We have just bought a portable french tv, and are unable to get any reception on either an indoor aerial or the outside aerial. We have even tried the indoor aerial outside in case it was the 2ft stone walls causing a problem.No-one has lived here for about 12 years so I don't know if the previous owners had a problem. We also tried an old french tv on the outdoor aerial and again got no reception -this is confusing as if the outdoor aerial needs replacing surely the indoor aerial would work?For info the TV is a very cheap Techwood 14 inch. We are in 12 near Najac and get no reception whatsoever without a booster on the aerial Even with that Channel 6 is very iffy most of the time. Anton Redman Posted August 22, 2005 Share Posted August 22, 2005 We have no local Terrestrial TV reception with set top aerials. Check local houses - do they have dishes or antenna ? If the all have dishes or TV Aerials are huge then I suggest you co to local brico or hypermarket and buy an Analogue Decoder and 80 cm dish. You should be able to get one complete with Dish and LNB for Euros 40. Bracket and special Co Ax cable say another 30. At present you can get Digital (Numerique) Free To Air on 5 degrees West but nobody is saying how long this will continue for. The alternative is a subscription with one of the two Pay Per View Sat Channels which goes against the grain if you only want to watch the channels which you pay a for via Tax D Habitation. Will Posted August 22, 2005 Share Posted August 22, 2005 France is no different from Britain in this respect. In both nations there are isolated rural communities with no terrestrial signal. France, being a far larger country, with a similar poulation to Britain's, probably has rather more of these problem areas, and by their very nature they are those to which many British people are attracted. In fact, even in Britain it isn't just isolated places - our English maison secondaire is situated in a popular (and populous) commuter town south of London, and there is no reception on Channel 5, neither is the signal good enough for Freeview digital. Our neighbours have normal aerials and don't seem to have dishes. Perhaps we should try our tv in their homes!Anyway we didn't really want to pay the extra and buy a dish when we already have a tv aerial which must have been used at some time. JohnM Posted August 23, 2005 Share Posted August 23, 2005 Other things to think about.With strong signals a bent coat hanger will work, with weak signals you need to be more careful.Does your aerial point at a dirty gert tree that wasn't there 12 years ago? (The moisture in the leaves can attenuate a weak signal)Is the aerial actually pointing in the right direction? (It may have shifted in the wind if it wasn't quite tight enough).Has the connection between the aerial wire and the actual antenna corroded or come apart.Is the aerial the right sort? (Only one of the rods is actually receiving a signal, the others just focus the signal, it needs to be the right length for week signals).I suggest that you check the TV with neighbours first and then get somebody to check the aerial.
