Am going to go down to dept 41 and save a 8yr old Percheron Mare from Slaughter tomorrow.(see link:

Is there anyone out there kind enough to lend me a Horse trailer to go and collect her sometime late this week or early next week.

I live between Domfront & Ceauce.

Thanking you in advance for any help.

Well I have paid for her so she is at least safe from the Abbatoir!  However have still not found a trailer so am still looking so if there is a very kind person out there that would be good enough to loan me one I would be extremely grateful as am sure so would Lancia (8yr old Percheron). I just want to get he home and away from that awful place!

Sorry, my own trailer is unusable as it's unregistred.  However, I stuck "location van chevaux" into Google and there are quite a few but I'm not sure how far you'd go to pick one up.  This one is near Rennes

30 euros a day - any help?  I'll keep going through the Google list and see if I can find one closer for you, if rental appeals?

Cooperlola,

You are a Star! Thank you. Although have just spoken to someone who has offered the use of their trailer(they are about 1/2hr away from me) am going to look at it in the morning to see if it will be suitable. Keep your fingers crossed for me and of course Lancia!

Well done Morse!   I suspect that I will be the same as you when we move, colecting all the waifs & strays from miles around.   I think the neighbour is already lining me up to take the miniature pony his in-laws insisted on buying for the kids.  [:D]

Thanks guys for the support. I just can't believe how these poor horses are being treated, dragged from all over the place mostly Spain/France and then fattened up and shifted all the way to Italy because he gets paid more from the abbatoirs there than he does from French ones! Also they accept Mares in Foal(good business for him as these weigh more and he gets paid for the weight of each!)

Whilst I realise that we will not stop the eating of Horse meat I do think something should be done of how & where they are moved to! These poor creatures are usually moved shoved in boxes without any partitions!!

Well I will have a donkey when I come next year - maybe two - this has been implicit since the beginning of our quest to find our lovely home in France.   Hubby gets the Boys Toys and I get the donkeys I have craved since I was a child!

There will be no coming back - I am going to be planted in France when my time comes and at least one of my kids will be there to take over from me.

Out of interest, is there a Donkey Sanctuary such as we have here down at Sidmouth, or a Rescue place that rehomes such creatures?  Our dogs are both rescue cases and I also have a rescued Bearded Dragon so for us the act of giving a needy creature a home and love is not an alien concept.

Merci bien Cooperlola!    I will put that in my special file and keep it for when the time comes next year and I can action my plans.

The point is that I would not dream of abandoning my pets IF I were considering returning to the UK - and that is the last thing I will ever do anyway.   I took them on and my loyalty lies with providing them the love and care they need from me, so as far as I am concerned wherever I go my menagerie goes too.   I am hoping to bring my lizards with me if I can set up the specialist feed requirements in wintertime (ie. locusts & bugs), although I may just let them find Monsieur Loir in the grenier if the little devil keeps nicking my roof insulation!  [6].   If I cannot feasibly do this then they will remain here with my son who loves them as much as I do.

Actually I have a friend down in Tarn who breeds Great Danes.   She started with taking in one single abandoned cat, then a pig she rescued from harrowing conditions, followed by various dogs tied to her gate in the mornings when she went to take her daughter to school, plus cockatiels and budgies galore.   She tries to find homes as and where she can but as you can imagine she has a varied collection of waifs & strays now, alongside her own horses, farmyard chickens and all the Danes too.   She is a very kind lady who will reap her benefits in heaven,  of that I am sure.[:)]

I have been following this from a distance on the forums.  We would love to rescue a Percheron (having lived in the Perche).  When we rescued one of ours from a dealer when he was eighteen months old (he is now thirty-five), there was a young Percheron with him of the same age and we couldn't take both, still living in Paris and going to the county only at weekends.  We have always regretted it.

There was a mare Percheron for a while at La Ferme des Animaux Sauvés de la Mort in the Vendée.  I don't know if she still has her.  But we can't take any more as we don't have enough land, otherwise I would have been there with you Morse.

I believe the two Percheron mares are now saved.  Bravo Morse, get going girl !

Will do Cooperlola!

Christine Animal, You would have been more than welcome! Never mind I can inform you though that Yes! both girls have been saved the other one 'Cybelle' is going to go to the UK. God, 35! you must be thrilled to think that you rescued him at a young age and because of you he has had a wonderful long and happy life, WOW!

The Percherons are just gorgeous, can't wait but am a bit nervous as have not been around horses for a number of years and she is a bit wary bless her!not surprising considering what she has been through so don't want to make it worse for her. Have been swotting up like mad and trying to get the old grey matter remembering what I learnt all those years ago!

Oh well, perhaps we will be learning together as she is only 8. Will post some pictures once she is here and I get the camera sorted.

Take care all and Thanks for the support. I did wonder if I would get slated you know the usual sort of thing - Have you thought how much it will cost to keep her!  have you enough land! what if you return to the UK!

Anyway I am just glad she is NOT going to the Abbatoir, so there!

They're known round here as "une tonne de gentillesse" so don't worry too much.  I'm not that far from you so just hollah if you need any help - have worked with/owned horses for more years than I care to remember.  Worst thing you can do is to worry about not being able to cope - seek advice, don't suffer in silence or she will too.

Thanks for that Cooperlola,

I am sure I will be ok, I was fine when I saw her yesterday. It's just when I'm on my own doubting my ability and I certainly remember being told not to show nervousness around them as they pick up on it very quickly and that can make them act totally different.

Just writing a list of all the things I need initially so I don't forget anything. Do you recommend straw or wood shavings for bedding in her stable? Although not sure if she is used to being brought in at night it looks like she has been out all the time. Thanks for your offer of help and you never know I may well take you up on it!

Go for straw first - it's cheaper and more readily available.  If her breathing suffers as a result, or she coughs a lot, then look at shavings as an alternative.  I wouldn't worry about bringing her in at night in the summer if she's not used to it - think more about stabling her if it gets very hot during the day and the flies bother her - especially if your stable is nice and cool.

Oh, and don't forget to start her worming treatment immediately, especially important given where she's come from!

Such an interesting thread and well done Morse. Just to say that we have a horsebox available if anyone in our area needs one. It isn't registered here but can be insured for short periods of time as we used it when we moved house. We were thinking of having a horse when we first came but because we have very little knowledge decided against it, and now haven't enough land. My last experience of riding was exercising the beach ponies in the sand dunes up in Northumberland.  Pat.

Oh, Pat, I spent many happy holidays in Northumberland and rode on the beach at Druridge regularly.  Still one of my most beloved places on the planet!

As I said to Morse, the worst thing is not to admit you don't know what you're doing.  I've known a few amateur horse owners who waited until the whole situation was way out of control before they admitted defeat - by then the animal in question took a lot more work to get back than it would have done if somebody who knew what they were doing had given them some advice and help early on.  When this happens, the poor horse can end up as badly off as it was in the first place.  But then I guess that's true about any living thing - human or animal.

I  love Percherons myself, Pearly.  The trouble is there are fields and fields of them round here (happily all fat and happy!) - could have them coming out of my ears if I weren't careful.  Especially as the foals go for a song.  The saddler in Le Mans keeps several and even rides them (mind you, he's about 7 feet tall, so his legs probably don't stick out either side at right angles as mine would.)
