To read PDF files is free.  To create them, afaik, you need to purchase the Adobe software.  You probably have Adobe reader and if so this should give you a link to the website.  Right click on your Adobe icon. 

EDIT : In fact having done this myself just this minute, I see that there is a free trial version so you should be able to do this quite easily and for nothing.  See :

download PDF creator which is free and you can create PDFs from any office document by selecting PDF creator as the printer and then print. It then converts and saves the doc as a PDF

there is also a good free PDF reader  called Foxit reader - much simpler than Adobe

I found a free programme called 'doPDF' - only 3mb; downloaded and installed this on my friend's computer and it worked just fine. A note of caution, when it installs, it makes itself the default printer but you can easily change this after.
