  1. May work until somebody realises what he's up to. And can't be that bright if he blabs about it.
  2. There is ACIP (Association Culturelle International de perigord) in 24, based in the St Cyprien area, Library at Meyral/Carmensac, lots of other activities. PM me if you are interested in more details.
  3. Hi Ray Not to mention the fact that when Asama ben Ladin was on our side in Afghanistan and Saddam Hussein was on our side against the Iranians, the USA was only too pleased to arm and fund that little lot, it's in the Congressional records of all the payments and they US government was open about the funding/arms deals. Chile, Contra scandal etc .........
  4. I agree with Ray, LF isn't a current affairs magazine. And what would they actually publish, comments made on here?  Probably end up being prosecuted if they published some of the comments!
  5. The French State and Catholic Church formally broke the Concordat of 1810 in 1905 when the Catholic Church was disestablished. However, if you use any of the Archive Departmental, which I do for work, it's interesting that all the records of the etat civile are the records from the mairie/Catholic Church and that all other religious beliefs and strands - Protestantisme, Judaism & Muslim - are recorded as Cultes, rather than in the mainstream, and that's 100 years AFTER the supposed split.
  6. The UK Police now have a comuter facility which is directly linked to UK insurance company's central data base so if these cars go back to the UK, the Police can get information about them much quicker. According to one of the UK broadsheets the new automatic registration plate readers over motorways - port roads being targetted which should make life interesting for some our our fellow ex-pats who go back in their uninsured cars - will be used to send letters to the last registered address of the car owner, same way as they now can with VELs, prosecution to follow apparently if there is no response. And I sem to recall that the original message is also word for word the same as TK's message - another wind-up probably.

  8. "but when did religious hatred become a crime?" Like it or not, religious hatred is a crime in some countries especially when linked to race.  Perhaps if religious hatred was a crime in the UK then some of the rubbish in Northern Ireland might not have happened on BOTH sides - big might though. 2000 years AD and religious hatred is still 'informing' decisions we make about other people rather than find out what really makes them think the way that they do, not much change there then.  Just change the religions as you want to, all interchangable, Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and most, at one time or another, tearing each other to bits, really or figuratively.
  9. Hi James Quillan has got it right about the rules of the Forum but there is also the wider picture.  As a UK/European company Living France's owners are also covered by UK/European law and whilst the Commission for Racial Equality has no jurisdiction over the Internet, the Internet Watch Foundation, which is partly funded by the EU, does. Therefore any racist comments which may be illegal in the various EU countries - for example, deemed to be likely to encite racial or religious hatred - could lead to the company being prosecuted if the racist comments are allowed to stay on the Forum. According to the advice that I got about another forum in which I'm involved, having volunteer and unpaid Mods does not change or lessen the Company's responsibility. And of course, the IWF has authority to go after the posters as well, same as they do with kiddy porn for example.
  10. I think that mint sauce is poisonous to sheep, every time I see sheep and mint sauce the sheep is dead.
  11. The series has got wide coverage in the French history journals and mags over the past few weeks, lots of additional information about the historical characters in hard copy. Part of my company's research period, plus it's the Templars, so required watching.  And the sooner the whole thing is out on DVD the better, will make good watching with La reine Margot, Cyrano de Bergerac etc, all good religion and political films.
  12. It depends where in London the lawyer is, what the speciality is and a number of other factors - you'll pay more for a lawyer in central London than you will for a lawyer in Acton or Romford. There is a help line at the Law Society in London, google for them, they're also online - I'd speak to them first, get some informal advice and follow what they tell you, they are the regulatory body and they have a statutory duty to help you.
  13. Hi Katrina I do know of a long-term rent becoming available in 24 in November this year, plenty of space for two people and well behaved dog, Carmensac Haut just north of St Cyprien, 24. PM me if you want more details.
  14. Sad that you're both going.  I know what you mean, arguments for the apparent sake of it, when some people post just waiting for the response from the permenant sparring partners that take the thread away from the subject and, as mentioned on other threads, seems to be the same people attacked and attacking all the time. Come on admin, get a grip of this - I dropped off this Forum some time ago because of this and came back about 6 months ago and hey ho, we seem to be starting it all again.
  15. I've got the print, still in the frame but stored in the garage so I can't get to it.  I bought my copy from a wonderful healthfood shop and cafe in Lavender Hill, SW London, long since closed down. Always a joy to look at but I didn't think it was French but British.
  16. Interesting difference between the - for you Ty - balanced reply here and the rant and abuse in the personal message you sent me, not for the first time I might add.
  17. I haven't got a personalised number plate - can't have one on French cars - but what if I did have in the UK?  My money after all. As the French don't have them, trying to wind the French up about something that they don't have, can ever get nor understand the concept of properly is like trying a wind-up here. Interesting to see whether your business registration covers you for totting - thought you were registered as a gardener but hey, it's only you that can criticise others for nicking your work - how about the brocante owners who might sell the stuff you're taking back to the UK? And I know you'll have a fascile excuse for doing it, perhaps somebody should take the time to run you to the tax authorities.
  18. If the person is early retired on medical grounds and there is little hope of returning to work, they most certainly would be entitled to an E121. I have a variety of linked medical conditions and retired early - for the second time - 18 months ago aged 56.  I asked for and received an E121 with no hassle at all.
  19. Has this got anything to do with living in France - we've heard Ty's views on this before and just seems to be a thread for the sake of it.
  20. Since we've been here (Feb this year) we've been flooded, got ourselves albeit through our insurance company in a right royal row with the vendor over a vice cache though it looks as though this may be a win for us, we can't do anything inside the house while we wait for the result except the kitchen and bathroom, garden is full of those long brown and green tree thingys or plants. We live 4 km from the local Champion, it's an hour to Bergerac or Perigueux for bigger shops, half an hour to Sarlat, two hours or thereabouts to Bordeaux and Ikea AND place is full of French.  We need two cars and we have to drive everywhere including about 1.5km to our local village - which has no commerce at all! And we love every minute of it - life long learning, changed our life style, said goodbye to East London/Essex and haven't looked back, met the odd miserable eejit but nowhere near as many as in London, love the small things - like people coming into shops and saying bon jour to total strangers - and all the other little kindnesses. It's all a challenge, including the language.
  21. For those interested in visits to wineries, tastings and the like there is a new wine group being set up for everybody, French included, in the St Cyprien area of 24, through the auspices of Association Culturelle Internationale du Perigord (ACIP). First lot of visits being lined up for the new year, just looking for the vineyards that do lunch as well. Further details from [email protected]
  22. My OH is really particular about her hair, she used to pay a small fortune in the UK going to some very smart and exclusive hairdressers in Covent Garden, Trevor Sorbie I think. Over here we managed to find a place where the owner, just by chance, not only trained at Vidal Sasoon in London in the 1970s but also speaks some English.  So now we get both haircuts/whatever women have done, for less that I used to pay in the UK. What amazes me is that a small town like St Cyprien in 24 can support so many haidressing establishement and the coiffeur domiciles also.
  23. I think that all the chickens should have Lemsip put into their feed and that will soon sort out this flu thing, Night Nurse would knock them out for a few hours if they were feeling slightly worse and when they wake up, they'll be feeling a lot better. Really, this is getting out of hand - ONLY 60 people out of ??? billions across the world have died of this strain of flu in something like 15 years. The type of flu that killed millions of people in 1919 is still about and you don't hear this sort of discussion about that in the media, nor is there constant reporting of the Asian strain that killed people in the 1960s and that is still around. On BBC last evening they were showing chickens being burned alive in Bulgaria or somewhere, the Greeks have buried 3000 chickens alive. I'll worry about it when the farmers in the Dordogne or my local village are dropping like flies with the strain but by then, as I'm high risk because of my blood condition, I'll have had the meds to go with my flu jab anyway.
  24. I know that other people may have had bad experiences here in France but as somebody who has to have regular blood tests - I've had 8 since we arrived in February - the system here beats the UK hands down as far as I'm concerned. It's even got to the stage where I phone for an appointment and the nurses know who I am and where I live, if they're out, they just turn up the next morning.  Results with me and the Doc, mine via the Pharmacie, next morning. In the UK I've waited weeks for test restults at my GPs and then have the frustration of having to phone the 'results line', always engaged and when I get through to be told the Doc hasn't seen the results yet, they're lost (like single socks, wonder where all the lost medical reports end up) or they haven't arrived yet after a three week turn around. I get to see my specialist here within a week, just telephone for an appointment and my change from 60/whatever% to 100% for all the medication was dealt with my specialist and CPAM in 6 days. Need a new filing cabinet though for all the paperwork that it generates but now have some great pics of my internals bits and pieces to bore the family with.
  25. Wonderful Emmental and many other cheeses from Annette, Dutch cheese woman, St Cyprien, La Bugue and Sarlat markets in 24. The Tome and entre deux are especially good, together with mature pecorino and parmesan. Can't miss her stall, large orange parasol covering everything.
