I have never really been sure what an espresso actually is (same with all the other obscure coffee names), but if you mean a small strong black coffee, which around here I would simply ask for un café, then if I wanted extra hot water, I ask for un (café) allongé.

Espresso is coffee made by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee beans, under pressure. It takes less water to get the full flavour out of the coffee beans, so the resulting drink is smaller and stronger.  You taste different 'notes' in espresso coffee (compared to filter or cafetiere coffee) because of the fine grind and the pressure extraction.
