the vehicle.  I wonder why?  [8-)]           Could it have been this chap do you think?
 16. Don't recall seeing any around here Jill, the retroreflective paint is not very good either (even where it's not worn out).
 17. If the Germans can't tell a TT from an A4 estate perhaps they really do need a photo too.
 18. That sort of thing has always worried me when overtaking European lorries in the UK, or UK lorries in France. Can any lorry driver out there tell us roughly how big the blind spot is? (I'm guessing at least the front third to half of the vehicle depending on how well the mirrors are adjusted). Apart from overtaking as quickly as possible (minimising the time at risk) any other tips?
 19. or the "loi d'emmerdement maximum" as a frenchman explained it to me the other day.
 20.

...Nation states have a duty of care towards it's citizens...
And that, of course, is the nub of the problem.  Once someone has chosen to leave their home country, he or she is no longer a citizen of it.
Not sure what you mean by that Cathy.  My passport still shows me as a British Citizen,  will that change to a different category when I renew it?
 21. "... and keep all the receipts to send off to the tax office next year for your credit d'impĂ´t" But remember that the model you choose will have to have the Flamme Verte logo to qualify for the tax credit.
