  1. And there I was thinking about a taxfree mustang convertible bought direct from our US cousins ....... cheap as well.  It does take a while to kill flowers held against the exhaust.
  2. Biggest problem is do not register a car, that is less than 6 months old and 6000 km if you have paid taxes on it in UK, 'cos you will be charged TVA in France.  Hence my Grand Scenic was 6 mths 3 days old and in excess of 6000 km - Lady at Melle Tax Office had a good chk then recheck of age (using her fingers)!!
  3. Yes, I nearly did the same with my R1200RT when distracted .... owning a diesel car can be habit forming!!
  4. What a heating engineer? - no offense to heating engineers.  My own engineering knowledge is limited to aero piston and jet - before I started flying so again I can only comment on my own observations with our Scenic and what is readily available on the internat.  Nice bluff but you or your friend are talking out of the proverbial.  Next you will explain that you are talking about carbs not injection!  Never mind the legalities of prolonged coasting in neutral. From one of many forums: I have confirmed to my satisfaction that the answer to my original question is, Yes, modern computer-controlled fuel injection will stop injecting fuel while coasting in gear, as the wheels will turn the engine and all of the accessory belts. I am glad I asked, because this was news to me. I presented this same question over at a Consumer Reports forum, and their staff expert said: "We have fuel meters that are tapped into the lines to read actual fuel consumption. Coasting in gear uses no fuel to speak of. Coasting in neutral still requires fuel to keep the engine running. The most efficient way is to come to a stop in gear for as long as possible and coast down hill in gear." [emphasis mine] Any time you are engine braking, you are using no fuel to speak of. If you have a Consumer Reports membership, you can view that thread here: http://dis...r-38aujohn Post numbers 2 and 8 were the most informative. By the way, no part of my consideration of this question involves turning off the engine at any time.
  5. Dog, There is no telling you is there?  Well try this bone.  Find a Renault Scenic II, such as our 2.0 Dci, that has a fuel flow indicator - try the 2 methods which I have - then report back.  It is basic engineering and it is well documented on the internet. I am sure you will gnaw away - your original argument was decelerating.
  6. Foot off accelerator - high gear and ....? Certainly cheaper than new pads and discs.  ''Your Honour, I was not in control of the vehicle cos I thought, wrongly, that out of gear was cheaper ......''
  7. Actually rolling, with a modern engine, burns more fuel than decelerating with the engine in gear - do a web search to check the facts.
  8. Did 180K on my R1200RT last week up into the mountains before dropping down to Sorrento - Amalfi - home.  Heated seat and handlesbars are bliss.
  9. Some locals p** in a bottle and spread it around the area you want to protect.  Renewing the scent every week/10 days.  Personally I think it is taking the p***!
  10. Try looking up ''rebooting LNB'' or something similar.  I have had this problem with the LNB freezing.  You need to go to another freq, give it a kick then return to your selected freq.  I am using southern beam in Naples.
  11. Going past Cassino into the mountains is pretty impressive but then for a slow drive ... the Amalfi, going north from Sorrento.  Only on a motorbike.
  12. I have been working in the UK and elsewhere for the 4 years that my family have been in France.  Put in a tax return every year - dual taxation and have not yet owed cash to France.  UK pays health for family in France.  Would prefer to contribute to french tax direct but work for UK Gov. You work in c***py areas for acceptable recompense - I have been to same areas and worked alongside contractors.  If family was with you surely company picks up tab so ''perhaps'' they will do the same for family staying in France - after all they are saving a fortune not having schools, healthcare and housing.  If you are contracted then I presume company has paid market value for your services so you will need to spend some of the cash to contribute to your adopted country.  After all nobody wants to sponge off the state do they?
  13. In word or OpenOffice[6] you could go into characters special and select your own shortcut.
  14. In  Naples area the driving is mad (insert scary?) however they generally have good awareness of bikes.  I have a daily commute of some 16 miles each way around the Naples basin.  After 3 months I hope it has honed my sense of self-preservation to new heights!! Now where is that piece of wood? Again here the drivers will leave a sliver between the centre reservation and themselves for bikes and, even on motorway, 2 lanes very quickly becomes 5 and don't talk about when it rains!!  Mind, 3 months with 35C until last week is bearable with the right kit
  15. Robin Veeery droll.  Brought a smile to my face.  Tis a shame tho when you do get neighbours from hell.
  16. Hi SD, I have bought a taxfree Renault Scenic in Italy.  Looking to matriculate in November via Melle Tax Office - unfortunately the lady in Melle Tax Office says that we must pay our taxes somewhere, she acknowledges that I am in NATO but says it makes no difference.  Is there any particular legislation, in french would be handy, I can gently cuff her around the ears with - others have said she obstructs rather than helps.   The alternative is to import it to the UK, sell it to my sister for a day and then buy it back with a sale invoice - I would rather not go thru that nonsense!! Thank you in anticipation Vern
  17. Not just children.  There is an aviation reporting point off Brittany with the same name!!
  18. In that case, not having mentioned 2 yr extension before, I would hope that Renault would have been rather more generous.  Was it 4 yrs and 100,000 km warranty?
  19. Good result.  I think that the offer, for France, was a reasonable one considering the distance and age.  We are looking at a Kia Ceed for our second car 'cos it comes with a 7 year warranty.  If the vehicle has a 2 year warranty it means exactly that - did you not have the option of increasing your warranty period? - we do with our Grand Scenic.  You can increase the warranty period, at a cost, anytime up to the 2 years.
  20. Chilling on his motorbike, listening to his music whilst PTTing his mates.  Have a look on motorrad.fr and see what radio/helmet options BMW offer that should answer your question.
  21. We have the following Garmins: 2610 - discontinued but excellent BMW Nav III - Garmin 2720 for motorbikes.  Excellent. Our new acquisition is a Nuvi 760.  Delighted with, lots of useful bells and whistles pse see Garmin site, however the only downside is that you used to get the mapsource cd with the unit which then allowed you to update your other units with the new mapping - this is no longer the case.
  22. Spain has insisted on 2 jackets to be carried for the last 5 years - they do check.  It is a very good idea and should be implemented throughout europe soonest and enforced e.g. you get pulled over for speeding they check all your equipment - bulbs, warning triangle and vests - are present.  Some countries also insist on fire extinquishers.  You read accounts number of folks needlessly killed at the side of roads - I know some of it is broken down cars being rear ended by tired (or asleep) truck drivers but these measures hopefully will cut down the numbers.
  23. I have had no problems.  Running Firefox  and Avast . reagrds Vern
  24. I have just bought 3 Trailer tyres for my Iforwilliams from Allopneus - great saving and they arrived after 2 days.  Local garage fitted them for 6.5 euros each.
