  1. Correctl Defragging is only for conventional rotating hard drives, not solid state devices.
  2. I know (knew) the area quite well having moved there from Medway, Kent in '87 because it was such a "dump". Loved my little harbourside new build at Baiter, Poole and got into sailing proper from there.  Avoided Bournemouth generally apart from enjoying the foreign students sunbathing topless near the pier in summer.  A young friend told me the rot was setting in because too many scouse drug dealers were making it their winter digs.  The UK wouldn't be my first choice unless I had enough money to live somewhere "upmarket" and safe, if that sort of place still exists.  I am not so sure since noticing that average house prices being quoted at £350k plus.
  3. I have no need to go that far for excellent dentistry.  My brilliant Romanian dentist is five minutes drive away.  [:)]
  4. People that think nuclear is the answer conveniently diregard the risks involved.  The most recent incident at Fukushima in Japan has ended up polluting most of the north Pacific and radioactive fish are being caught off the west coast of America.  Mainstream media have dropped this issue in favour of Islamic terrorists, Trump, and whichever celeb has the biggest boobs this week.   Of course its not just when things go wrong that the risks are there.  How about the road and rail transport of fuel rods to the sites and the road and rail transport of spent fuel to where it is processed (in Cumbria) and then to where it is buried?  Dozens of opportunities for environmental disasters of epic proportion.  Then when a site is decommissioned you can't go near it for up to 100 years.  As mentioned above, the answer may lie in a combination of methods, including solar.  Or will the poor birds fly into the panels and kill themselves?  If we continue to use more and more energy then it has to come from somewhere.  If you affluent lot must have your holidays abroad using cheap flights in aircraft that burn fossil fuel by the ton then you will just have to grin and bear the guilt.
  5. Now that you mention it, I think it was Parsnips that posted a detailed explanation of how to fill the forms in a couple of years ago.  Ever since then I have just filled in the same boxes every year.  The last time it changed in a minor way Parsnips clarified it for all.  I know people with lots of pensions and investments, etc. can have a pretty complicated time of it but happilly(?) I only have one basic UK state pension to declare and no savings so hopefully it will be simple.
  6. You are so right.  I have never seen such a biased set of questions in my life.   I suspect it is only a not-so-subtle method of generating a mailing list.
  7. I have been asking the same question about the new form on other forums.  The only replies bang on about doing it online instead.  Not helpful.  I don't understand French well enough and one misplaced click could end in tears.  [:(]
  8. And the goings on in Syria are just the latest in the planned long-term destabilisation of the whole region by the USA.  The forces trying to oust the democratically elected government are being funded by the CIA, etc.  The whole thing stinks even more because the thousands of refugees will be a major burden on Europe and not the USA.
  9. I don't feel any need to explain why I don't want to buy something from a cold caller.  I answer with "Hello?"   That quite often does the trick.  The last time someone started in with the pitch in French I replied "If you want to sell me something I don't want you'll have to try it in English".  I have no respect for these time wasters so tend to take no prisoners.
  10. If I had a potfull in the UK I would probably move some now before it goes any lower but sadly I can only move the cash when the pension is paid in every four weeks.  No nestegg available to play the market with.  Of course the rich play the game both ways and get money without breaking a sweat.
  11. On the surface it does seem like the French authorities are simply unable to think outside the box and want us all to drive the same limited range of boring clonemobiles but somehow some interesting stuff does seem to slip in.  I have been looking at the FFVE website and was wondering if that is a way to get something nice.   In fact on one of their pages beach buggies are mentioned.  There are lots of  v8 powered rods and customs on the FSRA website that appear to be on French plates so there must be a loophole somewhere.
  12. And there's some new Transatlantic Trade Agreement (or some such name) that the Americans are bulldozing the nitwits in Brussels to sign (behind closed doors by the way).  Lots of things in it that sound beneficial but it also sneaks in some things that are clearly biased in favour of the good ol' US of A.  Like European nations will not be allowed to state on labels that the food contains GM ingredients.  They know the general public are getting wise to the dangers and want the wool pulled over our eyes making it impossible to know what we are eating.  They have already managed to restrict labelling in several US states and now they have targetted us as well.  Apart from the GM issue this agreement in essence removes individual nations' rights to restrict any products coming into their own country for any reason.
  13. Selfish attitudes?  Realistic is much nearer the mark.  As stated above there is absolutely nothing anyone on this thread or anywhere else can do to reverse the trend.  The 1 percent of the world's population that have the money and influence to make the changes necessary are not willing to give up their own personal agendas.  They may well offer up "cleaner" alternatives but those will have more to do with generating short term profit for the makers than long term benefits for the rest of humanity than haven't the cash to buy them.
  14. And unless it affects the taxation on a new car heavily I doubt if many other people bother either. The ones that make the most "fashionable" comments about emissions probably fly to their holidays in the sun on planes that burn fuel by the ton and fill their trolley with food from abroad flown in for their convenience.
  15. Whos is actually concerned with the emissions figures anyway?  I don't know anyone who would be bothered either way.  Manufacturers of just about everything tell lies about their products.
  16. Some of Andy's solutions have been used for many decades in Brittany, where rainfall could well exceed that of Somerset.  The tree planting and retention of hedgerows with smaller fields combined with meticulous and regular tending of roadside ditches and runoffs seems to work very well indeed.  I suspect the original intention was to reduce erosion of precious topsoil but a happy side effect is that these methods help to divert the excess rainfall back into the water table.
  17. You're not old if you can remember where you've been.  [:)]
  18. Worry not.  It'll all be over in less than a week.
  19. "I hesitate to buy online in France because of the not-knowing whether it will work or not, and the difficulty of redress if things go wrong." I buy very little more than food and fuel from shops in France for the exact same reason.  I buy as much as possible online...........from UK, China, Germany, and occasionally from France.
  20. Correct. If/when the UK decides to come out of the EU the referendum results will be fiddled to bring the desired outcome of the bods at the top who pull the strings.  I don't hold out any hopes for democracy having any part in the proceedings.
  21. Late model cars being supplied with no spare?  One more reason I will never waste my money on one.
  22. Good Luck!  And thanks for all the help based on facts, not hearsay.
  23. Thanks for taking the trouble to let us know of a bargain at Noz.  Now can you let us know which branch?  They all tend to keep differnent stock.
