  1. Is this due to the earthen floors so favoured in France?
  2. Washy, We know him well, he bangs on our downstairs shutters....drives the wife to distraction!  He helps himself to the fruit on display outside the local shop. I spotted him recently being beaten over the head with a shopping basket by a woman on Espéraza Sunday market!
  3. Try restoring to an earlier back-up, then do all your scans, virus, SpyBot etc. If OK thus far do a manual set up of Wanadoo.
  4. I have found that by obtaining and presenting a Leclerc or Champion card at the checkout no problems are encountered. I used to have my French cheques declined before as they were "out of region" but now they don't even ask for ID after presenting their loyalty cards.
  5. Ian It was "On Speed" that I have recently ditched. Are you sure that it is 7.6 times better/faster or a 7.6% improvement. The highest improvement that I ever received was 4.5% ( mostly 1.5% ) and if this had been 4.5 times better/faster then I would have kept it. This was on UK wanadoo and tiscali. fr dial-up.
  6. Chris, Leroy-Merlin have what I believe you are looking for plus reams of other info. in pdf format. For an example see the link below. http://www.leroymerlin.fr/mpng2-front/pre?zone=zonecatalogue&idLSPub=1095261499
  7. Leroy Merlin conseils can be downloaded and printed from their web site, I have bound these and use them as my DIY "bible".
  8. I believe that Astra 2D and Hotbird are too far apart for this to be successfull but perhaps Mazan can input. Personally I use the motorised solution.
  9. Britline do charge to receive a Sterling cheque but not travellers cheques. ( See extract from the Britline web pages).   Compte Service Equilibre (per month) 5€ Eurocard Mastercard immediate debit card 34€ (second card 17€) Commission on card payments not in Euros 1.95% + 0.10€ Handling fee - Cash withdrawals outside France Distributer 0.60% + 1 € Counter 0.60% + 5 € Re-issuing confidential code (PIN) for card * 7.20€ Bank to bank national French transfer 3.70€ Express bank to bank national French transfer to Notaire 10.17€ Issuing a Bankers Draft (Chèque de Banque)
  10. When I moved into my house there were 4 cardboard boxes of Barbara Cartland paperbacks in the attic. All were in French and in pristine condition and apparently every one she had published. The bookseller on Espéraza market thought it was his birthday!
  11. Carl, SANEF normally require a fax copy of your credit card, if in doubt stop at the SANEF bureau at the first toll from Calais, unless there is one at port of entry, they will fax it for you. The only time that I remove my badge is to swap it between two cars.
  12. Can you not download a RIB from the La Poste web site? I know you can from CA.
  13. Be wary! I obtained a Telepéage badge from SANEF using my UK Visa card and unless they have changed their modus-operandi your contract expires on the same date as your Visa card  and does not automatically renew. My card expired in August 2003 and in September I took the orange lane at Reims and the barrier would not open. As luck would have it many French drivers seeing a Brit. car at the telepéage barrier stay back quite expecting the Brit. to reverse out. The badge had allowed me to pass through the orange lane at Calais. As I didn't have a ticket, I went into the Telepéage bureau at the toll and all was explained to me, so as I had a Britline account I changed to payment by direct debit and haven't had any problems since. I use the Autoroute from Calais to Perpignan return 5 times a year and a lot of time is saved at the tolls especially at Lyon during lunchtimes when they close more than half the booths for staggered lunches.
  14. I have to agree Miki, I am getting so frustrated with the red "server error", timeout etc. messages that I must quit this forum for the sake of my health!!
  15. Paul, I spend 5 months in France and 7 months in the UK each year and pay my dues, fully, in each country and do not expect to take anything from either country to which I am not entitled. If I could not afford to do so, I would not own a property (or television) in France. I would not wish the French taxpayer to support my lifestyle.
  16. I seem to remember that the free download may identify the problem but not allow it to be fixed, you have to subscibe to fix it.
  17. Well said Miki. I just cannot understand why the scroungers come to France when they know exactly how to milk the UK system.
  18. I use BadCopyPro from http://www.jufsoft.com/badcopy/ I have used this successfully on several occasions to recover cd's for the  embroidery designs used by my OH.
  19. That's what you get for going into McD's. Most of their regular clients have become brain damaged.
  20. You can get your debit card limit raised, either temporarily or permanently, by telephone, or at least you could. The only limit on writing a cheque is the fund available in your account. Most stores have cheque writers if like me, your French is not up to writing a French cheque.
  21. In the absence of anyone more knowledgable posting a reply, I offer the following: I do not know about exporting carp varieties but to import them an Environmental Agency permit is needed to prevent two well known diseases (Spring Viraemia and Koi Herpes Virus) from being introduced to the UK. There has been a considerable number of incidents of carp being stolen from French waters and smuggled in through the Channel ports and recently two smugglers were jailed for bringing in large carp in a tank in the back of a Range Rover These carp were carrying Spring Viraemia which is deadly to the species. I would suggest that you contact the EA as they are responsible for all fish movements.
  22. In an established pond ormental fish self regulate their population so as not to destroy their habitat. Should they initially over populate, then expect to lose a few.
  23. You should not need to change your LNB just put a splitter into your existing coax and connect to each receiver. Then do as you suggest with a SCART change over. A neater solution would be to change your receiver for a digital/analogue one obviating the need for a splitter and SCART switch. These were available very cheaply in June/July from DIY outlets in SE France.
  24. English or French based? If English there are usually 2 or 3 advertised in Classic Car Weekly.
