Making freebox TV work in Linux: has anybody done this?

Recommended Posts

I have Free as my FAI, and I have a double boot of XP and Linux Ubuntu.

Most of the things I use XP for I can find an equivalent for in Linux, and as I am considering running only Linux on my next machine, I am keen to make everything work.

The one that is defeating me at the moment is Freeplayer for the Freebox.

On XP I use adsltv, but that is no good for Linux.

I have VLC, but I can't find vlc-fbx  (the version used in adsltv to connect to the Freebox) in the Ubuntu repositories.

I have also tried this, but can't make it work

Have any of you technical wizards any ideas?

An interesting idea and I wish you well.

I regret I have no direct experience of this but there seems to be some info on 'tinterweb.

A bit of Googling turned this up

Hello Norman,

On general recommendations, I installed Homeplayer instead of Freeplayer on XP, and I'm pretty sure there's an option for Linux in the 'download' section.

http://homeplayer.free.fr/new/index.php?page=6

Homeplayer v. 1.5.8a (version zippée)   Cette version est destiné au autre OS que Windows: Linux/MAC OS10.

Also found numerous Google hits for 'Homeplayer Ubuntu'.

My nightmare getting Freeplayer or Homeplayer to work, magically disappeared when I disabled my Looknstop firewall !

Good luck !

HTH

Andrew

Please keep us informed, as I'm tempted to switch to Ubuntu Linux myself some time...

You may also be interested in a small program called Netdrive   http://www.netdrive.net/    with which you can 'see' your Freebox HD and/or external HD connected to it, just as you can your local disc(s) in Explorer. Copying files is much simplified, though a bit slow !

Set up instructions can be found here    http://wiki.freeplayer.org/index.php?title=Acc%C3%A9der_directement_au_disque_dur_Freebox_HD_sous_Windows

HTH again,

Andrew

You can get a fully functioning taste of Ubuntu by using this:

http://wubi-installer.org/

I am still wrestling with the TV, but think it might be a case of needing to do a re-install, as the reactively simple instructions at

http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/homeplayer

leave me with a problem I am having with another programme, that is to say it seems as if the two are already running when I try to access them and so are blocked , yet they aren't working..
