  1. Don't knock it Isabel lived in Oz for over 20 years and claims massive Diggers are only in the Antipodeans imagination
  2. Perhaps it would more be useful if you posted something helpful for somebody hopeing to move to Europe, or if you can recommend an better site than Americans in Toulouse for those who retiring or working outside the aerospatial industry.
  3. Link below to French Embassy in Washington which has good details. American in Toulouse also long established and very useful information for anybody from USA. Not sure how easy it would be for you to do but if I had time I would think about obtaining a driver’s license from a US state such as Louisiana which allows the French Government allows you to swop for a French license. http://ambafrance-us.org/spip.php?rubrique=2 http://www.americansintoulouse.com/index.php
  4. If it were me I would try a two wire twisted pair connection from the connector at 200 metres to the house. If that cures the problem then say you have found the fault inside the house and no longer need the survey. Every French domestiv telephone connection I have seen has only been two wires into the house.
  5. If you tile too tight then when the tiles expand they can crack against each other.
  6. Search on 'raccord cuivre' using Google.fr but as a start : http://www.plomberie-pro.com/Catalogue/raccord-cuivre/raccord-a-compression-olive.htm 20/27 corresponds to the fittings which are 3/4 inch
  7. While the Irish republic was running the 'inspercia' funded by EU money they just about had the population balance to make it work however when the turned down an EU subvention as not enough they lost the momentum required. It is the only place I have ever been to and thought the population looks young.
  8. If you insured via a local office try getting the boss there to lean on AXA
  9. Explanation and European part number for the Bosch router : http://buildyourguitar.com/resources/productreviews//bosch-router/index.htm
  10. As they have issued a certificate of insurance you are covered.
  11. If the insurance is with a French based insurance company then normally the policy is automatically renewed unless you send a letter cancelling it.
  12. Yes you do have a Sky box. Read through the link. http://notonyourtelly.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2461 Forced download instructions as below http://www.satelliteonline.co.uk/forced_downloads.htm NB would not normally recommend this but I think you are stuck
  13. My French must be finally be improving understood the story on the car radio this afternoon.
  14. In London I had brilliant results using the almost circular design shown in the lowest link. DIY design is covered in the first two links. I would favour low and outside versus high and in the roof space. http://www.electronics-radio.com/articles/radio/antennas/dipole/fm-dipole-antenna.php http://www.transmissionzero.co.uk/radio/marts-fm-radio-antenna/ http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page11e.htm#list
  15. In passing offering by sending a cheques for say £ 800 for an invoice for £ 1,000 about which there is a dispute and relying on cashing the cheque as exceptance of the offer failed to work about 30 years ago in the UK and I suspect does not work under French or European law. I cannot remember chapter and verse but was when I still read the law reports in the FT everyday.
  16. Freeview (UK terrestrial digital televisition) and TNT are identical so a UK box will work in France. TV should be OK. Edit - Only question a small number of very early UK and French boxes did not have  enough memory to cope with the full list of channels - Still worth packing IMHO.
  17. Around us - NE corner of Gironde there are restrictions on the maximum you can buy was € 50 now € 30 but no closed filing stations. I driving to UK on Friday but will try and fill up at tank half full rather than three quarters full on way up and will drop crusing speed to 60 mph 100 kph as car will reach Calais if there are shortages.
  18. The second posting related to the colo(u)r coding on the video posted which were not the same as the cables I recently purchased in France . I thought that latest/current rules needed in each main room both : an 8 wire socket for telephone plus a second 8 wire socket for computer / TV all the way back to what I know as a patch panel. I have not purchased the updated L'instalation Electrique as the requirements for telecoms and disabled access were not integrated into the book as a whole but were a 16 page section at the end without either entries in the index or revisions to the book as a whole.
  19. In France they kiss on main stream l'amour baby not cheap displays (Joni Mitchel). The colo(u)r codes on the wiring does not match the cables I purchased in August and October this year
  20. The BBC did a fairly heavy shuffle of frequencies yesterday which meant a full software download. I suspect this has meant a check that your box still connected to a 'phone line. Hence current problems - no idea of solution
  21. What are your objectives for the wiring ?
  22. If it is bad in winter as well as summer I would instal some air cionditioning.
  23. There should be an arrangement on the fuel tank to drain water leaving the fuel intact. Only one cold start and cruising at under 60 MPH / 100 KPH plus never touching the brakes should enable you to beat te range on the onboard PC
  24. Centre of Economic interest is used to attempt to tax the owners of French business and property who using nominee shareholdings via for instance Zug (Switzerland) or the Dutch Antilles etc , who try to escape both French Income Tax and Wealth Tax.
  25. Versus UK distances are longer, parts of France close to Spain or Belgium seem to have more competitive new car  pricing as people can and do cross the border to buy.  The French do not have a culture of expensive company cars so small engine, non air con, fully unloaded cars are much more common than the UK. Costs  of registration on change of owner are higher in France but unless the car is very polluting annual road tax does not apply. These costs halve at ten years so some French keep their cars for ten years then sell.  As in the UK in general second hand car prices are cheaper in prosperous parts of France.  Many garages sell cars on consignment, they do not own the car and you pay the current owner rather than the garage. It is possible to negotiate on price but in my experience far harder than the UK. Against this the Cartel of closed auctions for second hand cars and price support to produce lower lifetime  costs of ownership does not seem as common in France. Around us you often see good value second hand cars simply advertised parked on land with an AV sign in the window. Cheap spare parts are limited, there is no equivalent of GSF, against this Peugeot, Citroën and Renault consumables are fairly cheap from either Hypermarkets or the Halfords equivalents such a Feur Verte Max Auto on the Centre Commercial.   If I was buying anything than was not PCG or Renault I would look long and hard at the distance to the agents or a garage locally that would have the diagnostics for the car.
