woolybanana
They got the lying toe*** at last. After months of denial, even in the French parliament, the budget minister (until last week anyway) has been arrested after being caught with an account in Switzerland containing €600,000. And he has confessed and, of course, apologized. Who next of Mr Hollandes happy band of brothers?http://tempsreel.nouvelobs.com/politique/20130402.OBS6428/jerome-cahuzac-a-l-heure-des-aveux.html(translation: http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Ftempsreel.nouvelobs.com%2Fpolitique%2F20130402.OBS6428%2Fjerome-cahuzac-a-l-heure-des-aveux.html )
woolybanana
Some politicians are now asking who else knew Cahuzac's dirty secret, particularly whether Mr Hollande and Mr Ayrault knew and if so, when? Could this be a much bigger scandal than just one sorry ex-minister who received payments from pharmaceutical companies into a Swiss account? Watch this space. NormanH
It is rather old news in that he resigned a while ago, so the mise en examen was only a matter of time A wonderful irony in him being the Ministre du Budget [:)]Will it be a race to see who wriggles out of it first, Cahuzac or Sarkozy? It seems that there are no honest people in politics, but I suppose I should have known that.It seems to me that the UMP are nastier, but Hollande's lot more incompetent.Poor France.Still loyalist that you are the cockles of your heart will be warmed to read that the day after April Fool's day, when the UK government celebrated folly by swinging cuts that will hurt the weakest in Society, the Queen had a 16% rise in funding to show that 'we are all in it together'

Chancer
Demander pardon? One I havnt heard before, to ask for forgiveness, to beg forgiveness perhaps? If so surely he should have apologised first? It does seem that "sorry seems to be the hardest word" really does apply in France. woolybanana
Well, Chiras was caught, Sarkozy is under investigation as is Paul Werth, a former UMP minister, and as far as I can see half the PS from the south is also being held, plus a load of stuff happening to politicians in the Pas de Calais. And Ayrault was had up a few years ago ........ Does it never stop?

NormanH
I wonder how to translate that into an English idiom?"All the same" seems a bit flat"Cut from the same cloth" seems a bit old fashioned"All as bad as each other" perhaps

idun
For some reason I thought that the Band of Brothers were basically 'good', where I got this idea from in my little noddle, I have no idea, but there is was floating around. So does Hollande have a band of brothers, feels more like a band of brigands to me.And the Queen, yes, more money going in; will pay for repairs to some buildings and the palace staff who have not a a pay rise for 4 years will get more money...... it is well known that they are already on very poor pay. I don't think that the Queen will be out living it up on the extra to be honest.

NormanH
I'm sure you are both right, but this is France, where the Minister with Budget responsibility who was leading the 'lutte contre le fraud fiscal' (See the photo above) has a hidden account in Switzerland [:D]

5-element
"All as bad as each other" perhaps
That seems close, but not quite such potent imagery as in French. Does it mean that there is no need (or tradition) for such powerful expression in English? I doubt it. Perhaps Christine or Clair or someone else will come up with an even better translation. woolybanana
And another one comes out of the woodwork. Are there any clean politicians out there? Should they be allowed to be dirty or must we assume they are? If not, how do we keep them clean? Gaol for a few would be an incentive to be clean perhaps. On the other hand, if they used those Financial skills that they have been using for their own benefit for the benefit of the State, perhaps we would all be much better off.http://www.leparisien.fr/faits-divers/le-depute-jean-christophe-lagarde-rattrape-par-la-justice-06-04-2013-2702757.php
