Knighthoods

I certainly don't think rowing is easy, too many early winter mornings seeing them practising on a cold misty river at the crack of dawn !(while I am snugly in the car)

Sir Stephen Redgrave first learnt to row courtesy of Great Marlow comprehensive school - how many schools, apart from public ones, offer rowing as an option, during or out of school hours?

I think the speed in which football folk received honours might be to do with which ever shade of politician was in power (but I haven't looked it up to see)

I think most people respect these achievements whether they have a title or not.

Frankly I have less time for some civil servants who get a gong for doing their job and getting a decent pension at the end of it - but on the other hand its nice to reward or acknowledge people who go the 'extra mile'

Do the French have a system of this type of recognition ?

The sad thing about these honours is that good people will always be ignored and others who don't deserve an honour get one, sometimes due to political bent. There are so many different opinions and how often do we really know how much someone has contributed.

If I were for instance an Anfield legend such as Kenny Dalglish, I don't think I woule need or want an honour from the state. The honour would be to have lived a dream and been well paid for doing so. So many sportsman get honours some greater than others - I think the adulation of the fans is honour enough.

People who take on years of selfless struggle to better the lifes of those less fortunate really do deserve a public honour - a way of saying thank you!

Do you think Sir Clive Woodward will be handing his back now he has decided to resign. A mark of greatness would be to go on with a new squad and prove he was worth the honour by winning the world cup again.

Finally, whoever mentioned Bob Paisley earlier, good on you. Many Liverpool fans hold him higher than the great Bill Shankly. True true gentleman but fiercely competetive and successful - SIR ALEX F****SON eat your heart out you have a lot to learn!!

In a previous life I took part in a campaign to get the long-serving secretary of a certain organisation recognised in the honours system. We didn't do this out of support for the system - rather to prevent a gong going to the chairman, who had been pretty useless but made no secret that he expected an OBE to mark his retirement. It worked - our man got an MBE, in his case totally deserved, and the chairman got sod all.

It just shows that it depends on who you know and how much noise you make rather than whether you deserve recognition. Although most of the sporting and entertainment gongs seem to be to please the general public rather than a real acknowledgement of achievement.

I hear (Sir) Clive Woodward is going to join the currently-lacking-direction Southampton FC, so perhaps he'll get the chance to re-invent himself in a different field with regular-shaped balls. I hope he won't mind me mentioning this, but an Englishman we know living near to us shares the same name, and during the Rugby World Cup he got loads of phone calls from Frenchmen talking about the England squad. Nothing to do with knighthoods but I suppose it shows that, at least in Normandy, the French were on our side for once.

takes me back to school days and 'liberty bodices'...Showing my age now :-(  Quote

God Gay, the ones with rubber buttons? My Mum used to boil mine, and the rubber buttons always cracked and shrunk.  I was the last girl in the class to wear a bra, (says she who is now 40D) so  sports lessons were a misery for me, having to change in front of the others.

Sal - Southampton?  I grew up at Calshot (RAF station), and went to school at Hardley.  Know it by chance?

No, but it does stop you faling flat on your face ! LOL

The liberty bodices I had were white with sort of fluffy insides. Had to be worn over a creamy vest, which was longer in length often viyella or Ladybird (before it belonged to Woolworths)I think I was allowed to stop wearing them when I was about 8.......

I've been following this thread with great interest. Without quoting, I think the forum guide to users tells us not to respond to postings which are abusive or inflammatory. For that reason, and time restraints I havn't.

Reading back through all the posts, there are some messages that are clearly racist, the first of which, before time restraints stopped me spending the neccessary time on the forum, I objected to in very restrained tones. As the thread continued more racist remarks were made, to which Miki, and particularly Dicksmith responded vigourously.

I wish I had supported their arguments at the time. I won't hesitate in the future, as none of the clearly racist posts were pulled.

Buying shoes was almost guaranteed to cause a row with my mother (quote)

At the risk of being told off for hyjacking the thread, that brings back memories.  I always had to have sensible Clarke's shoes with buckles, while at one time, my best friend had fancy red "slip ons", I was only 9 at the time.

Thank you Gay (Russethouse), but as I said I had no time to make any posts, to forum admin or otherwise.

I note that at least one moderator, Will The Conquerer, had joined in a less contentive part of the thread at page 11. Do you have to receive a complaint from one of the members before you act, or can you choose to act yourselves?
Having read all this, with some amusement, it has to be said that as long as your argument is left wing and PC, you are OK on this Forum (sits back and waits for left wing abuse!!) Martyn Ps sorry M...
No nothing surprises me with you, once a cr**p always a...................

This has nothing to do with left wing, it's about having a social conscience, remember what that is ? I doubt it very much.

You so predicably and pathetically, even had to put left wing in front of a posting about Vanessa Redgrave. She was a person who got it wrong in most peoples eyes and her name was sufficient enough to quote but as usual, idiots like you have to bring politics in to this terrible and extremely sad case in Russia,  where political posturing should be left a million miles back and remain there.

You should have put sits back and rightly expects a reply  (or better still said nothing) and why not, it deserved to be left alone but you couldn't resist it because that is how sl**y you really are.

I thought things had calmed down and people seen some sense after my earlier blast at the racist and political ranting last week. Obviously some people cannot leave well alone and are bored on a Sunday evening and want to stir things up. I give up.

Jirac,

Some people are just like that and try to pretend otherwise, it should have been allowed to rest but...........don't give up, it only encourages idiots to post more.

You are having a larf, trained by Zanu ! that was the name of the group he formed himself after departing Nkokomo's lot (Zapu, who of course, he helped from also) and, who in the end Mugabe attacked after initially forming a coalition with them.

He hasn't been a military man to my knowledge nor trained by anyone either. He is though carrying on what methods Smithy built but in reverse, both of them terribly wrong and how.

So what end of the sofa do you write your posts, if you don't sit in an armchair then?

By the way Admin, thanks for the spellchecker, all you need now is to train people to push the right buttons!
