1.
Father Christmas just bought me a Kobo, similar to Kindle but not tied to Amazon and can read many formats, I have found that by using a program called Calibre I can convert and read almost any format, it will also convert books to read on Kindle and many other devices, it is a free download and works well in my experience so far.  Natively it will not remove any DRM  but other programs are available to do that if you wish. Regarding cheap books, I would tend to agree with other posters that there is little on Amazon at the moment for my tastes in the cheap offers. I am unsurprised that people will pirate books, I accept that authors and publishers need to make a living, otherwise we would have nothing to read, but when it is cheaper to buy a book in hard copy, which has had to be supplied with paper, printed, stored and distributed, than it is to buy the same novel as an ebook, which is merely a modification of the electronic format used to print a hard copy book, then people will vote with their feet and go to other sources.  At worst case they should cost 50% of the cost of a hard copy book. I also object that having bought an ebook, I apparently do not have the right to read it on another device at a different time, or even lend it to a friend as I would with a hard copy book, it is not theft or any form of deceit, I have bought it, I should be allowed to do what I want with it, just like a hard copy book, and until this issue is addressed there will be more people getting pirated books. I do not advocate pirating books, or music or films, but while there is greed amongst suppliers, it will continue to happen, but 5000 books for £5 almost anywhere on ebay has got to be a bargain as opposed to the official channels, even if you do not read 90% of them.
Kindle and the Nook allow for multiple device reading. They have an auto sync system which means if you read a book on your ebook reader, and then open it up to read on your phone or pc, you will automatically be taken to that page you were last on. Ebooks, should be a lot cheaper than they are though, that is definite.
2. When I went to NZ, I didn't know a lot about the country. I felt ripped off. I didn't know all the mountains were on the south island. I had visited the north! Still a beautiful country. I found the LOTR movies very long and boring, but will still go to see The Hobbit when it comes out. I think Martin Freeman is the perfect cast choice.
3. I'm in the same situation. Had my ears unblocked last year and then a hearing test, my high frequency hearing is shot, which must explain why I don't listen to my better half... I do suffer from tinnitus. Ironically, I can't bear to have the tv up loud (neither can my other half), yet the kids have it way up high. They are not exposed to any loud noises, they rarely if ever wear headphones, and yet they must have the tv up loud.
4. Opera is my browser for general surfing and relaxing (I only use Firefox for work), but I am unable to log in to the site using Opera. The red log in button doesn't work. Is there any way a simple text log in button can be added so I can get on?
5.

If you're doing a lot of graphic work, definitely a mac.
Could you expand on that a bit for me (I've never used a Mac) - surely an application is the same whether it's on Mac or PC ?
Sorry for lateness in reply, I've had login problems. My reasoning for this is as follows. I'm studying graphic design at college and am switching between two systems (and in two languages as my laptop is in French with an AZERTY keyboard, while the computer I use at college is in English with QWERTY - it gets confusing, especially with keyboard shortcuts etc). Anyway, I use a Mac at college and am pushing the system a lot in the amount of applications I have open and so forth. The Mac has never crashed. My PC laptop, which is of similar specs, is often struggling to keep up and I often have to force close programs as they end up hanging. The Mac interface is far superior and smoother than windows and if you are using it a lot, it makes such a difference in the speed and way you work. It's like if you're a carpenter and you use a €7 Brico Depo electric planer compared to a €80 Bosch planer. Your final product will be so much better. Having said that, when I finally sell my house and have money again, I will be upgrading my laptop. I plan to get a windows laptop with a 17" screen and use it purely for my work. Nothing else, no junk etc on it, and I'll buy a cheap tablet for surfing the web etc.
6. I'd say it depends on what you want to do. If it's just surfing, I wouldn't bother with a computer, and get a tablet instead. If you're doing a lot of graphic work, definitely a mac. If it's for general use, then a pc would provide you with best value for money.
7. Can't believe how much this thread has gone off topic. Surely a scrambled kindle is far more important than some dumb old people's lives?
8.
That's very useful information, I don't think, and in any case not relevant to the original poster's call for help! The Kindle versus the rest discussion can be found elsewhere.
I did answer her call to help. I posted a link on how to convert a doc to azw format.
9. http://www.ehow.com/how_5147554_convert-doc-azw.html This is why I love my Nook, reads so many more formats than the Kindle.
10. Reformat and reinstall. Maybe sell on ebay if you have no need for it. Or even use it to back up your docs and pics.
11. You may also want to bear in mind that it is strongly advisable to optimise your web site for mobile use. Wordpress has a plug in that can automatically format your site for mobile users. Within the next year (if not already), the majority of internet access use will be via smartphones, tablet pcs or even ebook readers. So if you're not set up for this, you could lose out on a lot of traffic.
12. Have to wait another week for the clocks to go back here. Won't make any difference to me, the dog doesn't know the clocks go back, but his stomach will still wake me up at the same time!
13. Had the inspection, but no go, the woman didn't like it. So we continue on, but they would have bought at the asking price which is at least some comfort. Have been told the house is in good condition, although looks lived in (as it would with a tenant), so my fears of a destroyed house have been allayed. Hope I get a buyer soon.
14. Wordpress is the way to go. Very easy to use and perfect for someone who doesn't know much about web design. Thousands of themes to choose from and you make posts as easy as on here. If you use http://www.bluehost.com/ to host your site, you'll get your domain name free for a year and wordpress is automatically activated on your account. My site in my signature was done using this method. Didn't take very long to set up at all.
15. Not as famous as Steve Jobs, but arguably has left a far greater legacy for being the man who created the C programming language for which most OS's use and of course Unix.
16. I think the French are going to be hammered. But all my predictions so far have been wrong.
17. He's allowing access. Think I said that on the previous page.
18. I think what Idun and Chancer are pertaining to is that he's waiting out til November and will stay in the house rent free until spring. They're looking at worst case and to be honest I have had fears along those lines too. Despite my difficulties with him, I think he is on the level, he is just a very poor communicator.
19. Thanks for that Frenchie, it seems he is finally playing ball now, but I will keep that in mind.
20. Thanks, I just hope the potential buyers realise it's currently a rental and so probably doesn't look as good as it does in the pics. But the pics show there is potential there and it wouldn't take a lot of work to bring it back up to scratch.
21. Update: He has been still paying me rent and he is up to date on it. He informs me he hopes to be out by the end of the month but is still looking for somewhere. I have a very interested viewer driving up from Portugal next Wednesday to look at the house and he is allowing access. So hopefully, all being well... fingers crossed all round.
22.
But then you left France to move to the USA Mr C de L!
One of my worst moves was Oz to France though. :(
23. Yep, I'm aware it'll be the full bill (think it's an extra 8 euros I'll have to pay if I pay it next year). No that's fine, gives me a year to get the money over to my account in France, by which time hopefully it will have sold anyway. The annual amount is only 333 euros, and I don't care if I pay it all so long as someone buys my house. Thanks for getting it clear in my mind.
