  1. Why this perpetual whingeing about expats working on the black? It is the norm in France. If they stopped it the overregulated system would grind to a halt. This is from this weekends Figaro and says about 10% of work in the catering trade is black. http://www.lefigaro.fr/economie/20070812.WWW000000031_un_quart_des_hotels_cafes_restaurants_fraudent_l_urssaf.html
  2. Funny you should say that, I have noticed that every anti-virus or whatever programme manages to find a virus that others havent. I now wonder if it isn't a marketing ploy to get you to change.
  3. Try Bit Defender. Much better than anything I've come across in Europe (German I think) . Never had a problem, touch wood. But not the cheapest.
  4. Mostly Clair I have no real problems in France. But if I do I let fly. It always works. And when I go back next time, brilliant. 5. Ron is right. Do the car and telly first, then the taxes then the health.
  6. Oh calamity Will, I'll have to find another term. How about BBnB?
  7. I don't think you mean Consular General, Quillan. I suspect that something like local authority or regional development authority would work bet[8-|]ter
  8. In France they won't believe you if you say that Ernie, such is the stupid position and the paranoia over someone earning a few bob on the side. People who need the money are forced into illegality to give their families a decent standard of living and then some snidy little creep reports them. I have been trumpeting for years that the noir should be recognised and everyone should have the right to earn up to say 10% of their salary extra. If the unemployed were given this too it would ease the pressure on the taxpayer. For the lawabiders, there is plenty of work out there and more would be created. And there should be much severer penalties for those who swindle customers.
  9. Yes LEO, it is good. Under the shower this morning I was thinking of the meaning added if we write A peace of paper = opens up all sorts of possibilities, including Peace in Our Time, peace treaty, paper as a means of peace. Of course then we have a peace of piper which leads elswhere. I quite like BnB or even bnb which is easier to type and probably inevitable.
  10. In those days they died from the bad food. Now we just die from too much of the stuff. And not andouillette. Food of the gods, lovely, animals guts, best part where all the flavour is concentrated. I wonder how it would cook in milk though, like tripe. Could be verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry good indeed. Thanks Cassisi, we'll try that.
  11. Language is what we as a society and individuals want it to be and playing with it is just one thing. The BnB thing created something new (perhaps) which interested you. That is good, but that doesnt mean that it will become an everyday, accepted form. Think of language as plasticine. You can either use moulds to shape it (grammar etc) or mould it yourself into something new, individual, free.
  12. LEO, baby, never go back, never admit to anything.
  13. Language is a plaything as much as anything else.
  14. Finally I've decided to take the plunge and buy the BnB  I've always wanted. Is there much going out there? Where is the best place to look? I've been told of one I should avoid but can't say which or I'll get sued. Any help much appreciated svp.
  15. 10000 things you can get the trots from here in France. Milk is the least of your problems. Start with the wine, cheese ....... Give 'em fresh and have done witrh it.
  16. The word cowboy implies, as far as I am concerned, those who do a bad job. Those who do a good job for half the price should be thanked for bucking the system. The problem is to decide which is which. As for clamping down, hypocritical nonsense. Make the 'black' legal and watch the economy boom.[6] Discuss.
  17. My service is good, sometimes same day, sometimes not. Where is the problem? Cool man, cool. If they are not good enough, then go and have a real shout infront of other customers. Banks hate that because someone might open an a/c elsewhere.? I greet my bank with 'Bonjour, le bordel va bien?'  Reasons for which I can explain in detail, to my shame.
  18. You are doing this wrongly Clair. [6] What you should do is stand in the middle of the shop and shout. It works miracles. Say something like '******************** soit vous venez me donner de l'attention, soit je **** sur votre marchandises' But you are French and could do much better. It does work for me on the rare occasion I have had to get attention. 19. Don't Ryanair do alternate days Poitiers and La Rochelle anyway?
