mains drainage

Recommended Posts

We are in a different part of Charente in the Aigre area, however we very recently had the same query. We asked at the Marie. It was our first visit to the office and our French is very limited however we managed to make ourselves understood. The girl in the office showed us a plan of what communes had approved the 'assainissement collectif'. Lucky for us our hamlet is one of them. However she did tell us they haven't a clue when this is going to all happen as it is very expensive - certainly it doesn't look likely in the next 2 years. We are going to hold on though as  would rather spend money on connecting to mains drainage than install an up to date fosse septique.

In January 2003 we were invited to the Mayor's reception in our commune and in his speech he said that the whole commune would be on mains drainage by 2006 - a little chuckle went aound the room.

This year at the Mayor's New Year reception someone asked him how the works were progressing.........

Hi, we are in a hameau of 7 houses, when Zeb talks about a chuckle above, for us it was a belly laugh. That includes the mayor himself, can't say whether the twinkle in his eye is laughs or tears. The cost would be ....beyond anything that was OK. However, we had the pipes to our all singing and dancing fosse put in as close to the boundary as allowed, just in case.

Before installation, when we asked the mayor whether we should also put the pipes for mains drainage in, 'just in case', well on this occasion, tears were rolling down his face, as he said "non". It was one of those rare situations where you wonder, then, unbelievably, you are certain you understand the score. We had them put in anyway, paranoid fools that we are, because you never know, the government may one day want to pay a gazillion pounds for us to be on mains drainage. Only joking, do as you think best, as we did

I think this mains drainage business is another French myth

When we bought our house in 2000 our Fr. estate agent told us that in 2 years time the WHOLE of France would be on mains drainage!

Well we are still waiting and I doubt our commune will ever have the money to finance it. As one of our neighbours said, our village will probably be the last to get it.

Just to say thank you to all who replied.  We have (our agents have) a certificate from the Maire confirming the mains drainage is going to happen - no dates though!! - surprise, surprise.  So until then, at some time in the future, we are looking for alternatives.

We do not have enough land for a septic tank and are currently investigating 'mini sewage treatment thing??'  any ideas??
Is it possible to find out BEFORE purchasing a house if it needs a fosse septique? How much do they cost, do you have to pay a yearly charge? How does the financial bits & pieces work??? Help!
If in a Town probably not as it would hopefully be mains, if rural and a wreck yes you will, if rural habitable simply ask the owner, the average installed cost is I think around 4 / 4500 euros. there are no charges once installed unless you get it emptied once in a blue moon.
We are hoping to buy a property in Chirac, Charente and have heard that properties in the area are to be conected to mains drainage starting 2006. Has anyone heard of this happening in the area??
By law, I forget the number (something of 1999?), all communes with population of 400+ (I think) have to have a plan for mains drainage by the end of 2006. That's having a plan - not the drainage. I was told recently that it has to be installed by end 2009 when it becomes illegal to discharge grey water to the street.

The cost is recovered through the water charge, as in the UK. You pay approx 1.5 times the cost of water used - plus the cost of water used - that's 2.5 times.

If it hasn't got one it probably doesn't need one. Until you come to fit a new bathroom or shower.

The alternatives are: Mains drains, a fosse (septique or etanche) or a puits-perdu (a kind of soakaway). Puits-perdus are now illegal for new-build and for additional santary load and, in theory should be replaced within the next five years.

A 2000 litre fosse septique will cost about 2000 euros - installed. The bigger the more expensive. We had a puits-perdu, but had to have a fosse put in for our new bathroom. Took three days and cost 1900 euros.

Check with your Mairie for plans and timetable.
