It just seems to me that £1500 is a lot of cash to fork out if payback is likely to be over centuries. Given the 1kw needs a wind speed of 28mph, and as Nick says is circa £0.09/kw then I think it is a lot for an ugly bit of modern art on top of your house. I have heard that PV panels are a better option, any one any experience of these? Regards Simon

Printing from Interner Explorer?
Simon replied to Jonzjob's topic in French Satellite TV, French Internet and Telephone
You might find this page useful, try updating your msoffice for a start. Simon -
I think Nick is right, I suspect you will be looking at 3 figures if you want payback, also who wants such an ugly thing on the roof! Simon

Connecting phone wires to RJ45 socket
Simon replied to Le 47's topic in French Satellite TV, French Internet and Telephone
From the phone cable to the french phone socket, grey goes to 1 and white to 3 if I remember correctly. If you are using CAT5 cable then it doesn't matter which cable goes to where as long as it is the same both ends. Simon -
Connecting phone wires to RJ45 socket
Simon replied to Le 47's topic in French Satellite TV, French Internet and Telephone
If I were you I would connect all 8 wires to the RJ45 sockets, and use patch leads or rj45/rj11 convertors to connect the phones. Simon -
I've upgraded twice once to 18 kw and then to 3 phase, no problems at all. It sounds like inconsistent service depending where you are. Simon

Can you drive in France at 17 on an english full licence?
Simon replied to ninahookins's topic in Driving in France
OK, so that is 18 with a full UK licence, but what about a provisional? If I want to teach my son to drive both in the UK and in France can a do that, and does he need to be 18 if I am with him? Regards Simon -
I wouldn't go anywhere near explaining spotted dick if I were you...
You are 1 up on me Simon. I didn't think you could get MDF here. I'll have to look in our Point P. I don't like the stuff, but it's much better than chip board for some things. (Oh dear, that should get me in stuck with Chris H? [:-))])
No I am not fond of it for most applications, but ripping it down, and routing it for skirting board is cheap and effective. Regards Simon

I can't seem to find a price for MDF (medium?) sheets online anywhere, I know Point P carry them but their site does not give the cost. What can I expect to pay for something say 2.8m x 2m x 19mm, or longer if possible? Regards Simon

Radio via ADSL
Simon replied to Ian 56's topic in French Satellite TV, French Internet and Telephone
Try a silm devices squeezebox3, I use a few around the house for playing my cd collection and streaming radio. I think they are a better product than the Roku http://www.slimdevices.com/ Simon -
Switching Service Providers
Simon replied to Simon's topic in French Satellite TV, French Internet and Telephone
Thanks all, that is very helpful. It looks as if 6mb is max for my area, but that is ok and more than the 2mb I get presently. I see from the Orange.fr site that you have to ring their €0.34/ minute number to find out how to cancel. Anyone done this and have the address to write too? Simon -
I have a phone line with France Telecom, and a 2mb ADSL service with Orange - Wanadoo that was, I would like to take up one of the total packages offered by the likes of Neuf and Free, but I struggle a bit with the language. What would be the most straightforward way to shift my accounts? Do I need to inform FT and Orange myself if I subscribe online to a new ISP, or will the new company do that for me? Any pointers as to which ISP to go for would be welcome, I am looking for an unlimited ADSL service and free calls to the UK as a minimum. Regards Simon

A difficult one to answer as I suspect you will get as many options as replies. My advice is to buy a router rather (than a modem) a good examples of which are the Netgear range of DG834, DG834GT, or the DG834PN, these are easy to configure, and are wireless; though I think the PN version is over priced for the performance. There are plenty of others around, just make sure you get something easy to setup. Regards Simon

INTERNET CONNECTION
Simon replied to bixy's topic in French Satellite TV, French Internet and Telephone
If you want my twopence, I would spend a few extra quid and buy a router instead of the modem. You will get a more reliable connection, less to do in way of installation, the ability to plug in more than one computer, many are wireless, less issues with viruses and spam. It also means when you upgrade your pc you can plug the new one straight into the router without having to re-install anything. Regards Simon -
Bookmarks, Manage Bookmarks, file, export. Then import the generated html file by doing the same on the other pc. Simon

Yes and possibly a new motherboard and/or USB port. Simon -
Yes, run plastic, but I'd put them in conduit for ease of changing decades hence. Simon
Another British attitude that fails to translate well into French.
Yes pity that, I find most aspects of French life are excellent and for the good of the citizen, this aspect though flies in the face of the that as it allows the the fraudsters a loophole. Simon

I find it a bit odd that companies are allowed to charge in advance in this way, surely it is their problem if they need money to buy materials, that is what the banks are for. Simon

France Telecom
Simon replied to pigeon's topic in French Satellite TV, French Internet and Telephone
I'm interested in the €29.99 deal from free.fr, but I suspect as I can only get 2mb where I am that will restrict some of the services I can use. Does the TV bit work on such a slow speed or do you need the adsl2+ at full 28mb? Simon -
