1.
Still I hope the gate girl got the sack as it was my 14 year old daughter she picked on to put her case in the measuring basket!!
That's a bit harsh isn't it?
 2. Interesting article in Marianne Norman H.  Loved the comments on the DT's report! Meanwhile, I see Mme Royal has now arrived in Guadeloupe to "assist" (ie self publicise) in the obseques of the unfortunate victim of last tuesday. And that the leader of the LKP has stated that M. Sarkozy "hears but doesn't respond".
 3.
There is also the 'Pompiers' but they have a similar requirement of nationality.
Although they could always become a Volunteer Pompier, the only Nationality requirement is to be an EU citizen, resident permanently in France.[:D]
 4. I was trying to find some references, and found some good info here.  There are some good additional articles on the same subject at the bottom.
 5. I am pleased to see the return of peaceful protest, the first night without violence, and the return to the negociating table by the LKP.[:)] Last nights speech on the Antilles by M. Le Président seems to be reasonably well welcomed, if lacking in specifics.
 6. Not to mention the saving in policing costs[I]
 7.
We paid the tax for the first year but were told the bills just get sent out to you when it's time for renewal.  I must say we didn't even think about it and it wasn't until we moved back and got a letter saying we owed X much that we realised we never had a bill.
If talking about house taxes (foncière/habitation), they may have been sent to your previous UK address?
 8.
His name is an anagram of 'Over Lax Tier' .
Tax or revile?
 9.
I am told that there are now Fawlty Towers weekends where you could stay in a hotel and be insulted by a Basil Fawlty lookalike.
Do many Germans go?[6]
 10.
Guadeloupe protesters turn on white families as man is shot dead
Ref the alleged comments by one person in this report, really unhelpful (to say the least), especially when extremists take over. I have French friends who have moved from the village I live in to Martinique.  I had heard on the grapevine that they were moving back (before the troubles there started), but haven't seen them here yet.  I do hope they are/ will be all right.[:(] PS Just to clarify, I do hope there is an entirely peaceful resolution to the problems in the Antilles, without ANY further loss of life (or even injury).
 11. Unfortunately BJSLIV confused me (easily done) with this
Try clicking on Le Journal de 13H. New window opens then page down there  to find the map.
instead of saying Le Site du 13H. Each time I just ran the video of the 13H edition. Thanks to Clair, I have it now!
 12.

Try clicking on Le Journal de 13H. New window opens then page down there  to find the map.
That worked for me.
Not me!
 13. I'm with judith on this one, no matter what I do I do not fnd a map of the regions[8-)]
 14. Last night I made a point of watching the BBC 10 o'clock news....not a mention.  Meanwhile it was still understandably the top item on 20 heures on TF1, only interuppted by the speech (on the Economy) of M. Le Président.  He said at the end he would be making a similar speech today about the situation in the Outres-Mers. I note that this morning, M. Fillon announced an increase in the basic salaries, perhaps this came out of the now daily meeting on the subject?
 15.
.....unless the Gendarmes tell you you have to in order to  get points taken off it, or there are age advantages in changing , ie you are approaching 70??
Or your UK photo licence is due to expire?
 16. I see the situation is getting nastier there now.[:(] http://actualite.aol.fr/guadeloupe-violentes-echauffourees-a-baie-mahault/article/20090218002156172505407 How long before it get this bad in Martinique?
 17.
- none of which you tell us about in your post.
Perhaps they're suffering from..........writersblock[:-))]
 18.
Espresso is coffee made by forcing hot water through finely ground coffee beans, under pressure.
Un café then, thanks Âme.
 19.
My question is can I easily buy bags of logs and kindling from supermarkets/ petrol stations etc as I can in UK?
You can get them in some petrol stations, but at probably twice the price you would pay elsewhere[:(]
 20.
[Not actually a double espresso but an espresso with a equal quantity of hot water added to it.  .....I have never heard the expression either, but the description would match what I would call un américain / américano (an expresso with added hot water).
I have never really been sure what an espresso actually is (same with all the other obscure coffee names), but if you mean a small strong black coffee, which around here I would simply ask for un café, then if I wanted extra hot water, I ask for un (café) allongé.
 21.
But maybe this is the whole point: unless you are actively living in France, i.e., working in a French environment,  interacting continuously with French people, then you don't necessarily know (or want to know) what is happening around you, especially if you are not at ease with the language.
IMVHO, I would have thought this would have been a very good reason to watch French news and find out what is going on, i.e. to improve your language skills and then be able to interact with people around you (even if only hesitantly at first).
 22. Savoir in your sentence, but I think a better question is: C'est combien un billet à Clermont-Ferrand? I'm sure someone French will correct me[;-)] Edit: you could additionally say un billet aller-retour for a return, or un billet simple for a single.
 23. Can I ask, am I the only one who mainly sees squares, interspered by the odd up side down letter (where it can form another letter (b/q) or can be read both up and down (s))?[8-)]
 24. For me, it's all about choice.  Even though I have income (correctly) taxed in the UK, I am actually far more interested in French news and politics, and therefore get the majority of my news from French TV.  It is this interest that will eventually lead me to apply for French citizenship, thus allowing me to vote in my country of resdience.  It is inevitable that on a forum consisting predominantly of Francophile British people, that there will be a lot of interest in events in the UK.  That does not mean we all have to read them!
 25.
Absolutely fed up with ordering coffee and not getting what I want...ask for a petite cafe creme ....... So I am going to take a flask of filtered coffee (black)
If you don't mind black coffee, why ask for a café crème?  Why not ask for a café, and save problems of it being cold etc[8-)] Not a criticism, genuine confusion.
