  1. For the last 2/3 weeks we have had wonderfully sunny days, although a nip in the air until the sun rises, and it looks set to continue. Not sure that it is good for the planet or the water table, but a comfort to my old bones to be able to sit out for a couple of hours at a café table in shirt sleeves in January...
  2. Back to a time when posters were knowledgeable about French culture (in this case films) and able to discuss it in a civilized fashion ..

  7. So says Mr Pompous Windbag himself: The man full of opinions based on unsubstantiated assertion, who never posts anything helpful or useful. This whole thread is a disgrace, both in the lack of compassion and common humanity of many comments, and for the elementary errors of reasoning that abound. It has sickened me and like several other posters I will be taking a break from this Forum. Good luck to anyone who needs help with life in France and asks people such as Ken.
  8. Those referred to as "Migrants" are people whose lives have the same value as that of the British immigrants in France who like to call themselves 'expats' huff and puff about the situation. No man is an Iland, intire of itselfe; every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a Clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Manor of thy friends or of thine owne were; any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee. 10. Between January 2020 and May 2021 91% of people arriving after crossing the Channel came from just ten countries where human rights abuses and persecution are common. These include Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Iraq, Sudan, Eritrea and Yemen. For the top 10 countries of origin arriving by small boat, 61% of initial decisions made in the 18 months to June 2021 would have resulted in refugee protection being granted. This compares to the grant rate of 52% for decisions made for all nationalities in the same period. Many of the nationalities crossing the Channel have an even higher likelihood of being granted status. We found that for Syrians the grant rate is likely to be 88%, for Eritreans 84%, for Sudanese and those from Yemen 70%, and for Iranians 67%. Following a an initial refusal of an asylum claim 59% of appeals are likely be allowed for the top 10 countries of origin for people crossing the Channel, compared to 46% for appeals allowed for all countries. There are extremely limited alternative ‘safe routes’ available for many of the top nationalities crossing the Channel. The UK did not resettle a single person from Kuwait, Yemen or Vietnam in the period January 2020 to May 2021 and only one person from Iran was resettled. 11. Away from all danger Away from all danger and snug in his bed The great British bulldog lays down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky look down where he snores The great British bulldog, with firmly locked doors. The child in the night air there shivers and weeps, But the great British bulldog, how soundly he sleeps. I love you, great bulldog, please guard me from fear, And keep all those migrants from entering here. Be near me, great bulldog, be faithful and stay Close by me forever and love me I pray; Love all the dear children who live in this land, And keep out those other ones – they’ll understand.
  12. "The British taxpayer is being gouged to pay for this: plus holistic services (Health, Education, Housing) simply cannot cope". This is not correct. Illegal immigrants cannot claim benefits in the UK. A person is classed as an illegal immigrant when they do not have the right to remain in the country. The UK government, in response to a petition urging it to “Stop all benefits to illegal immigrants completely”, said in 2015: “Illegal immigrants and failed asylum seekers are not entitled to, and do not get, benefits from the UK’s welfare system” Source https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-immigrant-benefits-uk-idUSKBN22J30G

Don't forget that the price goes up each year as you get older, so it isn't just a question of an increase for the same thing. Since I was 70 mine has been going up a lot each year. I have stuck with mine since I believe(perhaps erroneously) that it becomes more and more difficult to find one that will accept a new member as you get oldee.

  20. By the way in the quotation from Attal there was a a good example of a 'faux ami' ( a word that looks very similar in English and French but with very different meanings in the two languages: ""qui peuvent donc prétendre à une dose de rappel." here "prétendre" means are "eligible for" and so the phrase can be translated as "so who are eligible for a booster dose"
  21. This means to me that the loss of the pass concerns people who had the second injection six months ago and so can now have the booster, (but haven't had it). Those such as Nick who haven't yet reached six months since the second dose are not yet affected. I reckon that is clear and fair. The Corection goes a bit further in saying 'as long as they have it etc' which is what is implied, but I haven't seen a French source that says that so explicitly Nick
