bigears
hiApologies for resurrecting an old post. I heard a brief mention on Sky news (think it was sky, rather than news 24) this morning that said the UK was closer than ever to adopting the euro, the source was EU president Barossa. So should we now consider is sterling doomed? I would expect the rate not to be as good (for the uk) as was available to Blair (remember him). woolybanana
So, UK, with a doomed currency is considering joining the doomed euro? Duhhhhhhhhhhh. Would it then be easier for us all to get winter fuel allowances what we dont deserve
bigears
hiIn my humble uneducated opinion the euro will be here long after stirling has gone. Its the euro sterling rate the uk eventually takes that is of concern to me as someone with more sterling assets than euro assets.
mint
So is it now time to spread your risks a bit by having approx 50 per cent euro- and 50 per cent sterling-based assets? And, of course, not even consider emigrating to the US?[:P]

bigears
hiIt was mentioned agnain this morning, on sky news. Its a plot masterminded by Mandleson, newly back from the eu. If there is a run on the pound and exchange rates settle at just over parity and interest rates are similar, perhaps it will happen. The uk public might have other more pressing things on their minds.
WJT
I thought that they needed it to be around 1.45 not parity for it to work. Those were the days when we thought 1.45 was a bad exchange.[:(]
Kitty
There are two threads going on here about the euro. I've just said on the other thread that you should read this article, written by an MEP.http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/daniel_hannan/blog/2008/11/16/joining_the_euro_would_be_the_worst_possible_response_to_the_sterling_crisisBasically the pound's slide is the reason why we should not join the euro.
