Parkinson's

Very sorry to hear that John.

There are associations to help if your French is up to a local one

http://www.franceparkinson.fr/

It may seem silly to suggest that extra stress, but the local side might help with any hand-on help needed.

This part is particularly useful as it covers your rights and any help you are entitled to in France

http://www.franceparkinson.fr/docs/vos-droits.php

It is an ALD so you will be covered at 100%, but you have to ask your médecin traitant to get it registered with the local medical authorities.

You may also be able to get the status of being recognised as handicapped and so get further help

This page covers some practical issues. Again, it is in French but you are likely to need the vocabulary

http://www.franceparkinson.fr/docs/conseils-pratiques.php?p=68

http://www.franceparkinson.fr/docs/documents-et-liens-utiles.php is a list of relevent sites

You already have my email so please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions about how this is dealt with here.

I am sure other posters may well have more direct experience of the illness itself...

Good info Norman.

We had a neighbour who was diagnosed with Parkinsons a few years ago, a woman in her late 50s. She was well cared for in the french system, and her symptoms were held in check for some years by medication. I used to see her several times a week and she never seemed any worse. Eventually she returned to the UK so don't know how she's doing now.

So it seems that modern medicine can control the development of the disease with some people.

She managed to get financial help too, for everyday living.

Good luck from me too!

Thanks for all your kind support and for the details Norman

Its the obvious phyical signs of the uncontrolled shaking that reminds you that you have it and that gets under your skin

I've started on medication but its not kicked in yet, at least with the shaking

I'll post how I get on

Thanks again

John

Yes, I think the French deal with Parkinson's well - we have a french friend with it - he seemed to improve a couple of years ago when he was put onto some new treatment ... and the tremors are hardly noticable now .. though I know he also upped his exercise and they can be seen walking almost every day - they are fitter than I am for walking ...

So with luck the medication will soon have you feeling much better.
