3. I don't think he's really bothered by what anyone here (or anywhere else) thinks http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/dec/01/mystery-tony-blair-finances
4.   It seems P.T.Barnum’s immortal phrase still holds true.
5. Voir aussi Nèfle du Japon http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C3%A8fle_du_Japon these are what are grown around here and sold in the shops as nèfles. I guess they use the same common name, but those I am given/buy here don't have to be kept until rotten before eating, like medlars in England, which my aunt used to grow.
6. As far as I have been able to tell, nefles here in France (and Spain where they are called nespres) are Loquats, also known as Japanese medlars http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loquat , but they are not the same family as the medlar originally found in UK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mespilus The leaves are very similar
7. "Nefle" is translated as "medlar" in most English-French dictionaries, but they are not medlars.
8. I wanted a large zip for a valise a short while ago. The selection on eBay UK was huge, prices really low, and postage cost insignificant.
9.

Stick to municipal sites for price, not necessarily for quality, although some are excellent.
I would suggest that "some" be changed to "lots", IMHO the poor quality ones are a minority - maybe we were just lucky !
I would go along with "many" - we have stayed at only maybe 20 municipal sites over the years, as we tend to return to those which are on our main routes. A few are good only for an overnight stop.
10. The Midi is overcrowded in summer. If you want a relaxing holiday without queueing half every day at locks, try another canal. Or stay between Roubia and Beziers where there are no locks.

12. It is difficult for manufacturers to continually come up with new names. I heard that Ford planned to call a version of the Cortina "Caprino", until they found that this is a type of goat cheese, and also used colloqually for goat excrement. Toyota's sporty model was widely referred to in the Far East as the "Silly Car".
13. On the three occasions I have purchased in France, later in the year I was asked to pay a proportion of TF, either directly by the seller or via the notaire who handled the sale. I assumed this was the norm until I sold a property and the buyer refused to pay (about 9 months) TF, on the grounds that this was not mentioned in the Acte de Vente. Since then I make sure that responsibility for this payment is specifically agreed in the Acte.
14.
I purchased in Feb and paid a proportion of TF to the previous owner.
I don't understand why you paid a proportion of TF, as seller would not have received the bill at that time. Or was he anticipating receiving it this year and making sure he had your proportion in advance by calculating this on the bill for 2008?
15. Why not just tattoo a number on everyones' forearm?

17. A friend gave us a lemon tree and a little book on its care some years ago. We have found it very useful. I can't copy the relevant pages here as this would infringe copyright. Details are :- Success with Citrus Fruit by Sigrid Hansen-Catania. Publisher :-  Merehurst, ISBN 1-85391-669-2. RRP £2.99   Edit. Just found this http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=success+with+citrus+fruit
18. I saw some 3m -ish wide rolls of nasty thin vinyl floor covering in Weldom yesterday. I didn't notice the price, but maybe it's cheaper than carpet.
19. Import pack Eh! Life hasn't become simpler since the EU, has it? [:D] In 1989 I swapped our Canadian registered LHD Marina, which I had shipped to Europe, for a friend's Spanish registered Mini when he moved back to UK. I wanted to stop paying Spain about £100 a year to drive the Marina there, and he was happy to have a bigger car. He wrote to tell me he got a form from Customs on arrival, took the Marina for an MOT the next day, sent the form and MOT to Swansea and received his new V5 a couple of days later.
20. In business I always used the date on the bill when calculating exchange rates. Well, more or less. No-one ever argued the point.
21. "The replenishment tanker was carrying 75 merchant seamen and 25 Royal Navy sailors, as well as a helicopter, at the time of the incident." When I was in the RN everyone learned to use a rifle. There should have been enough marksmen out of the 25 on board to get one pirate each, as the US, and surely there should have been some well sighted rifles aboard - not a highly priced piece of necessary equipment. What is the point of patrolling the area if they are just going to be spectators when something actually happens? I reckon I could have picked someone off at 15 metres. Although we used an accurate Lee-Enfield, not today's standard issue.
22. As you are registered for TVA in France you have a French business. As such you declare your net business income from France (what you pay tax on in France) on your UK tax return, and claim tax relief on it, as it is already being taxed in France. The TVA cannot be recovered in UK as your French business is not a part of any UK business activity. Registering for VAT in UK would make no difference to this, as that activity would be a separate entity from the French one.
