  1. I do mine plain, but with red wine for sauce/gravy, but then I am usually doing a 'traditional roast dinner' when I do it. I'd be quite happy with it for a background flavour, though.
  2. Easy - yes. Cheap - no. But probably worth the expense. I am now using OS 10.3 and it is very stable and quick, and pleasant to look at. Look at the Apple Store and see if you can wangle an educational discount... Dick
  3. Go to System Preferences (click on the Apple at the top left of the screen on the menu bar) and choose Network. You then have a series of boxes to complete. Put in a description of your location (important if you are likely to use the computer to connect in more than one place), then choose Internal Modem from the drop-down menu next to . Under TCP/IP configure using PPP (but check this with your ISP - there are variables). Under PPP put in your account name (mine is with free.fr, so it is the part before @ in my email address), your password (given by your ISP) and the phone number for dialup. The Proxies tab probably won't have anything to enter, but check the Modem section with your ISP. Then click on and close that window. Open Internet Connect and configure , then enter the telephone number (if not already there) and your password again. Also best to check the box if you haven't already. Now click on the big, blue pulsing 'connect' button. In general, I would go through all of this with your ISP helpline - mine is configured now, and I can't remember all the choices, but I think that's about it. I don't think there are any major differences between different versions of OSX. Good luck! Dick
  4. Do you mean the 1957 film or the TV series? If you try Google you may find the film is available, nothing on the TV series, even the book is out of print and unavailable at Amazon. Regards, Dick
  5. I have found it very difficult to get a clear idea of where I will find motor racing circuits in France, except for the biggies such as Le Mans, Magny-Cours, Paul Ricard etc. Where are the circuits which hold 'clubbie' meetings? And does anyone have a clear idea of where the old Rouen GP circuit was, and where the later closed circuit is/was? And a calendar of meetings would be a real bonus... Regards, Dick
  6. As a serious answer to this question - I know that in the UK we need about 4 pieces of information to positively identify someone, usually name, age, gender and one other. In a population of 50+ millions there are hundreds of duplicates - how many Richard Smiths are there in the UK, for example? Given that there are three at my doctor's and two at the dentist, quite a few. Is this worse in France, possibly due to the relatively restricted number of given names which until the last generation had to be from the 'official' list? Regards, Dick
  7. Amazon (UK) will deliver to France (I've had to use them in a no-book summer holiday emergency), and they are usually pretty competitive on price. Regards, Dick
  8. There is an interesting piece on the French government's response to race-hate crime on the BBC website at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3275519.stm Dick
  9. Could we agree that there is 'culture' - what a sociologist would mean, the way of life of the people, and 'Culture' - the stuff that costs a lot of money and often involves people realising that they are about to marry/kill their long-lost twin or gets hung on walls? They are two different things, yet in these threads they are mercilessly entwined... Dick
  10. You are correct - there is a real moral dilemma in this question, but the moral aspect also has so many practical ramifications. If French (or any other) society does not act to help disadvantaged groups (and these are not 'immigrant' per se) then it is storing up trouble, yet to take affirmative action disadvantages other groups. I can only see sensitive and pragmatic action as an answer, to be dogmatic (or hysterical) won't help. In essence, both sides of the debate are right, and all of us are very poor at recognising when that situation occurs, and being able to plan for a resolution of it. Dick
  11. It is my understanding that the right to education is specifically applied by Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights, to which France is a signatory.
  12. Usually advertised in the local papers, or ask a neighbour. We get ours through our builder. Dick
  13. >After reading about the old postings >- which were mainly derogatory >- about VEF being deleted >do I assume that we >can say nothing against anyone >who advertises in LF? Keep on going - let's see if you CAN get the whole site closed. That would be a mature and positive act, wouldn't it? I also run a list, and if I kept getting this sort of thing I would seriously consider jacking it in. Another list of which I am a member has served historians of WW1 well for years, but the listowner is considering stopping because of abuse she receives for enforcing list rules of etiquette. If you don't like it, leave it.
  14. Recent research in the UK (for what it's worth) finds that it costs 1200 a year to send a child to a state school, report at http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_815961.html?menu= Cheaper to send them to Butlin's? Dick
  15. I don't know what has happened, but for no apparent reason I seem to be able to post again. I didn't change anything after the last time, but I did delete a load of cookies - but not the Living France ones...
  16. LAST EDITED ON 26-Jun-03 AT 12:21 PM (GMT) One look at this website shows that Freddy is right - it's a scam, or at least a way of parting the gullible (those who watch lifestyle tv?) from their cash. And as noted elsewhere - is this post a shill from a family member publicising the site and 'service'? (Also - the spelling in the original email is atrocious which somehow makes me suspicious, don't know why.)
  17. We have the same problem, and were thinking of the paper-backed fibreglass covered by painted plasterboard. We were told, however, that the amount of sound insulation is limited because the floorboards still make direct contact with the beams and joists, and so the noise is still partially transmitted. Has anyone tried this and is able to give a definitive answer before we start? Dick
  18. No problems at all changing plugs, but make sure that you use earthed plugs where there are 3 wires. For extensions how about an English extension cable (ie 3 flat-pin sockets) with a French plug? I have made up a couple and they are very useful, especially if you are not yet resident but visiting. Dick
  19. What is it with the red and white gloss on bricks? We had the same in our living room. We painted the outer part, which is concrete, with cream eggshell finish and the inner part with matt black car paint. The eggshell worked, the car paint isn't too bad. You will probably need several coats, though. We brought our paint out from England (Homebase 10% days - marvellous!). It has been on about eight months and seems ok. Good luck! Dick
