I use limewire at www.limewire.com  works well.

Azureus is good for bittorrent

and www.torrentscan.com is a great file search for all torrents

The best all round torrent client is Utorrent.

You should forward your port and set up a static ip address but it's not the end of the world if you don't - it can also be a bit complicated with the Livebox.

Cap your upload to about 80% of it's maximum or your download speeds will be affected.

Utorrent makes all of this really simple (Azureus, as mentioned, is good too).

Demonoid is by far the best download site - users leave quality comments etc and there are very few dodgy files.

There's a pretty good UK site for old comedy series etc, I think it's called digitaldistractions.

I see no one has mentioned bittorrent yet. 

Another good search site is http://www.diggtorrents.com/ - it searches several of the major ones at once.
