Did you know about this, I just came across it.  The wonderful Saint Bernard dog is being imported, bred, mistreated, suffering to be used as meat in China :

30 Millions d'Amis also has a petition :

Some are at Crufts, while others are being eaten...  quel monde.

I've signed the petition Christine, but China and some other countries are a long way from western values.

On a brighter note, we rescued (stole) a dog today and she is in our other dogs basket sleeping. She is so thin ( but not for long ). It's a long story, tell you about it one day.

Yes, that's what I saw Maureen, that it's been going on for several years.  I can't believe I hadn't heard about it before.  What I mean Chris, is that it's bad enough what they do to their own dogs in China, but for the Swiss to be exporting them for that...

Well done for saving the little dog today, that's good news.  Hope you'll all be happy together!  And thanks for signing the petition.

It's absolutely appalling

"There are no animal welfare organizations in China and the dogs are subjected to the most inhumane treatment imaginable. Videos show slaughter methods that are too horrific for general release to the media."

Disgraceful behaviour from a country that aspires to western values and clearly ignores them.   I worked in a company that traded and imported many Chinese goods - it seems that nothing matters in their relentless pursuit of good 'old USD $$s.    Horrible.

It is so disgusting! I just can't look at the videos. I saw one a while back that showed they prefer skinning live dogs and cats because it is easier than skinning a dead one. Apparently a warm supple live body is easier than a stiff dead one to skin. [:'(]

Im not condoning this bad treatment of dogs or any animal (I think its disgusting) but.........my brother lives in China and the if your a westerner or well off Chinese, then you are indeed fortunate. Most Chinese are poor - Very poor. They will eat anything. My brothers driver (you can own a car but need to have a Chinese driver) is well paid by Chinese standards, ( a few dollers a month) but he is shocked when my father tells him he throws his carp back in the lake! He and his family eat rats regularly. Its a good source of protein. Anything goes in China - cats, dogs rats cows & pigs - its all the same to them - survival.

Thousands of Chinese were evicted from their homes when they were bulldozed to make way for the Olympic games - what compensation did they get? nothing. Not a bean - those who protested got 10 years in clink.

We forget how fortunate we are in the west - so called booming countries like China still have an awful long way to go. Animal husbandry or even welfare are years/decades behind. How do we get them up to date? I have no idea - if you boycot Chinese made goods what is there left to buy?

I agree with many of your comments Steve BUT I also believe no matter what there is no excuse for extreme unnecessary cruelty.

This cruelly takes place amongst the whole of the population not just the poor. I have friends that visit regularly and they go where most tourists would never go and they have said some of what they have seen is just shocking and they won't even tell me. Dog meat is offered openly in fast food areas all over the place. Again as horrible as this is to me it isn't so much the fact that they eat dog is is the absolute barbaric cruelty in which these poor dogs and cats are kept and then very cruelly and painfully killed that is sub human in my opinion.

Sadly, the Chinese are not completely alone in their barbaric behaviour. The Koreans will keep dogs in the same cruel way packed on top of each other in small cages many times putting open rusty tin cans over their mouths to keep the shut  and they cannot move an inch before killing them they will torture and frighten them. This is meant to fill the meat with adrenalin that the stupid men think will make them more virile. Sorry if this sounds racist but it is backward, ignorant, evil and disgusting and it is not done just by the poor.

I would imagine that the only way to stop the barbarity is for it to be discussed just as in this thread. I never knew about any of this until I ran across some photos and an article that is burned in my brain that I saw in a Big Issue I bought several years ago. Now it is talked about more openly. The more the West finds out about this sort of thing hopefully the more influence it can have and perhaps help sensitise and educate.

Having said that I am shocked to hear about the Swiss shipping Saint Bernards to China for slaughter. I suspect it isn't for the poor either![:@]

By the way, I for one would NEVER buy a leather product made in China![:'(] In fact, I go along with Bilclairie's comments.
