Apologies to new arrivals, this is continuing a thread from the Pets section (to do with poisonous plants) that was going a tad off-topic and turning into a feline love-fest!

Catalpa, you could fit about 3 of my Pyewacket into your one! As mine (weighing about 6lb) manages to push me half out of bed every night I can't imagine how you manage with Maine Coons! On the subject of the name - apparently from the Witchfinder connection, do you also know the film Bell, Book and Candle, in which Pyewacket is the familiar of a modern Manhatten witch (Kim Novak) who sets her sights on Jimmy Stewart? That Pye is a very chunky Siamese.

Also (and where we first found the name) there's a wonderful book by Robert Westall, called "Devil on the Road" which brings in another of the feline 'imps' - Newes. Oh the tears at the end. It had the Hopkins pic at the back of the book. It's a sort of 'time slip' story, supposedly for young adults, but highly recommended for adult adults too.

Devons, too, are chirrupy chatty cats, and stay kitteny-playful all their lives. Love to ride on shoulders and will simply shin up you to get there. Not such a problem given their size but any Devon owner has a range of scratches and scars on their shoulders as a badge of honour!

We have the privilige of being owned by 3 cats.  Our day consists of getting up, feeding the cats, letting them in & out of doors all day (why should they use the cat-flap, when they have us!!), feeding them again, opening a few more doors & finally feeding them before going to bed.

The rest of the day is usually taken up by cleaning the fur they leave behind, cleaning food bowls & generally being at their beck & call.  We have bought two new outfits, which we think suit us best!!  [:D]

Ever had the feeling of being used?!!!

Edit - Forgot to mention the lifting & disposing of small, half eaten animals from below the sofa, in the lounge!!

Easy - we give them their own bedroom [:D]. They are allowed in with us but only when we're awake otherwise, since Wacket likes to sleep half-way down the bed, under the duvet, and Gussie is a wrap-around-your-head sort of cat. We have already realised a 5ft bed is not enough and we need a super-king!

More later! [:)]

I'm not a cat lover and although we have 2 cats they are supposed to

live in the chicken house. So I got annoyed when I found one sitting on

"my" chair and chucked himoff.  He sat there sulking and looking

at me. When I got up and walked past him he gave me a rough punch with

his paw! Creepy? Husband said " serves you right." Pat.

we have tryed the no cats in the bed idea, but gladly/sadley it didnt work, when we were told that you either let us in or we will take it in turns to scatch the bottom of the door and wail all night, so we meekly gave in and got a 6x6foot bed but its still not big enough. how come they get to stretch out while we get pushed up into the corners???

To all you lovers of cats - there is a cartoon character called

Rusticat which appears on the first page of Rustica magazine every

week. Very amusing/drole. I think they've published a book of Rusti

cartoons. Pat.

Be afraid... be very afraid... or extremely bored. [:P]

Ali, I believe it was, on the other thread indicated an interest in seeing more GusWacket photos. So here they are. I don't post them as images btw, because I'm aware not everyone has broadband ([:@]) and they take forever to load in the body of a post. I know this.[:@]

I think the first image amply indicates why a 5ft bed isn't big enough when you've got a Gussie stretching out. [:-))]

No, Faye, I haven't read Devil on the Road but I'll go find it. I love time-travel-ly books so it sounds perfect. If I remember correctly, and nowadays it seems I frequently don't[:$], the imps were named as well as several cat and dog familiars, they weren't specifically identified as cats themselves, just imps.

Probably my all time favourite cat story is Jennie by Paul Gallico. I read it when I was... 12, 13 maybe, and got completely wrapped up in it. And cried so much at the end, my mother - never that observant and unaware of my preoccupation with the book - was convinced by my outrageously red eyes and snotty nose that I was "sickening" for something. [;-)] I still have the book.

One of the pic links I posted demonstrate Gussy acting as a neckwarmer on TOH early in the (v. chilly) spring. As with your Pye, they like to travel upper-deck and we only have to bend down to pick something up off the floor... and we have a cat trailing languidly across the shoulders. We too have the scars.

And PatF, I've looked at Rustica but not bought it as it seems expensive for what it is... but if it has cat cartoons, I'll make a point of... reading it in the supermarket.[6]

Rusti is retiring! As of next week there is a new cat on the block. A kitten called Tica. Rusti and Tica what imagination. I only hope that the new team are as observant of cats as was the guy who did the Rusti strip for many years.

We also have a maine coone - by the name of Bilbo Baggins, and we love him to bits - we're very much his humans - who else could wander up to MOH during a foootball match, complain that he is starving NOW and have hubby get up and go and feed him and miss a goal....

Will have to get a photo to post here - but don't have a digital camera, so only occcasionally have pictures on line. We're all making the final move to France in January to our home in Deux Sevres - and are really looking forward to it.

Thanks for the tip on lilies - I've a few in pots here - but there are quite alot in our garden in France (but not for long)

Hi Ejc!!

Brilliant!!  Another cat lover moving to Poitou Charente!!  We should get together & swap daft stories about our moggies!!  We should be there in July!!

Catalpa, the photos are brilliant - that is one laid back cat, you've got there!!  I'm gonna have a dig through some more of our pictures & bore you all stupid, later today (Oh yippee!!  I hear you cry!! [;-)] ).  I've got about 7 photos of the cats on my mobile phone, at the moment & not one of the hubby!!  But he already knows where he stands in the order of importance, in our house!!  [:-))]

I love this site, the Ecole du Chat is all over France, here is the one of the Pays d'Arles.  Click on Refuge and there are plenty of photos.  If it is not hyper sophisticated and clinical, you can see that there is great love and care that goes into it and the cats look happy and healthy :

This is a couple of Meg - our mad, big, beautifuL cat who sadly died 5 years ago.  She loved hiding in bushes (as you will see!!) & trees to attack any passing family member!!
